I have a chance to buy a Smith & Wesson Chiefs Special Model 36, 2" barrel, new in the box, never fired. Very nice condition but the trigger pull seemed very hard. Is this normal for this firearm? What is a fair price?

Thanks,

The pull loosens with use. If it is old and sat around the old oil could be gummy. Just drop some new Hoppes oil in it and dry fire.

How old is it? If its a good price go for it. Good luck finding any replacement grips for it though if it's a round butt. Good thing Smith put some nice ones on there anyway.

Smith's lock work is delightfully easy to manipulate. I am not recommending anyone of these methods to slick up the action except cleaning up interior frame bearing surfaces. It's safe and it is veritably impossible to mess up your firearm. ThAT SAID, HERE IS WHAT i'VE KNOWN MODEL 36 OWNERS TO DO:(Sorry about the caps.) Remove a coil off the rebound spring, slick up the under side of the rebound spring housing, shave the main spring or loosen the mainspring retentionscreww a turn, remove the safety transfer bar and finally, if your hands don't shake and your eyes are perfect you can polish the sear engagement.

I've owned my 36 since 1971. I purchased it used but was in excellent shape. At seven yards it shot about an inch and one half at 8 o:clock. I know,I know it's a belly gun what do you expect. I was into bullseye at the time and wanted whatever I owned to be balls on. I sent it back to Smith. The firearm was returned,no charge, and absolutely flawless in every way - no, it's not for sale. I don't know what S&W's policy is now, but if you are really dissatisfied with the action as it is now, I would give them a call for their recommendation. Hope it works as well as mine.
