On Breitbart (http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-TV/2012/09/15/Colorado-School-Takes-Rosary-Beads-Away-From-Student) today:

FOX NEWS: The rosary represents a Catholic symbol for a series of prayers, but at one Colorado school, the beads are a problem. 16-year-old student Manuel Vigil says he wears the beads because they make him feel safe. The school feels differently, saying that the rosary beads can be mistaken for a gang symbol.

Thompson school district spokesperson, Margaret Crespo, said, “We’ve given you two opportunities to take it off or to put it inside your shirt, and that’s not something that you’re interested in doing, then you don’t leave us an alternative but to remove it.”

The school has taken the beads away from Vigil twice since school started, and he says he’s not allowed to have it back unless a parent comes to pick it up.

This just amazes me. Didn't we see a story not long ago where a school district (in a different State) allowed Muslim students to wear a ceremonial dagger because it is part of their religion? So from the Liberal mindset: Muslim dagger = OK, Catholic beads = dangerous. [Bang]

I don't think that is the point at all. Should crosses be banned from schools because the KKK likes to set them on fire?

Anyone, from any faith, is permitted to practice their religion in this country. We had a Muslim, an Iraqi, in our platoon. No matter what activity we were engaged in, he stopped whatever we were doing to pray several times throughout the day, as his religion required.

Catholics have no reason to wear the beads around their necks... A Rosary is not a necklace, it is a prayer aid. That being said, unless it is obstructing learning, there is no reason not to let him "wear" his rosary how he wants...

Perverting the rosary to be a Mexican gang sign is (unfortunately) more common than most people think.

So if you want something banned in public, simply have an organization of criminals or undesirables adopt it as their own. The potential is endless.

This happened to my friend's nephew, except not quite as far as infringing upon religious freedom... His nephew (15) wore a Dallas Cowboy's Romo jersey to school (his favorite quarterback) and was made to have his mother come and bring him a different shirt because, and I quote the school's response to her question of why: "Jerseys have become common attire for gang members, thus it is against school dress code policy for students to wear them." WTF? So you can't wear a sports jersey because gang members wear them? Gangs wear red and blue, so does that mean that you aren't allowed to wear red or blue? [Bang]

On that same line, myself and a group of friends tried to get into Brother's downtown and my friend wasn't allowed in because he was wearing a Nuggets jersey- they stated it was because of gangs... ??????? My faith in humanity is certainly dwindling by the day.

Beads make the kid "feel safe"?? Appears the same amount of safety would be felt and enjoyed if they were worn either INSIDE OR OUTSIDE of his shirt.
The "feeling" of safety is all in your mind anyhow.

Yup I went to High School in New Mexico .. every gang banger wore something Raiders related. t-shirt, hat, jacket... always the Raiders. And damn near all the time.

Gangs wear red and blue, so does that mean that you aren't allowed to wear red or blue? [Bang]

Almost got that bad when I was in middle school .... and that was over 25 years ago

Bars/nightclubs use dress codes to keep out the riff raff a gang member/ trouble maker will spend 120 bucks on jersey but wont go spend 30 bucks on a decent polo.. it's sad but makes an easy weapon for a door guy to keep trouble makers out. but you have to apply it even handed. hard to tell the guy that is obviously a gang member or trouble maker you can't let him in wearing his sports attire when the frat guy walks out wearing the same thing at that moment....

Exactly... however, and I don't advocate bringing one to school, but I feel safe regardless of if my Glock is on the inside or outside of my shirt... [Tooth]

Sheesh, whats gonna happen when plain white t shirts are adopted by some gang? Whats left to wear that doesn't offend someone any more? Even schools in Greeley banned the Manning jerseys because of the number 18, which evidently means something in gang bang slang. That being said, the kid was told previously not to wear the beads or to hide them in his shirt so this wasn't a big shock to him I wouldn't think.

Maybe we need to go to dress codes. nicely dressed kids, with American Flag pins worn every day, all made in the USA. If my tax dollars are paying for it, they should not get to wear gang related clothes, religious related items, etc etc.

I think it would help with dress code issues, gang issues, poor vs. rich kids issues, bullying issues, maybe more.

Don't like it, go to public school.

In the end, the whole system needs an overhaul, but we all know that isn't realistic in this day in age. stripping the whole system and starting over is what I would like to see, but that won't happen.

To identify each other, they "wear" rosary beads like a necklace outside their shirts.

I only feel stronger when I wear my undies outside my pants!

It will be greatly appreciated if you only wear them (yer undies) INSIDE your pants especially when they display numerous skid marks. [Tooth]

Exactly this. Anyone who wears a jersey to a bar, without having come directly from a game, deserves to stand outside anyway.

But the number of skid marks shows your rank in the gang [ROFL1]

If I can't pronounce it, it's probably nefarious. [ROFL1]

That's my own ignorance, sorry.

I don't subscribe to any religion. I think the very concept of faith precludes reason. I do, however, get a little heated when I see (what I perceive as) someone else's religious practices being denied. Guess I'm in the minority.
