View Full Version : Need some help with an Army guy in the Springs

This gentlemen wanted to trade me my AR15 for an ACOG, TA31RCO-M150CP (http://www.trijicon.com/na_en/products/product3.php?pid=TA31RCO-M150CP) and
I verified the serial number with Trijicon and it was initially sold to the Army.
This is a huge red flag and wondering if any of the members on her that are stationed at
Ft. Carson can help me getting the word to this guys command he is stealing government property.
Last night the guy was willing to drive to Arvada from the Springs to make the trade.
Makes 100% sense now how nefarious this transaction could have been.
ETA: So far I have determined this individual is still in the Army and station at FT. Polk , LA.
IDK if he is on leave or what but waiting on FT. Polk MPI to call me back.
ETA:25SEP12: I have confirmation from the Army that the Trijicon is stolen and was taken from an Army depot center in Illinois.
That is its last location from the Army record. The guys Command has been notified and hope he gets nailed to the wall.
I cannot stand theives.

a trade through here or where? just so we know. and maybe let us know who, so we dont get involved in criminal activities by accident.
It was an armslist guy. I dont think he is a member here.
As soon as I get the ball rolling with CID, I will let the name be known. Just verify items before hand and tread lightly with armslist folks.

Nice job on doing your due dilligence.
Good on ya Gabe... way to go! This is the crap that pisses me off about some of our lesser honest SMs. Last time I checked rifle optics (especially ACOGs) are on the sensitive items list, there should be better control unless this was a FLIPL, in which case this is even worse.

I agree this is pure BS. The ACOG is brand spankin new from the pics.
The situation just got more complicated since this guy is still stationed at Ft. Polk, LA. I have a call into FT. Polk and hoping this is delt with quickly.

But what if he bought it off armslist not knowing and now you just hung him out and ruined his career and now his kids will have to live in foster homes while he is in the can? Maybe he had 4 purple hearts, stars and 18 years of putting up with the Army and its all over thanks to Gabe [ROFL1]
Just playing the advocate here because i have bought issued shit not knowing before. [Beer]

CID can follow the papertrail and convict or clear him; that's their job. If it has a serial number, there is a record of everywhere it has been and who touched it.
(hmmmm.....I should have got my x wife a serial number!)

That's partially true. It all depends on the unit- they are supposed to keep issue records for up to 5 years, but some units don't, and some armorers are sloppy. By regulation, yes, you are supposed to keep records of all hand receipts and issues, but then again, with optics, at least in my old unit, they would put the optic on the hand receipt with the issued weapon- if you don't return the optic with the rifle, then you have a serious problem. Unless this guy is an armorer, the a whole new can of worms opens up.

Your assuming the dip shits can and will do their jobs [ROFL1] like most large corporations the military cant seem to keep track of anything. Hopefully if hes innocent they let it be instead of trying to make numbers for promotion. Anything that has anything to do with intelligence usually does not.

Thats what they are there for. If its legit, he has nothing to worry about.

Hey now! I resent that... oh wait, nevermind. [Coffee]
I am personal friends with the IG @ Ft Polk as well as a CID agent.
I am stationed @ Lewis now, but I know them from my previous duty station, cell phone numbers in my phone :)
If you can get me the guys Name, rank, and unit down to the lowest echelon I can make sure its handled.... or just gimme what you've got.

And that is why you have to be careful doing shady stuff. Never know who's watching [Tooth]

how can you check the serial numbers?
The serial is on top of the ACOG on both pieces, the body and the outer eye peice section.
I called Trijicon and gave them just the serial, they looked it up and came back the item I was
concerned with and who it was sold to, the Army and not an FFL.
Its a 6 digit number and my guess is that both sides should be the same number, unless its been repaired
and turned 2 half broken ones into one good one. Doubt that is very common.

Yeah, no shit. They wouldn't take some of my (their) stuff back because it was dirty or broken. Well, it's been in Asscrackistan for 2 years. WTF do you think happens to stuff over there? CIF is probably equivalent to the seventh circle of hell.

Really? Everything? I've sold plenty of military gear that wasn't stolen.

I had picked up an almost complete set of TA-50 gear by the time I drew mine issue in Fort Lewis. Knowing that this crap was going to be in the mud at Lewis or dust at Yakima for the next four year, I took the issued gear and just tossed it in the closet. Got through CIF outbound with no problems.
Lewis CIF is a breeze. I just turned all my stuff in.

Ok not everything, but any body armor,Aimpoints or Acogs in the Springs are most likely.

Congratulations on nailing a scumbag. The Army will be better off without him. [Kick1]
Kudos to you for even asking the question. Lots of folks wouldn't. [Sail1]

Awesome work. I've had not one but TWO motorcycles stolen from me (and the third I sold was stolen from the buyer 2 days later and found in Mexico the next day) so I definitely wish nothing but pain and suffering on thieves.
Must be a real special genius to be in the army (an honor and privilege to even have the opportunity to serve your country, only now at my age can I even begin to appreciate this fact) and then steal such a high ticket piece of equipment to trade for a luxury item and not pay down your credit card debt etc etc. if he did indeed steal it, welcome to a dishonorable discharge and the end of your professional life for good??

This issue raises other questions about the piece of equipment:
If it was originally sold to the Army, then who's property book was this thing on since it was manufactured?
Being something that the Army (through the burden placed on the Commander) should keep a pretty close eye on, when was it last ACTUALLY accounted for? When was the last time someone SAY they saw it (using the regular inspection and inventory protocols and the documentation required to be on hand for up to 6 years, by people outside of the owning unit).....

I have no clue but just guessing (and maybe I'm giving way too much credit to the army heh) perhaps they scan a barcode on each device that "checks" the piece of equipment into an electronic inventory? I know my Eotech has a lil Q-code on the bottom that probably contains the serial#.
the last time it was accounted for was in an Illinois depot. It was skimmed off before it hit the books at its gaining unit.
I gave the guys info to my contact @ Polk and they found him on the Alpha roster... his command was notified.

Based upon the date of manufacture, the item may or may not have that feature already.
Even then, there is the requirement to physically inventory the item at very specific intervals by multiple Soldiers with various responsibilities to the item.

Is it still on the books anywhere in the Army? Send me the serial number and I can check.

I haven't spoke to CID personally, but according to LTC Teague, Ft. Polk IG Command, the soldier trying to sell it is on the Polk Alpha roster, and the info he got on the serial was that its last known location was some place in Illinois, a depot he thought.
There is nothing after that. So the ASSumption is that it was shipped to Polk, and skimmed off the top of the inventory before it was put onto a property book or 2062
