What did you get?
I'm building my first SBR. Just a standard 5.56 AR with a 7.5 inch barrel. I'll post a pic of what I have so far in a few minutes.
When money allows, I have plans for a suppressor or two down the road. [Coffee]
Yes, I understand that most suppressors aren't warrantied on a barrel shorter than 10 inches... A 10.5 inch upper is also on the horizon [Evil]
EDIT: Here's a pic of the future goodness:
http://imageshack.us/a/img708/6303/imag0295b.jpg
The BCG, LPK, and Pistol buffer tube should all be here within the next few days. The JP Handguard is not exactly what I expected it to be (yes I understand it is mounted upside down in the picture). It has a very rough texture and I was expecting something smooth(er) and longer.. I thought the 7" measurement for the handguard began and the back edge of the handguard, not at beginning of the barrel nut... My mistake. I might trade it for something longer just because it would look a lot better. Decisions, decisions!

BS. I have 2 uppers that are less than 10" , 7 if you count the pistols.
RCCrawler. Out of curiosity why the 22 SBR vs. doing an ar lower then using a dedicated 22 upper on it? This would give you multi lower versatility.

I'll echo Jim's sentiments on silencers on 7.5's. I've run thousands of rounds with an Ops M4s and an Ops 15 attached to a 7.5", and have had no issues of any sort. When I called the guy who made my cans, his only suggestion was that I use the brake mount instead of the flash-hider mount, as it takes the brunt of the abuse and is the stronger of the two.

Update:
I shot my 7.5" upper for the first time today! Whew this thing is fun! I'm quite pleased that my first self-constructed upper didn't blow up in my hands the first time I pulled the trigger. I shot a 4MOA group from a sandbag, which I am also quite pleased with. (shooting a AR pistol from a sandbag is kind of ridiculous...) Can't wait to get my stamp and turn it into a rifle. I've never shot an AR Pistol before, but it kind of sucks IMHO.
Other things to note: Holy COW does the muzzle break make a huge difference on a 7.5" AR! The Noveske KX3 seemed to do a nice job eliminating flash, but doesn't do anything for the recoil. I have a different muzzle break (i'll post a picture in a little bit) that really helps the muzzle rise, but it was kicking dust off the ground while I was standing, and I was getting hit with a lot of blast. If you were standing next to me while I shot with this muzzle break on, it wouldn't be fun. I took some 340fps video of the kx3, the muzzle break, and no muzzle device to compare. If its interesting I might try to edit and post the videos. It would have been a lot cooler at night, but I digress.
I'm probably going to call in about a month to see if the stamp has gone to "pending." I'm going to check everything over for any signs of stress or wear, give it a light cleaning, then put it in the safe until my stamp comes. All this thinking about it is making me craaaaazy!

I'd be interested in how you feel it performs with a standard flash hider. The two things that the Noveske flash hider do in addition to hiding flash are give you a little more back pressure and a little longer dwell. Not a lot of barrel after the gas block on a 7.5", so every little bit helps. I do have to say that I think your SBR looks pretty cool with the short handguard and the KX3. My biggest complaint about the VTAC handguard us that I have had to re-torque the collar screws several times.

Thanks Johnny! I'm loving the look of the KX3 inside the handguard. The KX3 kind of looks like a suppressor from the side, and I much prefer that look over the little skinny muzzle break sticking an inch out the end...
After 120 rounds, everything seemed nice and tight still. I am very leery of overtightening things, so I tend to undertighten everything for fear of breaking it (this had led to several scopes jiggling loose while shooting [Bang]), but those collar screws on mine came with locktite on them and were still quite snug.
Side note: After rapid firing about 30rds with the KX3, the KX3 was HOT and the handguard was getting uncomfortably warm.
I've heard from a lot of people that a 7.5" SBR can be really tricky to perfect, but mine seems to function perfectly with no tweaking. It has a standard recoil spring and buffer and works fine. Brass is ejecting a little bit forward, mostly between 2-3 o'clock, and it is a little erratic, but that doesn't bother me. Would an H-2 buffer fix the forward eject?

I agree with Jim. These things are fiddley enough that I wouldn't go 'fixing it' until you know that it is broken.
That forearm will get very hot under moderately sustained rates of fire. That is one of the reasons I wear gloves when shooting:

My thoughts exactly. The barrel had about 500 rds on it when I picked it up from the dreaded armslist but it looks perfectly fine to me. I have a history of "fixing" things that weren't broken. I think I've moved past that, but I've heard some internet ninjas say that ejecting forward of 3 o'clock is bad. I asked because I knew Jim would stop me from doing something stupid.

Nice action shot! Some good shooting gloves might be a wise investment. I think ultimately this 7.5" SBR will be a great home defense rifle with such a short OAL. It certainly won't be my only SBR!

Do you guys really call them to ask what the status is?
I kinda figured leaving them alone would get things done quicker. I mean with 1000's of these things pending even if just 1% of the people called each day to get a status check that's 10 phone calls per day, each taking what 5 minutes? All the callers just knocked an hour out the screeners day, and being government workers they probably only work 4 hours a day to begin with.
being government workers they probably only work 4 hours a day to begin with.
Sir, you are an optimist!
A heavier buffer will slow down the bolt action. Ejecting past the 3'oclock position just means that the bolt is moving faster than it has to. Harder on the gun. Shouldn't have a problem with running it dirty tho.

You never talk to the people that are processing the the form if all you ask about is the status. The person answering the phone just checks the status on a computer. You are not disturbing the examiner. If you have any other questions they will give you the number to contact the person doing your form.
I didn't check the status on a Form 1 I sent in for six months. When I did call I found out it had been mailed three months earlier. I had to request an official copy. The copies don't have a stamp which is kinda a bummer. So I normally check the status after about what is the normal processing time just to make sure it wasn't lost somewhere.

According to some of their stats, I could have it any day now!
Tried copying a table from the NFA tracker site, but it wouldn't format correctly. It said the average time from check cashing to receiving the stamp was 160 days for F1 Trusts.
The NFA wait time predictor here (http://www.nfatracker.com/WaitTimePredict.aspx) says I have an 82% chance of getting it this month! [WooHoo]

Your FFL will call you when the paperwork is on hand, unless you did a F1 then it should be sent to where you gave as a new addy.

I haven't given them notice of a new address yet, and I wasn't planning on doing it until after I move, just so things don't get lost in the mail. I didn't actually have the address of our house until just a few weeks ago.

Is "it" a form 1 or form 4?
Saturday I received my Form 1 on my Thompson Center Contender:
09/01/2012 -- Mailed
09/17/2012 -- Pending
03/02/2012 -- Stamp received
Sarah B Jones, examiner.
Call it six months EXACTLY from the date it was mailed.
With a 22 Sparrow on it and CCI Quiets, all you can hear is the hammer fall. I was stunned. Tells me that a lot of the noise of the Mk II with the 22 Sparrow is from the breech when the bolt moves back.

Form 1.
Well you can call the ATF and see if they can/want to/are able to amend your form (I have no idea), or worst case it'll be forwarded like the rest of your mail. Then you'll have to turn around and immediately file a 5320.20 (http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-5320-20.pdf) -- and have to carry around two pieces of paper all the time. :(

I think I would just wait until you get your approved Form 1 then send in the change. That is if you are confident that the mail will be forwarded to you.
I don't think the examiners can change anything on the forms. They would have to send them to you so you could change them.

The .20 form is just an easy way to inform them of the address change, it's what I've used in the past. Submitted in duplicate, you get one back to prove that you've informed them.

Alright I finally broke down and made the call. Good news is it was approved 2/27/13, bad news is I'm still waiting...

Annnnnnnnnnnd Surprise! Envelope in the mail from the US department of Justice!
I got my SBR form 1 returned to me. [Cry]
Attached was a sheet of paper saying:
"The enclosed application is being returned to you for the following reason:
Proof of trust--Declaration of Trust--required, including any attachments mentioned in the trust."
What the heck does that mean?? What do I need to send them? Also, it appears that they sent my original 2 copies of my form 1 back to me with a control number at the top... I'm guessing I need to send those back with *something* documenting my trust?

That's a bummer. I can't keep track of everyone's screen names. Are you one of my clients?
Did you send in a copy of the Trust itself. If it's one I did, this would have 6 pages.
Did you send in a copy of the original Schedule A. If it's one of mine, it would have an XX Dollar Bill listed with a serial number.
There are no other attachments mentioned in my form of Trust. If you sent a full copy of the Trust, a Declaration of Trust is not necessary. A Declaration of Trust is just a summary of the Trust--sort of like a Cliff's Notes version of a book. If you've got the whole book and the whole book is only 6 pages, then why would anyone need a separate summary? You'd sometimes give a Declaration of Trust to a Bank when you're opening up a new account because you can hold back some personal information from them. I would think that the ATF would want/prefer full disclosure.
Even if you're not a client of mine, please feel free to contact me and I'll be happy to help. If nothing else, this will impact my clients and I want to provide a perfect Trust package so that it's accepted the first time around with the ATF.

to Mr. NFATRUSTGUY and HoneyBadger,
Holy Cow, I hate to question a lawyer about legal stuff but here goes.
On my trust the full document of 6 pages is titled "Declaration of Trust". The short, cliff notes version is referred to as a "Certification of Trust". The ATF accepted a "Certification of Trust" for my first NFA item (a Form 4). The next Form I submitted they returned and said they required the full 6 page "Declaration of Trust". I think that the ATF calls the full Trust document a "Declaration of Trust", whether that is the correct term or not.
Congratulations HoneyBadger! Your Form 1 is approved except for the Trust. All they need is a copy of the Trust and Attachment and your Form is done.
You need to send a copy of the long version, full text of the Trust and the Attachment. You may not have received a short version of the Trust.
The "Attachment" that they want is the inventory list. My list is referred to as "Schedule A". My understanding is that there needs to be something in the trust to make it officially alive.
Just stuff everything the ATF sent you and a copy of the Trust and inventory Attachment into an envelope and send it back to them.
The good news is you go to the front of the line. Whenever I had to do this it only took mail travel time and 2 or 3 days. I have heard it is taking a little longer currently. It will not take another six months.
Hang in there. It won't be long now.

@ SAnd:
Never hesitate to question a lawyer. As much as some of us to pretend to be otherwise, we're certainly not infallible.
I think you are absolutely correct.
I responded to HoneyBadger's post as if the ATF were asking for a Certification of Trust--which is the shortened version. I then went on in my post and continued to use the wrong term to describe the shortened version.
I should have read his question more carefully so as not to induce further confusion.
I've been telling my clients that they do not need a Certification of Trust. Just send in the actual Trust itself which is formally called (as you correctly state) a Declaration of Trust.
I'm sorry for the confusion and thank you for pointing out my mistake. My offer stands to help Honey Badger if he needs it-- even if he's not my client.

Rod, you did indeed put together my trust for me. I have no complaints about your work, but maybe I should have done more research before sending in my form 1! It would have been helpful if I had known that I needed to send in a copy of the trust... I wouldn't be surprised if you had instructed me to do this in our correspondence and I somehow missed it.
Anyway, Thanks for the help. I'll get it in the mail right now and hopefully I'll have a much happier post to wrap up this thread in a week or two!

Please clarify if you're talking about the "Initial Trust Funding Schedule A" (the one with the first Trust item) or the "inventory" - aka ""Revised Schedule A, trust assets?"
Why would anyone send them the entire Revised Schedule A?

Please clarify if you're talking about the "Initial Trust Funding Schedule A" (the one with the first Trust item) or the "inventory" - aka ""Revised Schedule A, trust assets?"
Why would anyone send them the entire Revised Schedule A?
The Schedule A is the listing of everything the Trust owns. It's part of the Trust so it should be included as part of the Trust when you submit an application to the ATF. The only difference between the original Schedule A and the revised Schedule A is, well... it's been REVISED to include newly-purchased items. Assuming we're starting with a new Trust, the only thing it owns at the outset is the XX Dollar bill, so that's the only thing that's listed on the Schedule A. When you transfer something into the Trust, then you add it to the Schedule A. This addition is a REVISION so the Schedule A is now called a Revised Schedule A.
You can't transfer an NFA-regulated item into the Trust until AFTER the Form 1 or Form 4 is approved, so the item you're applying for shouldn't appear on the Schedule A you submit to the ATF.
To make the example complete, let's say your Trust applied for and received a stamp for a suppressor in March of 2012. In 2013, your Trust decides to apply for a second suppressor. The Schedule A that you send in for your 2013 application should list the XX Dollar Bill plus the 2012 suppressor--2 items.
I hope this helps to clear things up. I've exchanged emails with HoneyBadger and I think he should be good to go.
Rod

Your signature on the front and the Law Enforcement guy's signature has to be on the same piece of paper. If they were on two separate pieces of paper you could use a Law sign off from someone else.
That's the way it was explained to me anyway.

Form 1 REQUIRES NO LE SIGN OFF on a trust. Some county CLEO are not NFA friendly. the reason a Trust is used. OR does
it still need a CLEO? mmmmmmmmmmmmm

If you send in a Form 1 or a Form 4 on behalf of a Trust, you do not need the CLEO sign-off.
I don't know the real reason the ATF wants double-sided, but I'm willing to chalk it up to one of those Golden Rules and just comply. Easy enough.

I just thought it was lame for him to take the time to write a denial letter, stick them in the envelope, buy a stamp, and mail it. Seems like it would have been less work and cheaper to just copy the back onto my original front.
