View Full Version : Tweaker Hours
Man started a job last night in the Cherry Creek Mall. We're allowed to work from 10:30 at night till 6:00 in the morning. Got home made the kid lunch and taking him to school. I can't wait to get back home and go to bed. I hope this is the first and last time I ever work nights. I have about 2,000 more brick to lay. Maybe two more nights.....ehh don't like these tweaker hours. I take my hat off to you guys who work shift work. I prefer to rise and fall with the sun.

I was security guard, did overnight for like a year.
(Then there was that month+ where my schedule was: 7a-3p, 11p-7a, 3p-11p, reset. I think I had 2-3 days off in that period. It was crazy but I made a ton of cash.)
It can be rough. Roughest are when you get into a nocturnal cycle and you go get your groceries at 1am.
Midnight till 8am. Love it...... (sarcasm)

Worked security guard shift from 7 p.m.-3 a.m. for awhile. Talk about screwing up the body clock [Coffee]
The funny part.. I spent 10 years working 1a-10a.. then went to a regular 8-5ish.. I don't think I woke up ONCE in the first 4 weeks w/o having about 3 different alarm clocks set... work was understanding to a point..
So you guys who did security.. are you going to regale us with stories of the stuff that security can do.. [ROFL1]
I did graves in the winter of 99-2000, working at Kmart from 2200 to 0600, then going to my day job here from 0700-1800. Go home, sleep a few hours, rinse and repeat. You do what you have to to make ends meet, but it was easier then...
Worked night shift in the TOC in A'Stan, 1900-0700- a lot of times it would run over well into 0900 if we had outgoing patrols that I had to brief. Then when I did BDOC ECP ASOG (whew that's a lot of acronyms) I worked from 1430-0030, now that will really mess up your clock!
Glossary:
ASOG- Assistant Sergeant Of the Guard
BDOC- Base Defense Operation Center
ECP- Entry Control Point
TOC- Tactical Operations Center

I miss working nights. I like it beacuse you can get things done during the
day you normally couldnt if you worked normal hours.
I also loved that the boss wouldnt bother you and leave you to your own motivation
to get work accomplished. I even slept better, I would go to bed around 0900-1000
and get up on my own around 1700 and go to work at 1830 until 0500
The "Witching" hour from 0300 to 0430 was the absolute worst. It drug out and that
was when Id get sleepy if it was a slow night. I was on night from 2001 to 2004.

Yeah lets hear some neat security guard stories [M2]

When I worked security at an acute care hospital in Denver (just east of Downtown) we had a crackhead bang on the door once after visiting hours were over (the doors were locked)- all he wanted was a soda, I told him to go away. After he refused I told him to go away or I would call the cops. He went away. Wooo! That was so exciting! [LOL]

I do shift work now, started 4 months ago... My schedule looks like this: 0600-1500 for 2 days, then 1400-2300 for 2 days, then 2200-0700 for 2 days, then I get 4 days off. I usually spend the whole first day of my "weekend" in bed because I don't get home until 0800 or later, and it takes another day or so to get my body to adjust to a normal sleeping and eating schedule.
It has its benefits, but I think Mrs. HoneyBadger and I are ready for an office job for a while.

The only thing that always come to mind is being told to wear a black t-shirt so there wouldn't be an aiming point on your body.
WTF about the shiny badge and the shiny name plate ? [ROFL1]

I worked the Zombie Squad for 18 years for snow removal. Sucks when you get a storm that has you on shift for a couple days, then it clears out and you go back to days for a couple of days then back on so shift for 3 or 4 days.
Six weeks of that crap and you don't know if it is day or night, if your coming or going.
I worked nights solid for 2 winters so I would be on an even keel. Ha, what a joke-you lose at least 10 hours of sleep per week and then try to build your garage after you get off of work at 5 am.
Add to that the fun of a 2 year old and the babysitter quits with no notice. Had to deal with that for two weeks till we found another one.
But the best part-one morning I have the kids eating breakfast before the wife gets up and I am on the couch sipping on a barley pop watching the news.
She starts in with "what the hell are you doing, drinking a beer @ 7:00 am?"
"Honey, its 9 at night for me"
"but watching you drink a beer while the kids are eating breakfast...."
"Ok, don't watch me drink a beer and I won't watch you put on your makeup"
And that's how the fight started.......

To those that work the Zombie Squad. It aint easy.....
Sure ain't. I've been pushin' graves for 10yrs now; just glad to say I've held a job for that long at this point.

[ROFL1] I've been there- when I got off work at 0400 I would come home and my roommate would be getting up for work about an hour and a half later and I'd be in the living room play Xbox drinking beer... He never got mad a me though. He thought it was kind of amusing. One man's morning is another man's evening.[Beer]

I've done security jobs in the past and have a few friends who are doing it now. The best part about graveyard shift private security is that you pretty much have complete autonomy and can do whatever you want with that time. A lot of guys try to "make money while they sleep," but they usually don' last long. The most screwed up thing about security is that, typically, the cops hate you. If you run into a problem and call local law enforcement for assistance, dispatch either will not send anyone or will flat out tell you "don't call us anymore." Seriously, that is a real problem.
While working in another state as a night watchman, I saw a tweaker trespassing on a construction site at 0300 to steal metal. When I approached him, he threatened me with a pistol. I backed off and called local law enforcement and they said they'd send someone right over . . . a half hour later the tweaker got in his car and left. The cops still hadn't showed up so I called them again with the car's description and plate number. They never called back or showed up.
Just a couple weeks ago, a friend who is a supervisor at a site near DIA had a problem with a naked screaming guy hiding in the bushes who started chasing him. He got in his car, drove a safe distance away, and called law enforcement. "You're not in immediate danger, and we don't want any more calls from that site" the dispatcher told him.
Oh . . . and with most private security jobs the client does not want to pay extra for or risk the liability of having an armed guard (which typically doubles their cost), so you do not have an issued sidearm and are told not to detain or arrest anyone, just to call police if you run into a problem . . . whereupon the police tell you to go to hell.
It is a great job aside from the no money and no respect thing. You get paid to show up on time, walk around a few times, and write a report. A retarded chimpanzee can do that . . . but you might be surprised how many new hires get fired within the first month for failing to do the bare minimum expected of them. Easiest job in the world. You can lift weights, talk on the phone, and read books most of the night. It is a lot better than collecting unemployment when you are between jobs.

I used to work for lighttning mobile and the do property maintanance during the night and I was originaly hired to work on there trucks and then they started having me sweep parking lots and power wash shit. One night they had me go with the other power wash guy to Denver health and we had to wait for a dumpster to be picked up and when that happenend I was terified. The dumpster they picked up was the biohazard dumpster and below the dumpster was blood, needles, cathaders, other bodily fluids, and they also just put all the other trash from the hospital in this dumpster and it was a copactor it was the most nasty shit I've ever seen and I threw up a couple times also they just wash the needles into the drainage system so watch out next time you are in the platte. After that I quit because I'm not about to risk my health to work at 3am that was the only night job I had
I work graves now (2100 to 0700). The worst part for me is when the sun comes up. My body starts to say nighty nighty and I start dragging ass.

I'll pass that along to my friend, but he works 60 hour weeks and has serious health problems and probably doesn't want to talk to some reporter on camera.

Snow removal is what always killed me. In a big storm you work for days on end, leaving the truck only when you need to pee, get gas or have some type of mechanical issue. There were many a nights that I started seeing things, and am damn lucky that I never hit anything. Nodded off a few times and woke up, up against a snow pile, that's always fun. like other have said that hour or two before the sun comes up is the worst, but I always seemed to get a new wind once the sun came up.
I worked a rotating shift for about 21 years. That was the job I had when I retired. The rotation was 6 days, 6 evenings, then 7 nights.
I've always kinda had sleep problems. When I was in my early teens my folks took me to a sleep specialist doctor. He said I had/have a 'displaced sleep pattern'. Basically I tend to be a night person. I went to another specialist at 30 years old and was told the same thing. He told me a night job would improve my health. When I was working a day shift I slept 8 to 10 hours a day and was generally tired. On graves I slept 4 or 5 hours and felt great. Now that I am retired I sleep when I feel like it which is I usually go to bed about sunrise and wake up 4 or 5 hours later. I also tend to sleep better in light than the dark.
Blue Collar.
I'd like you to know at four in the morning, things are coming' to mind
All I see, all I've done, and those I hope to find
I'd like to remind you at four in the morning my world is very still
The air is fresh under diamond skies, makes me glad to be alive.
Bachman Turner Overdrive
Then when your 4 hours into your sleep and some asshole calls your phone 3 times in a row. Motherfucker if I don't answer the first call leave a god damn message don't just call three times back to back. I wanted to strangle Bill..instead I gave him a price where I'm going to strangle his wallet. Going to enjoy CO-AR-15 for a while and back to sleep.
