View Full Version : Military gear Question
I got to thinking about this again last night so I figured I would ask before I forget.
What does the military do with all of the gear from the soldiers after a major deployment? Obviously there would be thousands of used weapons that might not be in the best of shape to reissue.

They replace the broken or wore out pieces such as springs and parts on the bolt carrier groups.
They are returned to servicable condition and reissued.

what about optics such as trijicon or aimpoint

So if the weapons are not able to be reissued by replacing small parts I would guess it gets destroyed.

There is this wonderful, magical place on base called DRMO. It is where beat-up gear goes to die, but run like a military flea market. My SSGT used to send me there a lot to try to find spare radio and vehicle parts that we could get for cheap. They just charge it back to your unit. Now if only they would open it up to the public. . .

Fast and furious?

From what I have seen, you wont want them after the military doesn't want them. Those things are re-issued until they are beat to hell.

There are SOME DRMO (Defense Reutilization Marketing Office IIRC) outlets that are open to the public. I remember buying government issue notepads and bound notebooks at the DRMO at Ft. Meade for a fraction of what I would have paid for equivalents at Office Depot or Staples -- but I was careful to keep my DRMO receipt and the pricetags on them so no one would think I was lifting them from supplies at work.
I used to be registered with the DRMO website but the problem is that they tend to sell things in units of pallets -- except for the handful of retail stores, most of DRMO is push the excess or worn material to surplus stores and other outlets who wanted to buy in mass quantities. IIRC, there's a DRMO over at Ft. Carson but not sure what they carry or how easy it is to get there.

Maybe a group buy type of thing for a few pallets of DRMOed goods? [ROFL1]

The military has many levels of maintenance. a lot of weapons go to depot level where they are completely refurbed. We had a few M2s that had been through several wars. If they cannot be fixed at depot level then they are destroyed.
The current supply of toys like aimpoints and ACOGs from Iraq were left there and signed over to DoS. Trust me...you don't want them.

If you really want military surplus you can go to http://www.govliquidation.com/ and buy stuff at auction by the pallet load. Seriously - what would you do with 200 ALICE Packs?
Or you can go to http://www.unclesamsretailoutlet.com/ and buy one or two items.
The only problem with both places is the stock changes frequently and if you don't buy it when you see it, it might not be there next week or next month.

Once took a ton of computers and office furniture there. Didn't see anything cool. We also took 80 Vietnam flaks there. Honestly most of it crap.
Busted ass weapons are usually refurbished as much as possible- if they're not great but can still fire, sometimes they end up in BCT armories... My issued M-16 in Basic was a M-16A1 stamped to A2 but it still fired F/A when I went to "burst". That was fun! But it was still a POS.
Even if they're run like hell and treated like shit by soldiers who don't know the difference between an M1114 and a hole in the ground when it comes to maintenance, I still want a retired HMMWV (slant back) to fix up and turn into a nice work vehicle/trail rig. [Beer]
Does anyone think that would be a cool job to refurb weapons? I do! [AR15]
