Security firm to hold zombie crisis scenario

SAN DIEGO — Forget the H1N1 pandemic. Could a future crisis arise from an outbreak of viruses that destroy brain cells and render people violently catatonic, like zombies?

The far-fetched scenario of a government grappling a zombielike threat — think movies like “Night of the Living Dead” or, more comically, “Zombieland” — has captured the attention and imagination of Brad Barker, president of the security firm HALO Corp.

Next month, his outfit will incorporate — no kidding — zombies into a disaster-crisis scenario at the company’s annual Counter-Terrorism Summit in San Diego, a five-day event providing hands-on training, realistic demonstrations, lectures and classes geared to more than 1,000 military personnel, law enforcement officials, medical experts, and state and federal government workers. It's actually not as far fetched as one might think. There are several known fungi and protozoa that already effectively make zombies out of living creatures. Look up toxoplasmosa gondii for one. It can be carried by most warm blooded animals, including humans... It makes rats actually go toward cats, so they will get eaten and the protozoa can reproduce in the cats intestines. The protozoa can only reproduce in feline guts... The scary part is about 1/3 of humans carry this protozoa too, and it's changing. It's actually already showing up in studies related to human suicide. You think I'm kidding? Look it up.

That doesn't even touch on the neurotoxin possibilities too! Let the zombie hoards begin!

Not really. There are way more interesting Level 3 & 4 research centers located in the most unassuming places. Most of the research @ PI has been slowly but steadily moved to other areas of the country.

Along that train of thought AI (Avian Influenza) has been documented to mutate numerous times over it's path. From bird, through mosquito, fleas, tics, to other animals, including swine and of all things dolphins!.
Similar scenarios play out on a daily basis with anti-biotic resistant bacteria. We develop better meds the diseases adapt. Having become complacent with almost non-existent diseases left the world sitting on it's hands, when small out breaks of typhoid, scarlet fever, and smallpox pop up then vanish.

Michael Crighton wrote Hot Zone many years ago. The area it takes place in here in the US [Reston VA]. If you had the chance to read the book good for you. If not while taking place in 89. the implications of it are still valid today.
