o/u question

This is probly a stupid question but im having a hard time finding the answer. Is it bad to shoot 00 buck through a o/u like a browning? I know there made for shooting birdshot but is it ok to shoot the more powerfull loads out of them?

Yep. No problem. A quality over under has a stronger action than a semi or pump. Browning uses the same hinging mechanism in their 3.5" citori as their 3" citori models, just different chamber.

Although a quality O/U has a stronger lock, they usually have lighter barrels than pumps/autos.
Firing large diameter shot in a O/U is NOT recommended because sustained firings of these rounds through any choke has buldged many a O/U barrel at the choke.

If you must fire these rounds make sure you have a Cylinder Bore choke installed.

This is the same reason that if you decide to fire steel shot from an O/U (even steel shot rated O/U's) it is suggested that you get extended chokes which takes the choke (barrel restriction) outside the barrel.

While I agree with some models, and most of the older models (we had one we had to use No-Tox in, too thin for steel), the new Field / Hunting models have pretty thick barrels.

In my opinion, the Citori that was designed around large shot 3.5", for example 3.5" magnum T or F shot in steel is more than capable of taking some 2.75" lead buck.

I also always shoot skeet I / skeet II as my chokes, so they are pretty dang open.

Of course always check on your specific model as YMMV.

Thank you for the replys guys. I mainly asked this if shtf to make surely my browning citori could handle a diet of buck because birdshot in my eyes is useless in a self defence situation. The o/u would be my last choice for a shtf weapon but it is far better than a sharp stick.
