View Full Version : Just got back from vacation. Part 2
And, of course, no trip to Oahu is complete if you don't go see Pearl Harbor. Here are a few pictures from the U.S.S. Missouri and the memorial at the U.S.S. Arizona. The Missouri was still seeing combat duty as recently as Operation Desert Storm in Kuwait so it has had weapons upgrades such as Tomahawk missiles. You can see the oil sheen above the Arizona in one of the pictures from the oil that is still leaking out of it after all of these years.

Thank you for posting these.
For me, this would be the only reason to go to Hawaii.
My Great Uncle Art Cook was on the U.S.S. Nevada Dec. 7, 1941.

It was a great experience. The day was perfect for it too, in my opinion. It had been raining that morning and was still very cloudy and overcast while we were there. It really made the mood feel right for visiting a memorial where over 1,000 people lost their lives.
Here is the wall with the list of names of those who died on the Arizona that day.

I think it's crazy that oil still leaks up

You'd think some tree-hugging organization would squeal and squawk until the govenment did something about it.
You could actually watch drops of oil float up from the ship. I just couldn't get a good photo of the oil drops rising because of the glare on top of the water.

My father was a Submarine Crewman in the South Pacific in WWII, I spent an enormous amount of time aboard the USS Bowfin while I lived there. Gave me chills to be where my father served during the War.

And she'll fit through the Panama Canal. [Awesom]

I didn't go on the Bowfin. Those older subs make me claustrophobic. Plus, they are full of toe-stubbers, knee-bangers, and head-knockers. [Coffee]
Awesome pics, thanks for sharing Ray
I think it's crazy that oil still leaks up
I recall from one of those documentries, That since it was filled up and ready to go, There is enough oil on board, that at the current rate of leakage, it will be leaking for 500 years.
The only way they had to "clean it up" at the time of the documentry,Had a better than 50% chance of resulting in a spill that would devestate the harbor.
Thanks for the pic's, Ray.

We went to Pearl/Arizona Memorial on Veterans Day. There were a lot of WWII vets there for the occasion. My allergies got really bad for awhile there.

Ha. Makes me feel old. I am about the right age to have been on board during it's time in Kuwait.

Dad was there for all of it. I was about two at the time. So assuming you were in your early 20's at that time, you are by no means old.

Yeah, I would have been about 20 or 21 at the time. [Beer]
Now, would you remind my poor body that I am really not all that old? [Coffee]
