Dear Diary, (haha)
I was teaching beginning band this morning and the most horrible thing happened. My trumpet slipped out of my hand during a gesture (conducting and playing with the kids at the same time) and it fell to the floor. The bell is completely bent/crushed... I am in a state of utter and unfathomable depression right now. It is the only trumpet I had left (sold the others for debt repayments, etc) and now it is damaged (possibly destroyed). Oh, it's definitely a Monday. How will I come up with the funds to get it fixed? Grr... Off to Granier (one of the local music stores in the Springs) after school to see if they can work their voodoo on my baby. So disastrous... Poor Bear....

FYI: (Like you really care but...) The bell of a trumpet is a "special" area. It is crafted (a real trumpet, not a "made in china" POS) by hand and is considered the resonance chamber of the instrument. Any little ding/damage to it and it can offset the resultant resonance and thus create tuning inconsistencies that were not present before. It also plays a drastic effect on the actual sound production of the horn/human combination. All I can say is THANK GOD that I don't own a Monette and it didn't happen to that instrument!! Of course, if I actually owned a Monette, I'd never take it to school in the first place. But hey, can't win 'em all. Btw, during the down times of repairs, if anyone has a Monette Prana XLT Bb trumpet they'd like to let me borrow (and make love too) or purchase for me (hey, you know $7K and a two year wait is just chump change! HAHA) I would greatly appreciate it. HAHAHAHA.

Thanks guys, I'm going to go cry in my corner now... Poor trumpet...

But seriously, sorry buddy. That really sucks. Hopefully it can be repaired. Who knows, maybe it will be better than before with it's own unique character.

Well... legally I have to say it "slipped out of my hand"... HAHAHA. No I didn't throw it, I was conducting in multimeter while trying to play and it just slipped... horrible. On the bright side, yes, my BEGINNING students are learning multimeter... good kids.

I'm sure it can be fixed, but it'll never have the same character... but hopefully all won't be lost. As I said, it's the only Bb I have left and it's a pretty decent horn. A repaired horn will never be better than an original, even with full overhauls, there are just too many little differences that up to a lot of change. Once a bell is dented, it's a different horn forever. But again, I'm sad, but I'm sure it'll be fine.

However, seriously, if anyways wants to buy a Monette... HA!!

Let's not rule out Divine Providence in all of this. Who says a repair can't be better than original? He does that with people all the time... Just sayin'!

PM me with the details when you get an estimate.

How could Tinelement help? No cash/donations needed, I'll figure it out. Just bummed.

True, God does work in mysterious ways and it "could" come to pass that it's better than ever... but, as Danny called to our attention this past Sunday, I'm one that won't hold my breath for that. It's something I'm pretty confident in the with metalurgy and the process used to mend musical instruments....

No donations needed, shouldn't be but a $100 (or less I'm hoping). I'll survive and get it done. Stopped by the store though and it'll have to wait until Friday as it's damaged enough to be more than a one stop roll job and I have gigs the next few nights and since it's my only horn... well, that'll be embarrassing tomorrow night playing the National Anthem with a rumpled horn! HA. But hopefully no one will really notice.

Yeah, and a lot of you guys alway offer and it makes me feel great, but I do have a job and am digging my way out of debt. Yes, things are tight but others are waaaaay worse than I. I tell you what, if you'd like to give something, PM me and I'll give you my PP account. However, I don't expect anything and I'm not soliciting anything, and I seriously doubt I'd be able to "pay back" anyone within this decade. Yes, it would help ease the burden and such, but I'm not begging. You could also donate to the forum instead too, I know they need some help and I'm not able to do it.

Hindsight, but don't they have "slings" or something or a big lanyard? You know, to use when you get your Monette

As awesome as that would be, it will forever be "just a dream". There's no way I'd ever be able to afford it, even if I wasn't neck deep in debt. They are beautiful horns though. Y'all should check the pics and sound clips on the website:
http://www.monette.net/newsite/instrument_models.htm

Horns go from about $4K to over $30K depending on model, etc...

I know you guys probably don't have the ears to tell the difference between that and a regular mass production, but it is there. Man, they play themselves... So badly do I want a Prana XLT Bb trumpet in a silver finish and a Prana LT C in Raw brass, (gotta have a pair right? HAHAHAHA). They are on the cheaper side but still about $6-7K each. But I'm aware it'll always just be a dream.

Why the big differences in price? ($4k - 30K) Well, lots of reasons, first is simply the man hours required to hand make these beasts. On top of that, gold market prices always influence the final tally. Then, some of the features that you can use such as precious stones for the bell inlays or finger buttons or engravings if you want to make it personally yours. Also, the finishes, etc all play a role as well. It's truly an American made "custom" instrument. As far as the sound is concerned, when you add mass it helps to dampen the vibrations and darken the sound. That also adds to the price for the extra material, etc.

I knew an older gentleman back in TX when I was there for my undergrad. He was an instrument collector. He had a Monette. I got to play it several times on some great gigs. He liked my playing and what I did/stood for, etc and tried to give it me upon graduation as a "pay it forward" type thing, I just couldn't take it knowing the price, his collection, etc... Kick myself every day for that decision. Eh, hindsight is 20/20.

Anyways, enough complaining. My horn will be fixed by Friday, and all will be halfway well again... hopefully.

[Beer]

I'm seriously contemplating trying to find a way to market a tacticool sling for saxophones and other neck strap instruments.... lol....

You got me thinking now. You think guns are expensive, here's my wish list comparison:

Guns (customs w/mods):
G20 - $500
Noveske 14.5 - $2400
HD 12ga - $1200
Clays 12ga - $1000
.308 - $3000
.22LR rifle - $800
.22lr pistol - $400
Total - $9,300

Trumpets (just "standard horns" [everyday use] not extended [Eb, D, herald, etc]):
Schilke P5/4 piccolo trumpet - $4000
Eclipse Bb cornet, savannah finish - $4000
Taylor Flugehorn, rose brass - $5000
Monette Prana XLT Bb trumpet - $6000
Monette Prana LT C trumpet - $6000
Total - $25K

Course I'd love a Monette Prana 900 cornet instead of the Eclipse and Monette traditional flugel instead of the Taylor... but I'd have to win the lotto for that, lol. Ok, enough day dreaming, gotta go teach. Peace.

Like crap, but I honestly don't think the general musically uneducated audience can really tell. It definitely "blows" differently though, a lot more resistance... grrr... I played the National Anthem last night for a volleyball game and I almost cracked a note. I have another gig tomorrow night but it's on a cornet that's I'm borrowing (British Brass Band), so my trumpet it in the shop and will get it back Friday morn.

Ok, you guys are awesome. It's dusty in here. You guys contributed and I only had to put $50 for the repairs, which was do-able... Such a blessing... Dang, where'd all this dust come from in here, my eyes are running. I even got the horn back early, you can still see a crease from where they rolled out the damage, but its as good a job as can be expected from a 6ft drop. I'm in awe of this forum. Thank you to all who helped out.... Amazing.
