View Full Version : USPS
A couple weeks ago I shipped my little brother some stuff for his first semester of college. I bought him some expensive protein and such for the package and shipped it via USPS 5-day (already almost $15). He didn't receive it until today which is a few days late. When he got it, it was all broken and had a note from USPS telling him that the package has been damaged and to notify USPS if about any missing articles. He is missing the protein and supplements and a bunch of other things.
So, he goes and tells them at his office in middle of no where Georgia and they tell him they can't help him. I did not insure the package. So are we just screwed because I neglected to get insurance? Anybody have any suggestions?

Yep, without insurance you are screwed. Next time send it FedEX and insure it.

I was afraid of that. The only reason why I shipped USPS is because its to a PO BOX. I get a shipping discount at work or I would have done that...

I guess we now know where all of those fired TSA employees went! :D
its automatically insured for 100 bucks
There are a couple of old threads about the perils of shipping Post Office. Dont do it!!
It doesn't matter they left a note stating to notify them if anything was missing there is your ins now. I'd use the letter and fight it. Normally I'd say no ins then you're screwed but if you get a pic of the damage and have the letter they left then go ahead and be an A-hole. USPS needs to take better care of their packages. I work with UPS, USPS and FedEx everyday and they either take their time or play Football at break with peoples packages.

Source?
I know UPS does that, but USPS doesn't.

You're right! UPS is automatically ins for the first $99 free but USPS is not unless you pay for it.

My experience has been that no matter what if the USPS owes you $$$ you will never see it.
I sold an item COD once. The PO sent the money to the wrong address. I fought for 2 years trying to get my $75[Bang]
What a shame, but you're probably better off kissing that stuff goodbye. The USPS has turned into a pimp for junk mail.
Yeah you're SOL.
There should be a PO box you can ship stuff to your brother and THEN a physical address for overnight/non postal items.
Tell your bro to put the bong down, look through his freshman packet and give you the physical ADDRESS..

I blame their union. Seriously though that sucks man. I don't send any packages USPS, I pay a little more for UPS.

That is a shame.
As for the junk mail pimp, when was the last time you/anyone sent a letter?
The USPS has its problems but is still the gold standard for delivery on the planet.
563 MILLION pieces of mail a day, 171 BILLION a year.
Someone somewhere is going to get screwed, but it aint personal ;)
By contrast UPS does 16 Million a day.
usps has blatantly stolen 2 packages at the greeley downtown location
have him rent a box at a ups store. physical adress not po box and they accept all carriers.
I believe you are SOL with USPS.
UPS and Fedex both insure the package for the first $100. you pay more for it after that amount.

He could just as easily insure it with USPS.
That is a shame.

...and when I used to ship thousands of dollars a week I had FAR more instances of shipper fuck ups with UPS than I did USPS. USPS was cheaper and also offered free Saturday shipment as well as packing supplies and boxes and what not. Making the move from UPS to USPS when I was doing tons of shipping was one of the best decisions I ever made.
Bottom line is if it's something expensive or you're concerned about it arriving safely... GET INSURANCE. This goes for ANY carrier. If you choose to take a risk on shipping some protein powder and other less-than-fragile items and not cover it with insurance than that's YOUR choice to self insure. I do it all the time and if the package gets screwed up I don't expect all those who paid for the insurance to cover my loss. Sorry but you didn't insure and I don't care if there was a singed note from the person who threw it out of their LRV at 75mph claiming responsibility, if you don't have insurance you have nothing. Lesson learned and move on with your life.
That is a shame.

USPS is fine for parcels, WITH insurance. I send a few cards and letters a year.
I get a couple bills a month, one from the local govt for water, most are electronic. 90% of my mail goes straight into the trash bin. So the taxpayer is effectively subsidizing my trash can while i have to pay inflated rates for first class mail.
A few recent articles.
Like this one: (http://money.cnn.com/2012/03/20/smallbusiness/postal-service-junk-mail/index.htm)
In 2011, advertising mail volume was 84.7 billion pieces of mail and total first-class mail was 73.5 billion.Or this one... (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0312/74294.html)
For less than 15 cents apiece, our customers can send fliers, menus, brochures and advertisements in highly targeted ways,” said Paul Vogel, president and chief marketing and sales officer for the Postal ServiceOr here.
“While Advertising Mail takes up a larger percentage of mail today, it takes on average three pieces of mail to make up the contribution of a single piece of First-Class mail.”
But in 2010, the Postal Service found it was actually closer to a 1:2 ratio, with First-Class Mail bringing in $34 billion while mail termed “Advertising” brought in $17.3 billion (http://about.usps.com/future-postal-service/postalfacts-2011.pdf).I think pimp is an appropriate term.
