View Full Version : T-rats, It's whats for dinner.

As i have talked about before one needs to blend in your food preparations with the normal day to day stuff.

We use lot's of dehydrated goods and things we have put up. So back in 08 I think MRE Depot had a crapload of T-rations for sale at very cheap prices ($7-$10 per tray) and if ya spend over $200 you got free shipping. For those that do not know what a T-rat is think MRE in bulk packages to feed lots of Soldiers.

Each T-rat is good for 15-20 guys and they come in Entrees and side dishes with Breakfast and Lunch/Dinner selections.

I bought 40 trays weighing 250lbs total. Shelf life if stored correctly is at least 10 years. Mine are dated 08/2007 so it has been 5 years now.

Time to break one out. The pick was Chicken breasts in gravy. serves 18. All in all very good stuff and once it was done even the pickiest eater would have eaten it. Made up some rice with spices and after splitting it up froze the rest.

The downside to T-rats is that you need a large number of people to eat it or a way to freeze/refrigerate the rest. In the real world this would be 12 servings for hungry people. My thought on T-rats if truly needed would be for wintertime use since one would be able to freeze portions for later meals.

Sure it is. Just have to give it a chance. Just like anything canned the finished product is much better. ;)

Ah yes the good ole T-rats!!!!
We lived on them things months on end out in the field!!And then some!!
All in all they taste pretty darn good and are fairly cheap as well.
And well, beats cooking sometimes.[Beer]

There is no food item (almost) that cannot be made somewhat edible, using garlic, oregano, CHILI powder (flakes and variants) or good old salt & pepper.

That looks tasty, i doubt most folks would know they are T-rats unless you told them.

Yep. That is the challange with the grand kids. If you only let them see the finished product all is ok. [Flower]

I loved me some lasagne and some cheese grits. The poodle peckers were OK if you recooked them on the pot-bellied stove.

Gross sponge bob.

T-rats are worse than MREs, they don't have M&Ms or tabasco to drown out the taste of Country Captain Chicken.

Your just in that first phase of leaving the Army. 10 years from now some things will not be as bad as they seemed. [Flower]

Ate some of these on a deployment in Africa. Seemed like there was some kind of pineapple cake that tasted okay.

Just like MRE's they have got better. I remember a time when there were 4-5 good ones and 10-15 bad ones 25 years ago. [Beer]

Yeah the current crop of MREs ain't bad. Wouldn't want to spend a month eating them, but for a couple days in the woods, it's definitely decent enough grub.

Had them for up to 7 months at a time. Not all 3 meals but more than I wanted. [Flower]
