Looking to buy a kit or two and seeing that I have never built one a little guidance would be nice.

I probably wont have a kit, depending on when it takes place, but I would like to attend a tupperware party, too. Sorry, sorry I mean build party. I would like to see how it is done.

I'm not sure when the next one will be,somtimes their just a spontanious occurance when a couple of guys get together with some parts ;)

Just keep your eyes peeled for postings on an "official build party"
Usualy jreifsch80 is the unofficial orchastrator of these things. And maybee if you ask him nicely in a pm he might be able to get one going soon.Which would be good,I need to do a few things myself ;)

As a new guy to the forum, I'm interested in this as well... even if it's just to hang out and learn. I'm debating between a 7.62 pistol to SBR and a 5.45 build as a regular shooter. I can't afford a $1200 arsenal, so learning how to build seems like a better option.

jreifsch80
10-31-2012, 09:47
for half the price of a 1200$ arsenal you could build a 7.62 pistol and a 5.45 rifle just about

USAFGopherMike

"and"? Not one or the other? You mean for $600 I could build both? That would be better than good.

bryjcom

For $1200 you could build both..

As far as build parties go, they are generally up north in the Windsor/Greeley area.

Either me or Justing(Jreifsch80) can help you... No "party" needed.

What would you say is a good source for kits? How important is matching numbers? Are there reputable shops in the FoCo-Greeley-Loveland area? This information is all greatly appreciated.

Apex.
Matching #'s is hard to come by anymore. Not a big deal to me though unless it's something rare.

I can't look at apex from where I am right now, but I'll check it out tonight. I'm leaning heavily towards a bulgy 74 kit from armsofamerica. They have barrels as well since the kits don't come with them. I didn't see anything other than blanks/flats for receivers on their webpage, so I think I'll try to pick up a Nodak from somewhere. Do you guys build from flats/blanks? Having searched a bit in this section, it sounds like you guys have a full up machine shop when you have your build parties. I've not done a lot of armoring, just takedown/cleaning on a few weapons and basic weapons training. What else could I be reading to get smart on building?

Hardly. Go to some of the AK fourms. Some of those builders use all thread, a HF press and map gas, not exactly Boeing aero.

I have been tossing the idea around in my head to either build, have built or buy an AK. I am interested in building an AK at some point and would love to sit in or maybe even build one if a build party ever gets together. I have built several FALs so I have a bit of experience with refinishing and building.

Currently I do not have a kit or receiver but could probably get one together with a bit of notice.

I've gently hammered a barrel in a trunnion before lol, those Khyber pass dudes don't just build their own ak's with basic hand tools they literally make all the parts there in their dirt floor caves haha. While my riveting tool isn't Boeing it literally is from a friend of mine the works for Lockheed lol

I dont have one for the bulged trunnions, but I wonder if it would be the same as the yugos?

Ah,ok so bulged rpk trunnion is the same as the yugo.
I think somebody here has the center die for the yugo flats.

NO! The Romanian RPK recievers are NOT THE SAME. I believe the yugos are shorter than the average AK receiver.

Yugo is yugo. Romanian is everything else.

bryjcom
11-03-2012, 22:58
OK correction. The yugo reciever is the same length... I just checked mine but I remember reading something about how the yugos won't work with the romy RPKs....

Better call curtis from AK builder to find out.

I think it might be the barrel dimensions that are different, but yes give Curtis a call to verify.
The die for the yugo recievers should work on the rpk's-1.5mm flats

I think the die will work but I think the rear rivet holes might be different and possibly the angle of the rear of the receiver. Not to mention the slot for the rear sling loop.

I was doing a little research with my google-foo and it seems that the yugos can be "made" to work but was having trouble finding any true testimony.

Now that you mention it Bry,the back angle is different due to the yugo rear trunion being more like a milled stock version.I think it might be mentioned on the akforum on how to make it work.

I think the only way would be to add metal and then weld it up.The NDS -7 is what he needs. http://www.nodakspud.com/page2.htm

palepainter
11-04-2012, 08:33
I was hoping to build an under folder or side folder out of the rpk. I know I will have to mill down the rear trunion and weld up a few holes for the under folder. Maybe there is a better flat or pre bent to start with for that route. But the side folder should be an easy one.

Yea that would do the trick.
If he wants to do an underfolder he van use a regular yugo flat, but have to score a yugo underfolder trunnion and folder.
I think there is a rommy rpk underfolder trunnion, not sure if it would work as far as hole placement but the width of it will work.

But they are scarce as hens teeth and pricy as heck!Yugo trunnions are more available and not all that costly.Last I saw a complete one with the folder was in the $75 range

While waiting, you can get your compliance parts together and if the kit didn't come demilled, you can start on that.

Yup It's a barreless kit.
One thing I noticed you have to watch for with the new American barrels is some of them do not come crowned.Which shouldnt be to hard to remedy.I'm sure BP Tactical can hook you up on that end.
Like OneGuy said while your waiting you can start on the demill if it isn't allready. You also can do the prep work on the barrell and parts, and get the compliance parts.

What are the Maxium number of parts i can keep to remain compliant, is the real question.
http://gunwiki.net/Gunwiki/LegalFederal922rParts

http://gunwiki.net/Gunwiki/BuildAkVerifyCompliance

Here are the US 922 parts available today.

Flash Hider
Hammer, trigger, Sear (H/T/S) 2 parts
Gas piston
Bbl
receiver
Furniture 3 parts, stock hand guards & pistol grip.

Tapco Magazine (3 US parts) Mag body, follower & floor plate. All for under $15.!!

If you have a stock (non us mf) bbl you could keep the original f/hider, providing it is permanently attached. You could do this because once perm attached the bbl (by law) is no longer a "Threaded" bbl, eliminating the need of a 922 part.

I don't blame you at all. I was about to buy a tin from J&G for $200 because I figured Military Shooters was too great a deal and would be sold out before I got a chance. My FFL called. Receiver is and ready for pick up. It'll be in my hands tomorrow. Once everybody else gets theirs, it sounds like we'd have several to build. Build party in Feb? I don't have any of the smithing specific tools either so it will be a learning experience for me.

Hey all, I just stumbled onto this forum while searching for a gunsmith to build a Bulgarian kit I have been sitting on for a couple years. It has a virgin Bulgarian made barrel and I have a Nodak Spud receiver and everything else including fire control group and rivets, unfortunately I lack the know-how and tools to do it my self, Would it be to late for me to get in on this build party? I have 4 cases of surplus 5.45 that is burning a hole in my pocket as well as a new membership to a range.

Welcome! The build party isn't scheduled yet, but we've been talking about one for some time. Rachel Ray is one of the experts. I like you have a complete kit to assemble. Do you have all your 922r parts?

Thanks for the welcome Mike. Yes I have a US trigger group (tapco), pistol grip, stock, hand guard, magazine body, floor plate and follower so I am good to go on 922-R

Yup Rachel Ray is one of the orchestrators of these things.Should be orginazing one soon.We usualy like doing them in the summer months when we all can get together on a weekend and enjoy hanging out and not freezing.
Allthough with the way things are and with the amount of newcomers who we just dont know ,it would be by invite only.
Mike you could pm me or jreifsch80 aka Rachel Ray to see if we have a clue as to when.

Between the both of us we have all the tools needed and also can do the finish work as well-parking and painting.Might need a seperate party for the finish work plus some way to heat the park solution and bake the paint.Wife gets ticked when I'm boiling away my parts on her stove :)
I would love to do some kind of burner setup so I can use my park pans..I saw in the kit and build yourself section on how Jerry made a setup to cure his paint that I might try .

My two receivers just came in from Nodak, just need to wait for the background check.. I now have two Bulgarian AK74 kits, new barrels and receivers.. I need to remove the barrel components from the demilled barrel scraps and repopulate on the us barrels and then build the rifles.. Now I am just trying to decide if I should send these off for assembly or wait to see if anything happens here. I can refinish these myself (parkerize and cerakote) no problem.. If I got into one of these build parties can I expect the final result/build quality (functionality/reliability) to be the same as sending off to someone like Randy Kline or Gunplumber?

All of my experience is with building FALs.. pretty simple stuff once you get into it. The AKs look like a lot more work to get them right. If anyone is looking to build a FAL I have the tools and know how to get it done if anyone wants to do an AK/FAL build party.

I gotta say through the years and as many builds I have done they come out quite as good if not better.(Personal I think gunplumber is one arogant sob ahole)
But now mind you at a build party YOU are the ones building, not us-we just assist, and give guidance...Now that disclaimer out of the way..

Since building here with the usual crew I find their builds to be of high quality and I haven't seen any reliability issues.Of course there are a few on some "custom" builds ie caliber conversions and blowbacks but thats a norm when doing those.

I would love to do a FAL. one day but I missed the boat on kits and kick myself in the ass for not getting into them the same time I did AK'S.

Nah,nuthin like that :)
Once we get to know you a bit more, and get to meet you at the range then it shouldn't be a problem.
We all have met at one point or another-one member meets another and gets to know them through deaals and such, tells the other guys and things happen.

Theres group shoots, gatherings all the time.Keep on the look for them when posted and just put your name in.the more we meet the tighter the community becomes and more enjoyable :)

It is always assumed that I am the one doing the building, I'd want to do it myself anyway. :)

I kinda figured that, just had to throw the disclaimer out to educate some of the new members. ;)
You FAL guys would never let anyone else even touch your kits :) (can't say I blame them) One day I'll get to do one, trouble is finding a decent kit nowadays that wont cost a second mortgage.

On a serious note, I look forward to meeting up with you guys on the range some day soon, I will keep a watch out for a group shoot.
