View Full Version : Is Coke really that big of a problem in the US?

I'm watching a show right now on NGC and the DEA attack on columbia cocaine and the submarines they use.

I don't think I have ever met anyone who has admitted to coke use, I know I have run into several, same with meth, but how big of a problem is it? I guess my line of work deals with pretty straight laced people who have to keep clean or they are out of a career.

It would be interesting to know.
I know it was a big deal back in the 80's.And some people are still stuck in that mindset.

I don't think it is as big as weed, but I bet it is second place. I think a lot of people use it recreationally, without blowing their money on it or ruining their lives. I recently found out that a lot of people I know, and would never have thought, apparently occasionally use coke. I'm torn because while I take a pretty libertarian stance on drug use, I still don't have a very high opinion of it. On the other hand, if all these people have been doing it, and I didn't even know about it, it seems like they've got it under control.

On a side note, remember that no tv show would ever present a program about something that "wasn't really a big deal." I had to explain this to someone who thought that Denver had some of the worst gangs in the country after watching an episode of Gangland. I told him that no one would watch an episode if they advertised it as, "This week on Gangland...the gangs of Denver, CO. They're really not all that bad."

wow, didn't realize it was that bad. I knew a few guys who did weed but none who did coke, but I was a jock so most guys didn't risk getting kicked off any of the teams.

It depends on the type of ecstasy. Some are mixed with coke, others caffeine, sugar, cat tranquilizers, and plenty of other things.

OK, I admit it. I tried it once during my "I'm a citizen of the earth" days (we're talking 20+ years ago guys...I've grown up, a little). I tried it and thought "this shit just makes me all jumpy and nervous....this sucks, someone give me a joint". Not my kind of thing at all. I don't get it.

What, you don't want your bacon now? [ROFL1]

Not many of my friends did it then and none (that I know of) do it now. I can't even imagine any of my friends saying "Yo man! Cut me a line!"

These days, just a few good whiskey and Cokes will do just fine. (following Irving's thread closely [Coffee])

Well it's a big problem if you want more funding and continued employment as a DEA Agent. Thousands have made their careers fighting the "war on drugs", to hire more agents, get raises, buy newer equipment, etc. the risk must continuously escalate (read that "perceived higher stakes"). It's ironic in that it's a symbiotic relationship and despite making a career "fighting drugs" who really wants to put themselves out of a job? Drugs aren't the issue, money is the issue.

Most of the people I've known that did cocaine daily were nowhere close to rich (you see a lot being a bar owner) and that stereotype is partly propaganda that allows extreme actions against a group by demonizing them, cigarettes anyone?

As an example many of the members of this forum have expressed an irrational disgust and disdain for "hippies' that I would bet is attributable at least in part to vilification of non-conformist lifestyles. To effect sanctions against select groups they must first garner public support.

I personally knew of several cops and nearly a dozen doctors who regularly used cocaine . . . at least until they were eventually caught. It is also very popular in the restaurant industry, and many chefs use it.

The only reason truck drivers and airline pilots cut back is due to the random piss tests they're subjected to . . . although, unlike marijuana which takes a month to clear out of the system, cocaine usually is fully metabolized within 3 days.

Highly addictive, seriously illegal, more expensive than gold, and it makes users impotent and a little too much will blow out their heart . . . but some people seem to like it. Everyone I ever met who started abusing it became a major scumbag shortly thereafter. You cannot trust anyone who uses that crap.

You do realize that Colorado has the highest concentration of Sons Of Silence members in the nation, right? A good following of Hells Angels. And a pretty high number of 211 Crew members. Also, La Familia and a few other Hispanic/Mexican gangs....

While we don't have a high number of separate gangs, we have a shit ton of high profile gang members. Gang on Gang violence is fairly low though. At least the stuff you hear about.

There's even cartel out here. But again, they lay pretty low.

We have two enormous highways running straight through the "middle" of our state. I-70 and I-25 are practically yellow brick roads for illegal activities.

We aren't the first, we won't be the last.

Population increases, the number of bad guys increase as well.

Such is life.

Depends on where in the country you are with coke. Well off areas like Aspen and ritzy parts of California end up with some powder, but in poorer areas, crack is the real seller. (It's 3-4:1 coke:baking soda ratio if you're curious). Crack was huge in the "hoods" of East Texas.
Coke is addicting as hell. I knew a guy who put so much of that shit up his nose, that he had to have surgery to repair it. After surgery, since he couldn't snort it, he started smoking crack. And yes, he managed to hold down a full time job.

75% of (Hispanic) parole violators returned to CA prison systems are from CO.
Russian mafia, Koreans/ Asians coming up the ladder, Flying Dragons are in & out of the metro area ,same for other well or lesser known members, underlings and KA's

Regarding drugs, as mentioned without high numbers put out by the DEA, funding, search and seizure, ill gotten gains will fall by the wayside, hence no funding. We are adults you figure out what is fact or fiction.

Right there is the key reason why you dont think that you have met anyone.
I have known a few folks, more then a few, who were regular users and you
would never tell. They use it like most alcoholics use it.

Its way more common then you think. Guys out in the field popped on U.A.s for coke
and meth more then any other substance. Coke seemed to be prevelent.

Id say close to 2 in 5 are regualr users.

Are you sure you graduated? You engrinsh not so good...

Ecstasy is made in the Netherlands (mostly) and smuggled in to the east coast. Does not contain cocaine either.

High school kids doing Coke everyday? Sound pretty expensive to me. Maybe a couple. Lots of rumors in High Schools eh?

Coke is a big deal because we make it one. Just like everything in the endless "War on Drugs". You dont see lots of Weed crime in Colorado anymore do you? That's because it is Pseudo-Legal now, if you do hear about a big bust it is being distributed to other states.

BTW Cocaine is one of the only things (or the only) that is cheaper today than when Reagan was president....

I've known one or two that got popped for it, but being career military followed by a job with a defense contractor I don't run into many either.

Personally, I have no use for it. My feeling is that if you need it, the character must be weak. Alcohol can be devastating when abused, and this stuff is easier to abuse. I have better things to do with my time and money.

There was a time when coke use had roughly the same stigma that weed carries now: not much at all. I don't know a whole lot of people going around bragging about their nose candy days but there's no shortage of people that were of age in the 80's that tried it.

I'm the exact same way. Too much to lose by even trying it. Always had that attitude throughout school as well thanks to sports. Never risked it, never tried weed, etc. Worst I did was drink a little before I turned 21...which I think should be 18 anyways.

Now I am too cheap to waste money on crap that will take away time from my life. Even going out to the bar is a rare occasion as I am not interested in spend $3+ a beer plus tip when I can get a case for ~$20 and drink at home where I don't have to worry about getting home.

There are a lot more people in this country using coke than most people realize. You just don't hear about it much because people who use don't run around telling everyone they use.

The user base of Cocaine in this country is shrinking, a lot of folks are making the switch to Molly these days. Molly is uncut MDMA and MDMA is the main ingredient in Ecstasy. A lot of the newer pop and hip hop artists mention Molly in their songs.

While there is a Molly and Cocaine problem in this country the user base is nowhere close to the user base of the biggest drug problem in America. The biggest drug problem in this country is abuse of prescription drugs. Especially among teenagers, kids get into their parents medicine cabinets and steal their pills. There are a lot of teenagers out there addicted to opiates thanks to prescription drugs.

I came of age in the late 70-80's and it was all over the place. You could not go into a bar or club and NOT find it. You wanted to get laid? Blow some girls nose. I watched more than a few people battle the "White Demon" and more than a few lose everything and yet some function at a relatively normal level. I will second the notion that back then it was a bit more acceptable and a "Glamour" and "Elite" drug. It was expensive at $100.00 a gram IIRC.
Its popularity waned as the dance/disco era faded away.
The crack epidemic of the late 80's and early 90's brought it all back. Crack is a purified form of cocaine hydrochlorate similar to what "freebase" was back in the day. Far more addictive than the powder form. Far more destructive as any episode of "Cops" will illustrate.
Now days I think meth is a more prevalent, cheaper problem. And ungodly destructive.

SOS's clubhouse near 36th and Pecos was torched, cars got grenaded and I went to a fatal motorcycle crash at I-70 and York where a Bandido was cruising down the highway, a SOS came up along side him and kicked the Bandits bike. SOSer flipped the bird as he rode away.
SOS has their roots in the Springs IIRC and was formed by 'Nam vets.
They have always had a strong presence in Colorado as have the Bandidos, Brothers Fast(now HA) and High Plains Drifters.

Phrasing a statement are good grammar. One day when you are bored wander down the block and chat with your local 1%er. The majority are very nice guys. Now after "chatting" with your neighbors, attend one of their functions. Only while in attendance, wear a t-shirt with one of these sayings.

See how "friendly' your neighbors are. They will either tell you to take the shirt off, and get the hell out NOW.

SOS was founded in Niwot actually. But I heard about that 36th and Pecos clubhouse incident... they had SOS on Gangland once. I've come face to face with a few SOS members, they're not guys to mess with- they're also the reason I refuse to join my friends when they go to the Grizzly Rose (that and I'm not a huge fan of the music there).

Anyway, back on topic here, I have friends that do coke, quite a bit actually. Then your the problem, not the Sons of Silence.

Respect begats Respect.
After 9 Harleys and running in scooter circles since I was 17 I have had more then a few encounters with patch holders of various clubs.
Never once had a beef with any of them and to this day I still have a few close friends who are patch holders.
Good people who will do anything for a bro.
But you get stupid around them and they are more than happy to accommodate you and anybody in your party.

I'm not saying I got into it with them, no, just been around the places they happened to be at- I tend to avoid trouble, and if I see a cut I know that's someone who has a lot of other guys backing him. If I see a 1%er patch, then I know that's someone who really doesn't need anyone to give him trouble (not a whole lot to lose)... I just chose to avoid confrontation with them, namely because I've been "[not so politely] asked to leave an establishment" based on the style of motorcycle I ride by an SOS member. I left, no questions, no argument, no discussion- not worth the trouble. I don't speculate they're good or bad, they just are. I don't have beef with them, so one would assume they shouldn't have beef with me (but God forbid you go to any place they hang around at riding the "wrong" type of motorcycle).

Television shows exaggerate and exploit all the time to boost ratings and shift public opinion.

As far as the gang situation in Denver, yes, there are a bunch of gangs here, but Denver does not have a serious gang problem like many other cities do. It probably has something to do with the lack of oxygen combined with potent MMJ.

As has been said it was very common in the later 70's and 80's. It was also much more upscale. For many it was a true "recreational" drug as it was something used at a party or other function.

I knew many that owned business back then and still do that never had any issue with it. unlike Speed or Meth it's affects were short lived and not nearly as strong when used in moderation. Like many things back then most grew out of it.

I had no idea Sons of Silence was a criminal gang.

Most of the SOS guys I see look like doughy middle aged guys with white collar jobs that spend a wad of cash on an over priced Harley and a lot of leather (hell, two guys in my neighborhood are SOS members and they're not criminals).

They all look like scruffy looking Rotarians or Kiwanis guys to me.

I dont think you are referenceing SOS properly or have some weekend warriors mixed up somehow.

SOS are serious business and they are young all the way to middle aged.

I knew a guy who never was an SOS but ran with them and was their "cook".

He did 6 years in Sterling and went straight and narrow when he got out (when I knew him) and
last I heard a Production Manager at a cement factory.

Alcohol destroys more live than all the other drugs combined...

I'm not sure the Mexicans would agree with that statement.

You ever been to a mexican bbq where the tequila and bud lights are flowing like a menstruating 18yr old ? Not a pretty sight, especially if you're the anglo dating the mother of the host, not pretty at all.

That sounds dangerous... I mean the tequila and beer. I dated a Mexican girl in my youth, the one thing I got annoyed hearing all the time "You wanna come to my sister's/cousin's/niece's Quinceañera?" And from my experience, it was Corona or Pacifico, not Bud Light... Those parties used to always get a little uncomfortable for me, considering I only know about 100 words in Spanish and never knew if they were talking good or bad about me.

I dated a Mexican girl in my youth... Your mean last summer right?

Those parties used to always get a little uncomfortable for me,...That is your own issue. I have been to "those" parties, as well as parties in the middle of nowhere in Colombia and still felt welcome.

I married a Mexican girl. The tequila & beers are flowing every weekend. I typically have only a beer or two, but MAN some of those parties can go through several bottles of tequila and a few cases of beer like nothing. Then someone disappears for a few minutes and comes back with more beer!

There is a coke presence up here. A couple of parents have told me that teens have offered their kids coke. Kinda makes sense, well off kids with access to money and little parent supervision.

It is my own issue... I just don't feel comfortable when the language being spoken is one that I do not know- I don't know what's being said, and I feel like I'm not contributing to the party/gathering when I'm unable to socialize... Why would you even bother posting anything about it? It's not like I said anything derogatory or inflammatory, just a statement of my own experience...[Eek3]
