View Full Version : Shot Peening A Stainless Finish
Howdy all,
I have a couple of polished stainless steel handguns that I want to flatten the finish on. Does anyone know of a gunsmith or custom shop that does shot peening or sandblasting on firearms?
TIA,
Tom

Robar does it. It's on their custom pricing sheet which you can download from http://www.robarguns.com/
BTW, I have two stainless Sigs, a P220ST and a P226ST, that I've had coated with NP3 and the finish is a nice satin grey which isn't shiny. Rather than just bead blasting it, you might want to consider having it refinished in NP3 - current price is $285.
Thanks for the info, SigsRule.
I went the stainless path to avoid having to apply a finish. Although, I will keep that in mind for another project in the works.

Most any gunsmithing shop should be able to grit blast it and make it look more low key.
Or try the yellow pages and look for sandblasting.
If you are near Colorado Springs give me a call.
Thanks Tom. I am about two hours from CO Springs.

Go to Tool King and get a $135 blast cabinet and use 60 or 80 grit aluminum oxide. Tape off the areas you don't want to refinish and plug any threaded holes. Start at around 25 PSI and practice on scrap until you get the finish you want. I routinely refinish my Sebenzas and have done the top strap on S&W revolvers. The PSI setting and the distance you hold the nozzle from the work determines how course the finish will be. Be advised that even stainless steel is suseptable to rust in the pores of course finishes.
Thanks Richard. Just another reason I need a sand blaster. :)
BTW, the Bushnell scope works great on the 10/22.

I got my small blast cabinet from Harbor Freight and have used it for countless things on cars and guns. I blasted my SIG P229's stainless
slide and it gave it a darker than normal grey (kind of like the Ruger Target
Grey they have on some guns) and it looks very nice and no more worry about holster wear.
