I know I've felt this way.

"BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KABC) -- Fed up with people speeding through his neighborhood, a Bakersfield dad took matters into his own hands.

He put up a sign in his front yard that reads, "Warning! You hit my kid, you will be shot!!"

Phillip and his wife, Danielle, love watching their kids play in the front yard, but they've had a few close calls with fast drivers. They are hoping this sign is enough to get people to slow down.

Police say the parents aren't breaking any laws with their sign, but they don't condone it either. They say anyone with safety concerns in their neighborhood should give them a call."

Sounds like he needs to petition the city (or whoever) to install some speed bumps in his neighborhood.

Maybe something like this...

I have had the police knock on my door for doing the same thing, only verbally. Was in the heat of the moment incident, and the police office was really cool about it. In his own words"Next time get it on tape and let us handle it." As far as I can see the one punk has never returned to my culd di sac.[Driver][PoPo]

Speed bumps are an easier sell south of the snow belt. The county refused to put them in here when we petitioned because they complicate plowing. However, they did say that we were free to use whatever - within reason - traffic slowing barriers necessary when the kids were out playing. Well placed signs, barricades, and cones can do wonders to slow the banshees down.

I've seen longish ramps used in snow belt states, but those seem to be very (high end) community or gated community related. HOA that do their own plowing might be more receptive to the speed bumps than the counties.

That's a misleading article title. I was expecting it be some ol' coffin dodger ranting about people driving 44 in a 35.

However, I don't think he'd be entirely justified if he shot someone, who ran over his kid. If someone popped over the curb, and mowed down baby-boy Billy in the yard, then by all means pump their car full of lead. But, if baby-boy Billy did a face-plant 2' in front of a car going the 30mph speed limit, the dad has much bigger issues to worry about.

I've seen a truck going 50 mph down my street before. I heard him floor it all the way from the stop sign at the top of my street. Our neighbor got the police, fire, some other politicians together at a neighborhood bbq to discuss neighborhood issues. I guess while they were doing that (we were out of town), that same truck barreled down the street and the two motorcycle cops jumped on their bikes and popped him.

Luckily I don't live in a spot where you can really haul ass, but I know if I saw that I would be setting up road spikes when I saw that vehicle coming!

F**k that. I wouldn't convict him.

This is a topic that drives me insane so I'll keep it short and sweet. A street wasn't a playground when I was growing up and still isn't. Parents are responsible for their children playing in the yard or park. I'm responsible for my car in the street . I don't condone speeding in residential neighborhoods but I also don't condone streets being used as playgrounds.

So it's not just the gun-hating residents of CA that are bat-shit crazy. Noted.

It's not about the street being a playground, it is about the close proximity of the street to residences. You don't need to be speeding down a street that essentially has an intersection (driveway) every few feet for example.

Roll a ball out in the street in front of a parked car when those assholes are speeding through.

I live on a street that people speed all the time. In three directions, there is only one block to the end of the street. One guy was able to get up to 52mph, according to PD, in a Grand Cherokee and T-bone a mustang right in front of my house. He then crushed through my 4ft cinder block wall into my yard. I got home before the ambulance was their and got the pleasure of holding his C-spine. He kept apologizing and was wondering whose house it was. I told him it was mine, and he turned white. I guess the thought of me making one little twist worried him.
I have seen dips put in the road to slow drivers. I wonder if those would be better for the snowplows. I bet with speed bumps, several of these little cars would get some air on my street.
