While scouting for elk today came across a dead moose. Is there a legal process to "harvest" the rack?

I would think it would be like hitting one with your car, except when you report it you say you found it dead allready.

Call the DOW, tell them what you found, they will come check it out, maybe meet the officer out there to answer any questions. As long as you didn't poach it, I would ask him about the rack and maybe if any meat is salvageable. I highly doubt you would be able to get it though.

The other thing to do would be to wait and let it sit, but you risk animals chewing on it etc.

Being that Moose are relatively small in numbers here, I would let DOW know and ask them first.

^^^^ This! But 9 out of 10 times, you get nothing but a Thanks for reporting it. Have a nice day! We'll take it from here!

It appears to be a fairly fresh kill. Back side has been worked over by the crows and spooked a pack of coyotes 50 yards up the trail so guessing by next week the rack may be all that's your salvageable.

Id call them now. Some asswipe probably shot it mistaking it for an elk. Maybe DOW can slap somebody.

Not sure what # to call. Tried CPW headquarters and the wildlife service center for the area. Recorded message and only open weekdays

call monday, or check what unit it is in, and call the forest service in the area and they can get you the DOW officer for the area.

did you mark in on GPS?

Will do Monday. And no. My buddy took his GPS out of his pack to make sure he replaced the batteries an forgot to repack it. But, it is easy to find at the end of a marked trail.
Thanks for the help and advice.

If the antlers are of "trophy" size, the DOW will not let you keep them.

We found a big mule deer dead along our driveway here at work just a couple months ago and reported it. It had a 7x7 in velvet rack, and they took the head. They did allow us to take any meat that we wanted.

Do the honorable thing...Call DOW.....Be honest....But prob. wont let you keep due to the fact it was probably a mistake shoot... they will keep it for evidence...let us know what happens....

The Division is pretty serious about tracking down unlicensed moose shootings. They'll pull DNA if any of it was taken before they got to it, in case it shows up in someone's house.

Talking with DOW the other day they said there have been 12 moose mistakenly killed this year. Pretty crazy mistaking a deer or elk for a moose.
