I have a friend who is here visiting from out of state, he brought a gun with him that he wants to give to me.
Would the proper way to do that be to go to an FFL and check it in, then 4473 it to me?

Well someone will answer it after you are insulted numerous times for not searching...just so you know. [ROFL1]

I will add that I did look around a bit and everything I saw said have them ship it from their FFL to Your FFL, I didn't see anything about if they were here in the state, gun in hand.

Exactly.
Find a quiet, dark corner. While whispering, your friend says "Here, take this" and you reply "Thanks, buddy".
Remember to whisper... the corn has ears.
FTF,no bill of sales,no problem ;)

Wow, the membership has turned soft tonight......[LOL]
By now you should have been ridiculed, insulted and worse.
The proper "legal" way is as you mentioned.
But what you do behind closed doors, or in dark alleys, is your business...........[ROFL1]

My father lives in the semi-communist state of Maryland. I gave him several of my guns in this manner. Flew to MD on vacation, went shooting with them, then took them to his local FFL to coordinate the transfer. They have a mess of waiting periods, background checks, and videos they have to watch before taking ownership of a handgun. If you want to do everything on the up-and-up, then what you described is exactly what you would do.

This sounds like a FTF gift, no need to get the gvmt involved IMHO unless of course your friend wants that done
The proper way to transfer a firearm from person to person in state between 2 adults who are not otherwise prohibited from owning a firearm is....
you both extend one hand and place the gun from one person to the other. Then you shake hands and leave. If there is money involved you trade that at the same time.

Maybe we can get a stick figure drawing together of the whole process [Tooth]

Or a youtube version shown in interpretive dance. That guy from The Big Lebowski needs a gig.

This has nothing to do with it. I just thought this was funny.

It is illegal to sell a handgun to a non-resident . . . but if a non resident gifts you a long arm in your state of residence and no cash changes hands I don't even think there is a rule regarding that.
don't ask don't tell? thought you were married[ROFL1]

We both want to do things LEGALLY so we'll be meeting up with our friendly local FFL. Thanks for all the responses.

Staying out of prison and shooting my new gun sounds way more fun than getting raped by bubba.

Whatever floats your boat, I guess. Where's the prison shower scene smilie?
JMHO, but I think you'd be fine. He brought it here, not you. If he wants to leave it here with you, I see no transfer issues. No cash, it's a gift. Only possible problem I could see is if it were stolen or had been used in a crime and was traceable to that crime.

Nothing in the world wrong with going through a FFL.
A clear conscience is not a bad thing.
