View Full Version : Putting a tap in a 55 gallon plastic drum?

Anyone know how? I'm considering two for water, and tapping them at the bottom seems convenient.

Should be able to get the taps at HD or Lowe's,use a hole saw for the proper size, And the tap should come with gaskets. [Beer]

I did one a while back where I got a spigot that had male pipe threads on it, and then just drilled a hole in the barrel a hair smaller than the threads. The spigot threaded right into the relatively soft plastic of the barrel, and never leaked a bit.

That said, there are spigots made specifically for the task:

put them on their side and use the bung? they sell bung adapters from any biodiesel place or farm supply but you need access to the inside of the drum.

cheap taps usually leak. I like ball valves especially with 55 gallons of pressure.

Check these out (http://www.mcmaster.com/#drum-taps/=jqikps). Looks like the taps at the bottom are FDA compliant if you care about that.

thanks, that article solved a problem for my oil filtration setup with siphoning the bottom layer.

bulkhead mount spigots are probably the sturdiest - flange and gasket on one side, proper sized hole, then gasket and nut on the other side. You can cheap it with an undersized hole and single gasket, trusting to the undersized hole to hold the spigot threads and provide enough torque to hold the gasket tight.

I did this and it worked perfectly.
