Hello all:

After years of lurking and shooting nothing bigger than my 22LR, I finally took the plunge and bought my first AR-15 this weekend:

http://i.imgur.com/IL1uy.jpg

I eventually want to build my own, but with zero familiarity with the platform, I figured it wise to buy a retail model so that I can get my education in. I bought a new Smith and Wesson M&P 15 Magpul MOE kit and a total of 7 magazines. I intend to get at least a few hundred rounds of range time in on iron sites before picking an optic - Appleseed style.

I just wanted to thank you all for your expertise and guidance, silently taken. I'm converted!

Once I learn to reload I hope to also get a 300 AAC blackout upper with a couple tax stamps... Once the budget recovers.

Any further advice for a long-lurking newbie? (Such as how to buy .223 at less than 50 cents a round)

Thanks!

Omni

.223 can be found at several places for less than $0.50 a round. PMC is my budget brand of choice and can often be found around 20-30 cents a round if you do some looking. Walmart carries American Eagle 62 gr for around 30 cents a round. It's often bought out though. Just keep an eye out and you can find cheap ammo.

Welcome to the S&W club, get ahold of me and we can find somewhere to sight in that S&W. After all, you got to know how to shoot that new AR to protect the "HOOD" as many member refer to Aurora as.........[Tooth]

If you want to split a Case (1K rounds of 5.56 62 gr. ) Let me know.

Congrats on the purchase!! The M&P 15's have a lot of great reviews and I like what smith did with the gas key on the BCG on the M&P 15, looks very secure and strong.

Cant wait to see some pics and range reports bro!

It's not the very newest M&P15 package. This has a separate trigger guard as opposed to the integrated one. I'm not sure what other differences there are. If I made a mistake in not buying the very latest SKU, please let know the error of my ways!

That's a Mamba sling I picked up from a surplus vendor on the cheap. I'm not convinced I like it yet. I will have to relocate the front swivel to the side of the hand guard before I will pass judgement. It comes dangerously close to interfering with the safety in its current configuration - but I do like how easily it transitions to a shooting aid with the sliding front piece. I can hold the rifle up using primarily my skeleton and it feels very natural.

I just Googled the Pueblo Tactical Rifle and was not disappointed (http://www.facebook.com/PuebloWestTacticalRifle). I can't believe I hadn't heard of this. Thanks.

If my puppy isn't ready to shoot, would you still recommend this event for general socializing? I *might* be able to get the wife to let me go, if I can get out of this Halloween party she wants me to attend.

Definately recommended. Hoser may let you zero before the match. Shoot him a PM. I'm heading down after work on Sunday morning. PM me if you want a ride.

For cheap ammo, one of the best deals around right now is this one:

http://sgammo.com/product/pmc/limited-1000-round-case-223-pmc-55-grain-fmj-ammo-2-cases-order-limit

PMC .223 for $0.32/round + shipping. Shipping from sgammo is cheap and fast since they're in Oklahoma.

They also have PRVI 55gr M193 for $0.33/rd.

the trading post usually has ammo and optics! and

Ah - do you mean the "SPF section?" :) All the goodies I want seem to be SPF by the time I get to them :(

And yes - I try to support local vendors whenever possible. I paid a few more bucks than strictly necessary on this M&P15 to support a local store - and to reward the guidance and labor they invested helping me choose.
