So we went up to squaw pass this weekend, and without divulging too much (gotta keep it hush)- the new range they have built up there is awesome! Plenty of stumps to shoot, fences blocking off the range so you can't bring your junker car up there to shoot (yes, this happened before). But problem we ran into on Sat... PEOPLE DON'T FREAKING CLEAN UP AFTER THEMSELVES! [Rant1]
This is why I'm not going to post up directions to the site (it's not 'the playground') because apparently people aren't responsible enough to pick up after themselves. We arrived with a trash can and two large black trash bags- we left with the trash can full, plus 1/2 of the first bag full of brass (for a friend who reloads) and the 2nd bag full of trash. There was a fiberglass bathtub up there that we couldn't fit in the bed of our truck.. I'm planning on probably going up again next weekend and I think I'm going to bring a sign to put up that just says "Please respect our public lands and clean up after yourself" and also grabbing the bath tub and disposing of it properly.

I give the Forest Service a big thumbs up for the great job they did, but it's still disappointing to see the bad stuff happen up there like it getting trashed.

thanks for cleaning up what you could. I still haven't been to this location yet.

It looked like someone brought a TV up there and shot it to death and left it too.

I still haven't been to this range and my in laws live a mile away. I am often there on the weekend and hear gunfire all day long . . . thousands of rounds, lots of mag dumps and bump fire. Last weekend I could've sworn someone was firing off a cannon. Frankly, I'm a bit nervous about what stupidity I might run into up there.

They need aggressive Park Rangers up there.

Up at Pawnee the Park Rangers cruise the area and actually stop in to check what are being used for targets and types of ammo being shot... they don't like steel core rounds... particularly Soviet surplus ammo.

I'm sure if the Park Rangers cruise Squaw Pass and other sites.. they'd make a $killing$ in all the fines they'll be issuing out.[Tooth]

.. but I guess that makes to much sense, right [Stooge]

The "cannon" like sound was the group next to ours shooting some stuff similar to tannerite. The guy said that he got it at Dicks for 9 bucks. He had two of them. They were pretty neat to see and hear but at $9 per shot thats pretty steep!

I'm glad to hear that. I thought it might've been something stupider going on up there. Didn't really sound like a BP cannon.

Was just up on Friday with a couple of other members, and we had a friendly visit from the Division of Parks and Wildlife stop by. I've never had that before, so I guess his saying they're under a lot of pressure to shut the site down was pretty serious. I always clean up, and after a few people leave their crap up there I sometimes come home with reusable target material (like this weekend, a homemade target stand that someone abandoned- last year it was a collection of bowling pins).

Something we were always taught in the Army, whether your using someone else's pisser, or their range; leave the site cleaner and nicer then you found it. I always practice this even if Im pissing in a 7-11 bathroom. If more people had this mindset, even a little bit, then our use of these public places would continue and the authorities would love us because we would make less work for them not more. Unfortunately young people these days are disrespectful, ignorant, and self centered.

I posted a thread earlier about potential sites out east, not too far past Aurora. I think I saw the map on here are the site off a pass by Evergreen. I keep hearing about South site; can someone PM me and educate me on these sites that are close to the metro area please. I need more range time on my H&K P30 and would rather just spend money on ammo.

Thanks in advance

This doesn't surprise me in the least. I was somewhat impressed with the grasslands up north, relatively clean, so I paid it forward and did the same. Like Jrk2262, leave it cleaner than you found it.
