A co-worker just got back from souh dakota today, he said the group of 20 that went limited out everyday. Sounds like a sh!t ton of fun. Good luck, although it doesn't sound like you'll need it.

I am going to North Dakota mid November for my first time and its on private land I can't wait! I'm tired of making my dog try to find pheasants that aren't where I hunt in Colorado or find one only to be a hen. She has an amazing nose so I am more excited for her to finally get on birds so hopefully there are still some pheasants and some decent weather! Good luck and let me know if you need someone to hunt with I have thurs through Saturday off every week :-)

I have gone in SW Kansas for years, and have loved it every time. The population varies, but with connections, we have pretty good access.
Have always wanted to try SD, but it will probably have to wait another year.
To the Colorado hunters, where do you recommend? I live in Longmont, and would love to find something closer where I can go more regularly.

So, no recommendations on region for good WIHA land? I understand, keeping stashes secret.

for quality pheasant hunting you need to get to far eastern CO unless you hunt at the places where they plant the birds....no thanks.

holyoke is the place to go in CO for pheasant IMO. but it gets POUNDED for the first couple weeks, and every weekend is typically covered as well with hunters.

Private land can be found, you have to meet the right people, put in the time and knock on a lot of doors. land ownership maps are what you want to find to go this.

has anyone ever done the Burlington Rotary Club Hunt that give you access to most of the private land around Burlington?

I have been to Burlington a few times, private land, including land adjacent to the Rotary Club. In my opinion Burlington is not very good. The group I go with has gone out a couple of other times out there and without a dog, i don't think they have ever bagged more than 4-6 birds a day for the WHOLE group. So maybe one bird a person per day at the best.

They say Goodland Kansas much better.

I have come to the conclusion that you cannot hunt birds without a dog, and expect any success. Much like a horse for Elk is crucial.

I should find out today for certain if we're going to SD next Friday. Private land, friend of a friend. Sadly, I'm filling in for another friend that passed away this year. 12 hour drive. Shoot, I don't even have a set of gators or field pants, off to Bass Pro I guess. He told me we'll easily see 100+ birds per day.

Went to Eastern Colorado this Saturday to do some pheasant hunting. We were out by Joes and Idalia. This is going to be a bad year for pheasant, and next year will probably be worse. The farmers out east bailed most of the CRP and walk in areas or let the cattle graze them. There isn't nearly as much cover for the birds and the hatch was not very good this year because of the dry conditions. Two years ago we saw hundreds of birds on opening day. This year we saw less than a hundred. Because the cover is so poor this year if we have a hard winter it is going to kill off a lot of the birds. My guess is that it will be several years before they can recover to great numbers again.

So far everything I have read and people I have talked to about pheasant populations in KS, NE and CO the populations aren't doing well due to (as someone said already) CRP was hayed and grazed due to the drought. The Feds made an emergency use of all the CRP to help save the cattle industry. I hunt KS in the southwest corner and it hasn't been good for a couple of years now. I have a GSP which helps, but use to hunt without a dog and would limit out just walking a lot. No more.

For CO look up the Golden Triangle in the northeast for the best pheasant in the state. It has pretty much collapsed this year.
Suggestions would be to find water (example: along the Platte, Republican or Arkansas) and find Walk-In access or SWA to hunt. Pheasants need water daily, food (corn, sunflowers, milo, wheat, etc) and heavy cover to roost in and in bad weather.

The CO DOW website has a very good video of pheasant hunting.

I went out eastern co near burlington for opening day. 4 of us got 11 birds. I limited as did my dad. The other two guys got a couple a piece. 2 good hunting dogs (my english setter and my buddies chocolate lab) and he had his new 6 month black lab.

The wind was ridiculous and caused a lot of missed shots. We should have all easily limited. Size of birds are definitely smaller than last year. The numbers are definitely down a lot this year. Cover is terrible. Plenty if food but not much water.

Ill post up pics later.

I'm headed east tonight to try to shoot some birds near Fleming. Our scout said that he saw more pheasants than he expected to on Friday, so hopefully we'll have a chance to shoot some. Don't expect to limit, but a couple sure would be nice.

Had a blast in North Dakota it was my first year hunting here and I would definitely come back.. It was supposedly horrible hunting to my buddy that comes a couple times a year but I had a blast.. Hunted 2 and a half days and shot our limit every day plus a couple grouse and I got a Hun that's getting mounted.. Cool little bird and a good story to it so I decided to get it mounted. We were going to hunt the morning but the pups foot is twice the size it should be. Got about an inch to inch and a half cactus/ thorn apple looking sticker in her foot.. Can't put much weight on it now and hunted a good 3 hours with it in her foot.. Man dogs really are mans best friend and man are they tough.. So yeah we have 2 more dogs with us but if my dog can't hunt I'm not hunting.. Just not the same.. Told my buddy he could go but I'm out tomorrow, and he understood.. I wish Colorado had as many pheasants as here.. I think I'm addicted now.. Definitely not cheap

Nice!

Wish we did as well. Friend's dog was in heat so they only brought the pup (Sugar) with zero experience.

Buddy lost one downed rooster thanks to the dog, his youngest son got a rooster and 2 hens, his oldest got a chuckar, I got one chuckar and a kill on a rooster I let the oldest claim. Sugar got better after retrieving a few and getting the scent. She actually did quite well considering.

Went again yesterday! I got 3 and my buddy claimed one that bullet got for him! He shot 3 times at a couple birds, they both flew a long ways off and landed in some CRP. We headed there, bullet got real birdy and started going quickly on his trail, next thing I know he sprints for second then jumps and punches! I thought he was after a rabbit, next thing i know a rooster starts to fly but is real low, bullet is right behind him, leaps and catches it in the air! He does a couple rolls and holds it down while my buddy ran over and grabbed it!

To be honest I think I have more fun watching the dogs work than actually hunting, well maybe not but you get what I mean. I have a 6 year old GSP that does the same, if its low enuff hes on them! Anyone up for a group pheasant hunt here in CO?

Great looking pointer Sniper. I imagine the little dog has a hard time in the CRP fields though.

We need to take a day trip out east.

yeah she only goes on a couple of the shorter walks! I have more fun watching her leap through the field trying to see where I am at! She does a good job keeping up though! Bullet does a great job, although he doesn't like to drink much water so I am always afraid he will get over-heated, but he hunts smart and doesn't run like a wild dog like my dads dog does.

Yeah we need to get out there some time, once we get a cold snap it will be time to go again. My dad and I went out today...NADA. saw 7 hens, not a single cockbird. wind was howling. ended up being kind of a miserable day.

Yeah man, hunting with dogs in this warm weather scares me. I use an old camel back that I throw in the back of my vest for the dog.

Yeah I carry a little collapsible bowl and a couple bottles of water in my vest. never had any problems luckily! Now I think Bullet got some of the seeds and weed crap in his ears so i need to get them cleaned out. Looking at how to do it or have to take him to the vet and let them do it.

12-03-2012, 21:45
My dog gets that crap as well. I finally got some ear wash from the vet. Whenever he would start shaking his head at night, I'd get it out and flush his ears with it. In accordance with what the vet said.

My lab is eight now. Kinda fat and out of shape. Much like me. I'd still like to get him out for a couple of hours this year.
