Was cutting some aluminum this morning and running out of air. Cutting and waiting for her to kick in. Didn't happen!
Come to find out, the 80 amp breaker fried. No one, I mean no one, in Loveland/Fort Collins has a 3 phase 80 amp breaker in stock!! WTF??
Looking at one by 10am tomorrow, Friday! [Bang]
So we are out of business right now! [Bang]
Guess what we are doing...........
Our big compressor seized a month ago. I couldn't get a replacement in for 2 weeks. Fortunately, a customer had a trailer mounted unit he loaned us to get by.
I feel for you. I didn't realize how many of our machines required air until we had none.
Is the breaker at the panel? Shut off the panel and tie it to the mains (naughty) you could stick a fused disconnect in there to protect the wire.
Or is the breaker in the machine? Put in fuses in it's place.
Our Compressors are our life blood, no air no production. We have two, one is a backup..I'd like to have another.

Be careful. Something caused that high amp draw. Replacing the breaker maybe be a very small piece of the puzzle.

Hell no. Hell fvcking no! That's about as wise as putting a socket in the fused disconnect.

It blew in the main panel. 3 yrs of throwing that breaker twice a day. I knew it would happen, just sucks. Need to use the box switch!

I have a friend hat works at an electric supply company in Denver. If you're interested I can call him and get prices and ask him to bring it to Brighton tonight. We can meet in Brighton. Pm me if you want.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS have a back up!!!! Keep few of these (http://imageplay.net/view/tya22289582/21137M) in your closet. [Beer]
we just had a 3 phase 120 hp motor go out on us last week. It melted the breaker contacts together and tripped a main upstream breaker. Sucks, have you ran inductance and resistance checks on the compressor motor? Might want to order 2 breakers if you haven't. Ours fried the new breaker during current load checks and we had to go get another one. It lasted about 3 trips and 20 minutes of run time before the long time delay over-currents fried.

Why dont you drive the 45 minutes to Greybar off Pecos and I-70 and get the breaker?

Call Grainger and drive the whole 1 hour to get it off Tejon and Alameda.

You're bad! [ROFL1]
Tin- does this mean you guys are doing more of that messing around that you seem to enjoy posting video of when you have some down time? Anyone here watch Duck Dynasty- those guys do about 40min of work in an 8 hour shift... must be nice... [LOL]

Glad to hear the issue is being solved in timely manner. [M2]

Grainger had nothing in stock in the state. We buy lots from them and normally have stuff.

Please god tell me that was Sarcasm!!
We have some fun. But we also work our asses off to make those fun videos!!

I was just comparing shenanigans, except they have a lot more time for hi-jinks (I've seen the website, you guys look pretty busy!) [Beer] No I wasn't saying that you guys don't work, just saying right about now it looks like it's time for some fun until you can get back up and running... if that happens do share video, that last one was awesome!

Be safe. There is a reason why it's tripping he breaker. Very rarely is it a "bad" breaker...

All good dude!
We have fun! But, if we had as much fun as I portrayed, we'd be outta business!! [ROFL1]

Isn't that the motto these days though- Work hard, play harder? At least that was the reason Fort Drum MPs hated us... we worked pretty hard, and well, play time, we tended to be noisy. [Coffee]

For future reference. When Grainger, Greybar and such are out if stock, we call local AG irrigation, pivot sprinkler guys. They seem to keep 3 phase equip in stock. Have saved our butts a few times on fuses.

They do get old and lose there capacity if they are used a lot. My last one I replaced (20A) was tripping at 13.4 of steady power.

They do get. Especially when ya throw um twice a day

Sounds like the thermal overload protection either was missing or sized incorrectly.
Guess what we are doing...........

It would be worth the money to get a magnetic starter with start/stop buttons on it with thermal protection.

I was gonna say Blazer Electric has them in stock every time we have needed them... then I realized they are only in Springs and Pueblo.

and it didn't dawn on you to call an electrician before now?

Did you call Graybar off Pecos and I-70, the first exit as you head west onto I-70 form I-25?????

I read that to mean they were using the breaker as a switch. But if it was tripping twice a day, then it needed attention. More than likely the breaker is sized to the FLA. If that's the case then it's probably tripping due to the inrush current of the motor starting. If it has thermal protection then the breaker can be sized up to 250% of FLA if it's a standard breaker type. (thermal magnetic circuit breaker). 175% if it has time delay fuses.

I think he means using it as an "on/off switch" on in the mornign.. off in the evening..
not blowing it twice a day.

OK, We will go with that. I probably mis-read the intention
Which is going to cost more, having a switch installed or replacing this breaker every so often?
