View Full Version : A funny Trading Post observation

Scenario: A member lists a firearm for $X and bumps it up a few times during the first week. The member lowers the price to a more reasonable price and bumps it up a few more times over the coming days. The member then describes how awesome the gun is or something similar and then threatens to "put it back in the safe" if it doesn't sell by whatever day.
I feel like I'm missing something. Is that supposed to entice me to buy the listed firearm? Maybe you should just lower the price if you want it sold.
I'm not calling anyone out, I've just noticed that gimmick is a popular one used in the Trading Post and find it funny.

Ah boo hoo, let 'em take their ball and go home.
Its probably gonna entice someone thinking that they can wait just one more time and they might drop the price.... Kinda like, " Act now before its too late!" or "Call with in the next 15 minutes for this once in a life time offer"
FINE, I'll put it back in the safe already [Rant1]
Pretty common practice. Try to get good money for your stuff, lower the price when you don't get any interest, then think about keeping it since you can't get what you want for it.
Doesn't bother me really. If there is something I want at a fair price I will try to buy it. If not, I just move on. If I'm selling something I list it high, then drop my price, and then threaten to pull the ad and keep it.

Although those sales post kinda gives me a smile once in a while, I think there MIGHT be a logic to it.
Perhaps, a seller found a firearm he/she loves on the shop/classified/ee. Seller wants to purchase the firearm without withdrawing a fresh fund to purchase the item seller wants (reason may vary depends on budget, wife, pay date, etc).
Then the seller lists a firearm to sell it within certain amount of time to open up a fund to buy whatever seller wanted/needed.
Maybe seller just got paid a hefty bonus , and he does not have to sell his/her firearm to buy whatever he/she wanted.

I agree with what Ray said above. It is an open market. If the price is within my price range, I will buy it; if it isn't, I may PM an offer. If they want to keep it, that is their prerogative.

Typically that's a sign of too many nibblers but no bite. I had listed few things in the past where it got no responses on the thread, but plenty of questions/offers by PM. Yes, nibblers include those who say give me few days to think about and so on. Hence that response -- just my .02 [Flower]

THINKING ABOUT.
POSTING IN any other forum under the guise of "slipping one past the mods" with the "Just seeing what my XXX could sell for", anyone have a price??
When a seller post something FS then bumps it within the next 1-2 hrs THEN a BTT shit, 5-6 BTT's before lunch. That Reeks of desperation.
Give it up and lower the $1400 parts kit AR for a sane $6-750.
Personally i could care less how much NEW you spent on all the magpul BCM, BSA, HODAKA, shit.
Reality check, once it's off the showroom floor it aint NEW. Granted 1K fired, is barely breaking in any firearm. Still a fired gun is a USED gun, same for the acc package.
AHHHHHHH feel better now........Ok maybe until breakfast. Unless Ronin just posted some work, barroom, encounter in the men's changing room rant.

I actually put something like that (I'm not trying to pay the mortgage, etc.) in my adds most of the time. The intent is to avoid the "Hey nice AI AW. I'll give you $700 and a really nice SKS for it." emails. It doesn't always work.

Hell, I can vividly recall the REALLY OLD Edison players that used the cylinder records that were shaped like an empty toilet paper cardboard tube but were just a little larger in size. Those and the old wind up Victrolas were "way back when" no electrical power was needed to operate em. No power outages to be concerned about when listening to that "music".[Coffee]

Yeah, I remember the gramophones. I can also remember a lot of the really OLD farts, who were "hard of hearing" used to put a little metal horn up to their ear so they could hear better. No batteries to wear down with those gadgets and they could be used as a little weapon to defend themselves.[ROFL1]

I've never owned a gramaphone, but I know who Nipper was? Alex should know this one. Here is a hint - His Master's Voice. [Flower]
Myself, I just got frustrated and pissed off. Spent more than I should have on a shotgun I thought would be perfect for me, did the transaction in 5 minutes with no BS, then decided once I got home that the weight, balance, and length of the buttstock were not that comfortable to me so I listed it at what I had into it. It wasn't so much the crickets chirping that got to me but some of the truly shitty offers I was getting (more on armslist than here).
One guy told me he wanted to buy this for 3-gun competition, but needed to "deduct the cost" of a new barrel and mag tube from my asking price.
A few guys offered me guns that were only worth a third (or less) of what my shotgun was worth with either no cash or 100 cash.
A couple of guys said "they'd take it" then I never heard from them again.
And then a few guys asked me if I would ship it out of state, for free, and accept PayPal as payment.
So yeah, it is a great shotgun and currently my only SHTF HD weapon, so I dropped the price in my ad by quite a bit and said I was considering holding onto it . . . whereupon someone told me I was playing the "I'll put this back in the safe game" so I lowered the price to my absolute bottom dollar and said if it doesn't sell by Tuesday it will be off the market for a while, because I'm getting paid next week and will probably be too busy for the next few weeks to meet anyone.

I believe Nipper was a little spotted dog whose picture was on most of the old RCA Victor record players. He was always looking into the big horn and listening to the music flowing out.
Alex is most likely aware of that too since he's "almost" as old as I am.[Tooth]

And there was a 25' tall Nipper listening to a gramaphone on top of a building as you entered Baltimore from the south on the BW Parkway. After many years Nipper was sold to the Maryland Historical Society Museum and once again sits atop a building north of the Inner Harbor for all to see: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/2872
