anyone know any cheap locksmiths around pueblo area. Racine's is about 1/2 mile from my house in Pueblo West. So I may ask him how much he would charge.
I lost the keys to a Yakima rack and its locked on the truck. So I need to unlock one of them to pull the core to get the numbers off of it so I can order new keys.

Just drill the core out. You can buy a single core for $11.70 and keys cost $3.60 a pop. I'd say that would be cheaper than calling a locksmith.

I had the exact same problem and that's what I did. Just take it slow and you'll be fine. Just drill for a bit... stop and insert a screwdriver and try to turn it. Just keep drilling a little at a time until you can turn it unlocked and pull her out!
what size drill bit did you use. 3/8 or so
I was thinkin about ripping one out with a slide hammer but drilling sounds like a better idea

I don't remember what drill bit I used exactly, but it was a little bigger than 3/8.
Don't rip it out! That will probably really mess up your locking mech. in the rack.

There's only a set number of keys for the Yakima locks. Aren't the numbers engraved on the face of the lock as you're looking at it? Granted my Yakima locks are all very old and I don't have one in front of me, but it seems they had the numbers clearly engraved and all you had to do was go to a Yakima dealer with the number and buy one new lock with the same numbers and you get the keys you need.
only the very old ones have the numbers on the front. They started putting them on the side of the cores. I will see what I can do this weekend.
I just took some racks off of my suv, don't need it any more.
If I can remember, I'll look tonight/this weekend and if they're what you need, you can have 'em.
if you don't see me update this thread in a day or two, send me an IM and tell me to get off my butt! :D
Any 8 lb sledge should get that rack off... Or a well placed 12 gauge round. Live a little. Could be fun.
Remember:
There is no problem too big nor too small that can't be solved by an application of high explosive!

How about going to the nearest Yakima dealer and explaining your problem. I'll bet they have a key in stock that would fit or a master (the one that comes with a lock set to install the locks into the racks). I had a situation where I needed some additional locks but I wanted to match the keys for the ones I already had. I had the number so they just had to look through their inventory but there were only about four or five boxes they had to go through to find a match.

If the Yakima dealer there knows what he's doing, that's the best idea. They are correct in that there are a very limited number of keys for those racks. However, it may be more than they stock. Anyway.... if you don't really want to use a local locksmith for whatever reason, and you're in the Springs, I can get it off for you and get you the number from it. If I wasn't all packed up right now, I could have even made a kay. Karl.
ok, the pair of racks I have are the roof top channel types with the clamp that holds the down tube, made by Yakima
if you need them for the locks (I have keys) they're your's.... but you have to come get them at my house or work.

OK, road trip. You head to 7's place to pick up your spare parts, you slide by my place so we can take off the old one. My fee is more than fair, a Domino's deep dish and 2 liter bottle of Pepsi. [Dinner] [Pepsi]Karl. [Muaha]
I just want the racks off. I am upgrading to a permanant mounted basket soon. I was goin to sell the rack only reason why i was interested in keys. I think im goin to do my original plan and cut the bastards off and live and learn
or I may stop by Divide here they are the yakima dealer in pueblo and see what they have.
A friend has a master core key. But they have to be unlocked for the master to work. These are locked.
oh, ok.
I took the locks off the racks last night and was going to offer them to you. but if you're not going to reuse the racks.. I'll find something else to do with 'em.
well, in lieu of a suitable amount of explosives, a sawsall or plasma cutter will do the job too :D
Yea I appreciate the offer but yea I just want them off. Its basket time
