Working off the cell phone for a bit. Why the Fu*k do people feel the need to create viruses for computers?? Got one yesterday afternoon, spent most of the day down loading, scanning, purging, etc.[Rant1][Bang] Thanks to my brother I can atleast get the damn thing to powerup, so I can run the needed scans.

A few tips to remain problem-free moving forward...
Make sure XP is up to date.
Do not EVER use Internet Explorer. Chrome is your best bet but Firefox and Opera are also options. Run Chrome and there are a few extensions that will help you remain problem free. Adblock, FlashControl and WOT (Web of Trust) are three good examples.
Uninstall Norton and install Microsfot Security Essentials. MSE is free for Windows users and is EASILY the least resource hungry and best AV on the market.
Lastly, if you get lots of email forwards... pictures, jokes and the like... stop! That's the single largest causation of problems. Doesn't matter if you know who sent it or not they likely are infected before forwarding it and don't even know themselves.
Do those things and you will be amazed at how few problems you have moving forward.

You probably had more than the one. Just the one you knew about. The scary ones are the ones that DON'T affect your PC but log your keystrokes and personal information. The ones that you never know about are the most dangerous.

I like Avast anti-virus myself.
But all the viruses I've ever seen, come from the same acquaintance who seems to have to forward every stupid M&^%%$#@ email she gets. With every trojan/malware/virus

Avast is soooo 2006 [Tooth]
I used to love it as well as AVG but trust me when I say that MSE is better in just about every way so long as you're running a registered copy of Windows.

I can probably fix it but I'm way up NW of Loveland so it wouldn't be worth the drive for you especially since it would take two trips. Shipping it probably would be cost prohibitive as well. Check to see if you can just do a factory restore of the OS and start fresh.

Best way to to take care of it is to wipe everything if you have the discs that came with it you can wipe it or call up the manufacturer and get new boot discs so you can wipe it. best way to get rid of any virus but it will delete everything on your computer.

Use it for target practice and go over to the Apple store and pick up a Mac Book Air. You will never have to worry about this crap again.

Really people still believe Macs cant get viruses?? i will say its harder to get a viruses on a Mac because there's not as many as for Widows but they are out there.
I think someone works at geek street right over by my house Dave..
In all honesty.. get a new comp.. windows xp.. pfft..
Probably running a p3 aren't yoU!

That's so cute.. Apple fanboys believe they are oblivious..
Wasn't there someone who figured out how to hack into the battery on apple laptops and melt them basically?
Kade.. can you chime in since I know you've been using apple FOREVER!

TRUE Mac Viri are so rare that they are basically a non issue.
this year there was a bad one that was hid itself as a flash update ( I hate flash!!!) that got around pretty well but Apple has fixed the hole it used and Adobe beefed up it's side too..
I personally run a wide open network ( no firewall at all) and have NEVER had an issue. I have static IP's and run servers as well as my personal machines have been this way for over 10 years now( got my first statics in 2000 had those till 2009 and have a new block I've been running for the last 3 years when I switched ISP's)
My office tho not on statics runs no Firewall and no AV all Mac's never had an issue. I thought the boss had gotten the flash virus on his machine but it turned out just to be a setting he changed and screwed his machine up for a bit till I found out what he had done.
So in short.. do Mac Viri exist? Yes. Are they a problem? Not that I have seen.
The Battery hack required you to enter your password in OSX to even try and get started. as do 99% of all mac viri. Your in more danger of the Li-Ion batteries going bad (Can happen to any Li-ion Cell) and exploding on their own then you are getting the virus that can hack the battery firmware and cause the problem.

this is normally where I would point to the evidence of os- virii, butI think we will let the ignorant relish the bliss.
at least we know your boss didn't have a flash virus on his iPhone...

Go ahead and point it out ..
I'll still counter with over a dozen machines, no firewalls no anti virus software
ZERO PROBLEMS
I still stand by my statement that yes they exist.. but are quite rare.

I have two PC’s and one mac on my desk for development. The PC’s have firewalls and anti-virus software up the wazoo. The mac stands bare naked for the last 3 years and has never had a problem. The Windows PC's with all the protection only have a rare hiccup. But it's amazing how the Mac runs fast and free.

I had an old Mac growing up and it caused me to hate Apple products for a long time. Then I noticed that I had to get a new laptop every 2 or 3 years because they started to run slow or refused to start. Finally my younger girlfriend got me to switch back to a Mac and it runs great. Never had a virus issue and dont even think about them. I am sure that they exist somewhere but not that I have found. Apple products also hold their value better. If you don't believe me then go try and sell your 4 year old non-apple laptop on CL and see what you can get.

Holy shit this thread went to shit after I left. Is this the part where I number every single Microsoft device I've used that's been clean as a whistle and submit it as some sort of proof that MS devices can't get a virus? I also buy my machines on the cheap and sell them for not much less... some times more. Who gives a shit? None of this affects the OP or the topic he started so go start your own debate thread. For fuck's sake.
