Modular safe

I was wondering if anyone has any experence with a Modular Safe. That is, the kind you assemble when you get it.

Zanotti (sp?) has made one for a decade or two that generally gets decent reviews. As in, better than nothing, better than a low end cabinet, better than some entry level safes. I have an internet friend who has had one for a few years and really likes it. Says it's rock solid when fully assembled. He also said the six pieces are pretty heavy; he's moved a couple of times, and I think they were all a two-man lift type of thing. Having said the above, he has never experienced a break-in or fire, and I imagine anyone who pays close to $2k for a safe is going to be pretty positive about it.

Thanks for the input guys. I violated the first rule and bought a safe to hold what I had and not what i was going to get. Need to expand but it's tricky getting one down where i need . Thought one of the modular ones might work. We'll see.

I bought a SnapSafe.

I didn't want a modular safe, but the location I needed to put another safe in left me without any other options.

I could carry the pieces to the assembly location without any help. Assembly was straight-forward and took approximately 45 minutes. I believe I could have completed assembly in about half that time if I wasn't busy inspecting every nook and cranny of it as I put it together. The craftsmanship is impressive.

I broke one of the shelves while putting it together. It was a tight fit and I hammer-fisted it a few times to get it into position which caused the carpeted particle board to snap in half. SnapSafe sent out a replacement shelf free of charge the same day that I called them.

For some reason, it sounds like a cow is being forcibly raped when I turn the wheel and retract the bolts to open it. I'm not sure why this is. I'm going to see if some graphite addresses the issue.

I know that this safe isn't going to deter a determined individual that has a a sledge, a pry bar, and an hour or two on their hands. Thankfully, that scenario is almost impossible for the location that the safe is in. The fire rating will work fine for a city location where response times are relatively low.

As I said, I did not want a modular safe. However, I am very, very pleased with the SnapSafe.

One other piece of advice for when you do order - Whatever the safe says it will hold, cut that amount in half if you're planning on putting long guns with optics on them inside.. I was able to fit 7 in the 12 gun model and it was tight.

A locksmith and safe guy that I respect on another gun forum recommends Zanotti frequently. He's quick to point out they're not as good a solid safe, but they're the best option for anyone that NEEDS a modular safe (tough location, frequent moves, etc.).

They were my first choice, but an 11 month wait time was a bit of a deal-breaker.
