Yankee Doodle Lake - rumor was that there is a locomotive at the bottom. (I'm thinking of exploring a SCUBA dive here sometime in the future)

NICE pics.
I see the lakes are full.

I think I know which switch-back you stopped on, to take the last pic.
I go there to watch the sun set sometimes.
You "could" have waved as you went by. ;):D

I think the locomotive rumor is false - I have read some reports of people SCUBA diving in their and trying to find and they were unable to. It is true that a locomotive fell off near there but it was supposedly on land and removed. But who knows. Looks like a nice trip. A good hike from the roadblock is to go to the top and you can see winter park and the whole other range from there.

yeah it's a nice trip. the roughest part of the trip is about the first mile from the main road. There was a little bit of snow up there. Snow on the road was limited to a small amount on some of the northern sections of the road. Weather yesterday was awesome.. no high winds up there like there was down here.

I remember being able to to the whole thing way back when.. It's (was) one of my more favorite places.

last time I was up there I did hike up to the top. I was up there with my dad and daughter.

sad that they've got the whole thing blocked off on this side. that's why I want to go up the other side next time.

an old familly friend (since passed on) used to work the railroad back in the day. Forest Crossen. He's written a whole series of books relating to the the area and history. My dad has signed copies of all his books.

west of Rollinsville on Tolland Rd.

road (Rollins Pass Road) up to the lakes shown in just east of the Eastern Portal of the Moffat Tunnel

the turn off of Tolland Road to Rollins Pass road is here:

Looks like a fun ride, I've been up around Switzerland trail/Rollinsville/Kingston Peak a couple times but never went that far West.

Man, I think my XR250R has probably disowned me at this point... didn't get 'er out at all this year. [Eek3]

There is no train in the lake, never was.....

Many years back, a young woman decided to commit suicide by driving herself and a friend into the lake. The rescue dive team ended up using sonar to find the car, they covered the lake and found no train. The guy that heads up (or use to) Larimer CO S&R told me this - Poppa Bear - I think Whitmore - but I'm not sure about his last name. He was search director for that lost kid that got eaten by the Mtn. Lion up the Poudre. He did a survival class for Mile Hi Jeep Cl. a few years ago and talked about it.
I also remember that the lake has been drained at one point, not sure why or when. It's a land use memory thing.......
