View Full Version : SKS or AK?
So I'm new to the idea of AK's and wondering if to start out with I should go with an AK or an SKS.
I've heard pro's and con's of both and just looking to get some input from those with some knowledge on the matter.
What're pro's/cons of an SKS?
What're the pro's/con's of an AK?
Looking for the 7.62x39 if that helps.
To me, since these days the SKS is barely less expensive than an AK, I would go AK. You could get a 7.62 Saiga for about $400, which will be similar to the SKS as is, and can be "converted" to full AK configuration.
I don't have one of these yet, but Centerfire has VEPR rifles for $500 right now. These are supposed to be much nicer than your standard AK, and again can be converted to full AK style down the road if you wish.
If I could get and SKS for $200 I would, but I never see them for that cheap anymore.
All the cool kids run ak's .
There's no advantage to an sks. And as already said the price is very close.
Well shit, if the cool kids are doing AK's I'd best get an SKS....maybe even an airsoft SKS....
AK all the way besides you can never have enough so just buy one of each to start and go from there...

Ak.
Sks is milled and used to be cheaper. Other than that, what advantages does the sks have?

You can buttstroke an opponent w/out the stock breaking off on you. The sks bayonet also doubles as a mono/bi-pob when in the prone position.
Get the AK. There's a reason its the most prolific firearm of all time.
I really like my Russian sks. The Chinese para troopers are cool too with the 16" barrels. AK'S are great too. Can't go wrong either way.
What are you going to use it for?
Shoot cans...
Shoot deer...
Shoot paper...
Shoot whatever...
It can make a big difference.
I have a 5 shot SKS (the original mag was shortened) that I hunt with.
An SKS w/a fiber=optic front and a rear peep is a neat thing.
An AK w/a red=dot on the fore=end will really shoot. The one that I shot...I was able to hit everything that I pointed it at.
I plan to plink with it mostly. Don't want to go overboard on one on the off chance I dislike it. Not looking to hunt, just shoot targets. And hopefully some zombies soon.

I regret getting rid of my Norinco Sporter. Took Ak mags. Ate anything I would feed it. If you do get an sks, get one that takes ak mags. Don't mess with the tapco stuff. I would say that my old Sporter was just as reliable as any of the AK's I have owned.

What ever you decide on, get it before next tuesday the latest. Any $5-599 AK is gone off store shelves as i type. Who knows what inventory is in transit to the noco dealers, however come tuesday night/wed morn. You will either be kicking yourself, or happy to know the $500 ones will be available for some time.
Jensens had a chicom sks for $300 monday afternoon.

AK. I have both.
I saw a list of benefits the Kalashnikov had over the Siminov design some yrs back online and though I can't recall them, they were many.

I have several AKs and honestly you can't go wrong with them. IMHO it is one of the best weapons your average joe can own. CHEAP ammo so you can actuaily afford to shoot/train with it, plus they dont cause BS and they are easy to use. BUT...I've shot several SKS and everytime I do I'm amazed at how wel they point, they just seem "right" to me for some reason. I stil haven't bought one yet, but there is jsut something about them that I love. They are like a low-capacity smoother AK.

The Semi-Auto Enfield of com block rifles. Hone your stripper clip skills and you've become a very formidable opponent.
Well, went with the AK and picked up a Romanian AK, M10.
Now to get it to the range and play!

Hi Varmiteer, this looks like a cool project. Did you leave the barrel at 22" when you did this or cut it down to 16"?

That not mine, have to wait to pick up my SKS. That's the stock manufacturers site.

Sorry 00tec, I had assumed you already had done it, between that and calling you Varmiteer, I guess I am a noob.
I like the product and am thinking about getting one as I have an SKS and want a Bullpup. Appreciate the link [Beer]
