View Full Version : AR 308 roll call "The biggest loser!"
Since the 308 platform AR has its own sibling thread curious about something from other AR308 owners.
Weight.....
One of the things going into building my 308AR was I wanted something I could carry without feeling like I had a heavy monkey on my back. So I stuck with 16" barrel and bare minimum additions.
With my setup and a loaded 20rd mag of 150gr FMJ I weight in at;
11 lbs 14oz

That is a good looking rifle, would you mind sharing the build details? I have been thinking I need a 308 AR pattern lately (per the other post in this section), but I have not ruled out building something....
I'd like to get mine to weigh in around 18 pounds if I can. I hate recoil. [Coffee]

Thanks! [Beer]
I didnt really build it, at the time I didn't have any 308 tools and pricing out parts separate, it was more expensive than buying a complete upper. Didn't like any of the DPMS uppers out there and have been hearing good things about CMMG's new MK3 line. Only place I could find a complete upper was from Cheaper than Dirt, now it is $50 less than I paid, oh well.
It is a CMMG upper; 16" stainless barrel 1:10 twist with 10" MOD 0 free float Hand-guard and MK3 Bolt group (whatever the hell that means.) The lower I got off of Buds as a complete lower with carbine stock. Changed out or added a few things to complete my zombie hunter and apparently inspire some others!
This makes me want to build a 308 carbine. I wish I had a money tree.

The only .308 battle rifle I have ever owned that didn't feel like a ton of bricks was the SCAR 17S. Only 8 lbs and very little felt recoil. The AR-10's feel ridiculously heavy in comparison, even though they're only a couple of pounds more.

I haven't weighed it yet. The better half does not allow scales in the haus. I think it is a phobia of some kind. I'll probably sneak one in the haus here soon. I am very curious.
I was thinking about taking it on an Elk hunt by suggestion a friend of mine had... Then he told be how much hiking he did last time he went on a hunt.

8lbs? With or without a loaded mag? Curious I should weight mine without a mag to see how much that actually adds.

15 lbs 3 oz empty. :-D

Yeah a little heavy, specially if you are going to lug it around hiking in the woods-a-hunting. [Flower]
I just weighed mine without a mag and not much difference, 10lbs 6oz
Still a little heavy, but better than I had expected.

That is pretty good with all the extra stuff and the longer barrel that you have. I am only under 2 lbs lighter!

Weight is my biggest gripe about my AR10. But when you put .308 and semi-auto in the same sentence you start at 8.5 Lbs at the lightest and go up from there depending on add ons. And this applies not only to the AR10 but to the PTR-91, FAL and M1As I have owned in the past.
right now my AR10-T carbine is 9.5 Lbs with iron sights and empty. Using the Armalite steel magazines you add about 2 Lbs for a fully loaded 20 rounder. Then add optics, now you are up to 13 Lbs fully loaded. These rifles get heavy fast.
Other than weight, I love my AR10.

I weighed mine without a mag and it was not very much difference at all. Steel mags and MAGPUL LR20's are not that much difference in weight? I am please I got mine under 13lb and it reached its goal as the medium ground semi auto carbine I can use for many things.

According to the factory information, mine weighs 7.98 lbs. empty.......
I replaced the stock to an Ace AFRX and a MIAD grip and a USMC sling, so I will say it is just over 8lbs. empty.
AR10 (B model) weights 8 lb. 10 oz. with no mag. It is a carbine with an A2 stock and Midwest industries BUIS sights. Armalite 20 round mag with 20 rounds 7.62 NATO weights 1 lb. 9 oz. Total weight adds up to 10 lb 3 oz.
The above weighted 7 lb 14.4 oz with an A4 collapsible stock with no mag.

hopefully not having to lug it anywhere far.... just need to let the lead do the travelling :-D
I want to build a second upper for it once parts become more common than unobtanium. I gotta get a better camera or maybe invest in some real photography.
