View Full Version : So who has built a PSL?
The brain is grinding away as I need a new project and I am thinking of buying one of these:

Is it worth a shot as my first build or just stick with a standard AK?

I'd suggest something else for a first build. I don't know if anybody is making barrels for these yet and last I heard the barrels were all sold. This is an Apex kit on a PSL barrel from Centerfire systems. If you can't get a PSL barrel you'd have a lot of work adapting something else, maybe a Mosin Nagant.
Here's an Apex kit with a Centerfire barrel. I had to use an oversized barrel pin. I couldn't belive it when I fit the barrel but the original hole in the trunnion was slanted.

Hmmm good point as I am just starting to look into this. Sounds like build a standard AK or buy a PSL.

PSL barrels are being manufactured by a company in Arizona (PREXIS).
If you join up on www.weaponsguild.com (http://www.weaponsguild.com) you will see the info about them.

I'd like a modernized PSL, but with a stronger barrel. Are the ones Prexis builds as thin as the factory barrel?

I have not read all the discussion on the Weapons Guild forum, but I think these were being run in several different options, to include length.
It is a good forum for info exchange on firearms!

It wouldn't take alot to reprofile a mosin barrel, the breech face is actually very similar.
Steve where did you get that stock set? Lol
Wasn't Green Mountain or Arms of America producing barrels for these??

That's a squareback NDS receiver so the regular stock wouldn' work. I found an AK Fiberforce stock cheap somewhere and got front handguards from TGI. The stock took fitting but worked. I'll probably put something nicer on one day.

I recently got my hands on a great psl barrel and will be buying one of apex's psl kits shortly. It will be a great winter project.
So the 10000 dollar question it seems is where you bought the barrel...?

I saw one that sold on eBay and contacted the seller. He happened have one more and sold it to me for the price he sold the one on eBay. Seemed like a decent price. Barrel appears near new.

A PSL does have great potential for improvement. Replacing that long skinny barrel with something shorter and heavier seems like a good idea. Maybe an RPK GB and FSB could be used.
It will take some serious machine work. Here's a few threads:
The great A-Kamanator did one:

Here's another.

There are probably a lot of original barrels stashed away since they just vanished quickly. You could keep checking the boards and see if one turns up.

Yea Steve,Kamanator did a sweet job on that.I got to check it out a bit when I was back in NY when he had it at one of the shows, increddible!!
I also like the way he did his hbar moisin nagant as well!!

Check this out: http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=124471 Skip to post #50 for the porn shot.
Here's a decent priced kit, only downfall would be hunting up a barrel for it.

If I remember correctly Green Mountain use to make barrels for them.So I'm sure their out there, just have to search and hope their not outrageously priced.
Wow! Good information guys. I am going to have to consider this build again.
Always have to have a couple of projects ready to go.
