Decided to test it out and see how it works got 7 pints of pork and beans. Figured that'd be cheap enough if I screwed up no big loss. Still boiling in the jar and they all went ping. Way easier than I was expecting.

What size did you get? How soon are you going to eat one to test it out?

I got a 23qt presto was $80 on amazon with free shipping.
I'll probably pop one in a few days.
Oh, that's big. You're talking a pressure cooker, and not just a water bath right?
Hopefully he is talking about a pressure canner. When canning meat you have to use a pressure canner. I can several of my own soups now. I have split pea, navy bean, chicken tortilla, and jambalaya all sitting on the shelf now. Congrats Nick on getting started with canning. If you have any questions this forum is a great place to get info. I have only been canning for a few years now but I am hooked and can all kinds of stuff now.

Yup pressure canner. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000BYCFU/
I figured I leave the weight off and it'll double as a water bath, if I ever do jams or something. Figured off the bat I'd mostly be doing "meal in a jar" type of stuff though.
the 23qt really isn't all that large it's tall for sure but the foot print isn't that bad it'll do 7 quarts, or I think up to 20 pints if you double stack them. Heats up pretty quick too.
Ohh and walmart had their own branded jars that are almost half the cost of the kerr or ball.
Bravo! The more that know this art the better! Looks awesome!
I personal preference, once they pop and cool I never store with the rings on the lids. They could potentially mask the contents of a jar going bad.
I have that same canner, Ohh and FYI, when It says not to use an outdoor burner type... It means DON'T use a turkey fryer burner. Yeah that was disastrous for me.

+1 I'll take all I can get and save them.
Maybe we should have a canning recipe thread?
BTW what happens if you use a outdoor burner? Saw that warning and was wondering how it'd differ from a gas stove.
$80 seems like a pretty good deal. You'll have to tell us how it holds up.

I am all for a canning recipe thread.
Basically it makes the aluminum which what the OP and me have for a pressure canner become malleable enough that the inside pressure makes it look like a round pot instead of a cylindrical pot like it comes.
It ends up screwing up the seal, the flat bottom(which becomes round), and all your stuff you are canning inside.
Now you have to buy a new $80 Canner :-( I wish I had pictures before I took it to the scrapyard (which gives you less per pound aluminum scrap than used cans) but I was too depressed at the time.
I have a gas stove, does this mean I can't use a pressure cooker on it?

I threw away the directions in true man-style... but I believe the canner has a maximum BTU rating. I use my canner on my home gas stove just fine. I just ran into problems when I decided that my turkey fryer burner would boil faster.
I was trying to cut corners and trying to make the process faster, but in canning I learned that cutting corners = bad results.

The limit on the presto is 12,000 btu on gas stoves according to the manual. The videos on their web page shows it being used on a gas stove so I'm sure its fine.
You can always fork out the cash for a All American, but they run about $250+
My mom has a pressure cooker to give to me, but it is pretty small, only 10 quarts I think. I think it is the minimum to be able to can anything.

You should be able to get quart jars in it if it is tall enough, if it is the 16 quart one you'll be able to get 7 quarts/10-ish pints in it. The larger 23 qt ones you can get an extra row of pint jars in it with an extra bottom rack.
