The power just came on after being off in my neighborhood for about an hour. When it first went out, I waited about 5 minutes to see if it was coming right back on, and then went out to the garage to crank up the "small" generator. It provided us with some lighting and powered the entertainment center, just in time to watch, "Doomsday Prepper Bug Out" on NGCHD.
Had it stayed out for longer, I would have cranked up the "big" generator to get the fridge and microwave going as well, as I like to enjoy a cold beer and popcorn with my prepper shows.

So you used gasoline to watch that?

No, methane from the pig poop on my urban farm. Of course, gasoline! It got us through the outage in style, as I didn't see any of my neighbor's enjoying themselves! What should I have done, just sit there with a candle listening to my hand crank radio?!

my dad has his house hooked up to batteries and a generator to recharge the batteries, the generator is hooked up to a propane tank that is 500+ gallons. He looks forward to the power going out.
Not questioning your use of the generator, just your choice in television programs.[Beer]

Sorry about that. Gas fumes make me edgy. It is fun to watch the extreme side though. I'm more of a survive a natural disaster guy. Maybe a week at the most. After that I'd have to "rough it".

Can't argue with you there, but it is fun to watch the extreme side. I'm more of a survive a natural disaster guy. Maybe a week at the most. After that I'd have to "rough it".

Honestly, Doomsday preppers (the families portrayed) are a little extreme... but being preppers, we can all probably take something out of each episode. I know I got a couple ideas, and I am thankful. There are worse programs out there to watch and rot your brain with.

Dangit. I was hoping you were going to have to start packing up your BOV to outrun a mini hoard of liberal looters.
Ah well, better luck next time. :D

Well, I did learn that I need to make up a small "generator prep kit" with things like a chemlight, latex gloves, spark plug wrench, bulb syringe, etc.
[Awesom]
When the SHTF, I am coming over to your place. Not to pillage or take stuff from you and not to have you feed and protect me. And darn sure not to watch those prepper shows on your generator-powered television. Mostly just to drink beer and watch you run around starting and fueling your generators, deploying your weapons, and whatever else it is you do. Heck, if I film it you might get your own prepper show.

[Awesom]That's actually pretty useful info. :)

Must not be a Honda.
Spare plug and gapper with the gap written down. Spare pull handle and cord.

Really? Does a Honda generator illuminate itself, operate on gas that doesn't stink, and never need the spark plug changed?! I guess for 10x the cost of mine it should..

I want to see the looks on your neighbors faces when the whole area is dark, and you're drinkin beer and watching TV with lights on while they stand in the street with an old flashlight they took a half hour to dig out.... Good work!
i actually don't mind just having the power off, period. the only thing i would turn on a generator for would be the fridge, one light and maybe if i had sewage or water pumps tied to electricity. its kinda nice when its quiet.

[ROFL2]This is the visual I got too. "Kim and Tom" across the street staring at your house from their dark living room, candles in hand, frowning in jealousy.

This brings a question to mind. Obviously you would not be doing this^ if the S actually did HTF. What are your plans to prevent your well-prepared house from becoming a "shoot here" sign?

Just out of curiosity, what's the purpose of filling the tub and sinks with water?
Just out of curiosity, what's the purpose of filling the tub and sinks with water? If power goes out, water and gas are likely to follow. Best to get yourself some stores of water while you can.
Or, he wanted to take a bath, and do all the dishes by hand. :)

Keep in mind, folks in the Northeast are still struggling with clean water few weeks after sandy. While plenty of bottled water are being distributed, those who's lacking access to clean water for 'hygiene' and other reasons are risking running into many health issue. Flu season is here, pile of garbage are still unattended, more people in smaller area for those who are in the shelter can increase chances of diseases. Hygiene is part of survival to fight off sickness, and water plays extreme important part of it.

That makes sense. Or you could do what the english did during the black plague, make lots of beer and drink heavily to survive... LOL

I'm reading One Second After right now and the hygiene and disease prevention issue is heavily highlighted in the first half of the book. This is not something I was really ever worried about, but with little HoneyBadger due in March, I'm definitely concerned now.
