has anyone actually gone in and gotten a free meal from any of these establishments?

I wouldnt ever do it. I would feel guilty about getting anything for free.

This is where it's useful to have my VFW card in my wallet instead of in a drawer in my desk. It's usually taken as proof of service if you don't have military ID anymore.
I still have an old ID, but it's the laminated kind, and in that pic I had hair, so no one would believe it was me!

The wife and I went to Applebee's last year for this. Two hour wait and there were a whole lot of WWII and Korea vets there. We didn't stay, but it was nice to see all these old guys with hats or pins, or some other military regalia on.

Yes, but never again. I'd rather pay and not wait two hours, or feel like a mooch.

A friend of mine and I had discussed spending Veteran's Day together and possibly going to Applebee's either Sun night or Monday, but TR's sounds way better. I'd be happy to allow businesses the opportunity to thank us Veterans for our service- but I'll probably insist that I pay or just tip more generously than usual (which is usually about 20-30%). [Beer]

An old CSM once told me, "Some advice, never turn down a free meal, a free beer, a chance to get some shut eye, or a handshake from an older vet."

Chit chat is a bit lacking- it's as if you're trying to communicate with another culture, and you don't speak "Like, Valley Girl" or whatever the hell they call it now. [Tooth]

Was at one down in Dallas, where the girl working the bar on day shift was actually really good, knowing a ton about a lot of subjects.
That should be mandatory training for girls who work behind the bars: learn a bit real quick about lots of jobs people have. You'll make MUCH better tips.
