Gun ownership, carrying a gun linked to heavy alcohol use

Large, multi-state study shows certain gun owners more likely to drink excessively

June 14, 2011
(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) —

"Gun owners who carry concealed weapons or have confronted another person with a gun are more than twice as likely to drink heavily as people who do not own guns, according to a study by UC Davis researchers. Binge drinking, chronic heavy alcohol use, and drinking and driving were all more common among gun owners generally than among non-owners, even after adjusting for factors such as age, sex, race, and state of residence. But alcohol abuse was most common among firearm owners who participated in gun-related behaviors that carry a risk of violence, which also included having a loaded, unlocked firearm in the home and driving or riding in a vehicle with a loaded firearm."

That's just because lawful gun owners have jobs and can pay for their own alchohol.
They also have a conscience so they must drink to distract them from the BS that occurs in the world every day

Looks like CA needs to start hiring their LE's from England. What would they be called in Friso, Knobbies?

"Or have confronted another person with a gun." Might as well have just conducted the study on "Gun owners who conceal carry, or are habitual alcohol offenders."

Biased, costly, useless studies linked to living in California.

Biased, costly, useless studies linked to living in California.

Kind of sets a theme to explain why California is often on the verge of bankruptcy.
Perhaps they should be more particular on how they spend their budgets.

I understand that UofCA has lots of revenues from lots of kids who want to get into UofCA, but this study is stupid. They should just allocate their $$$ on Molecular Cellular Science like they did in the past.

I was born in Cali. Own guns and have a ccw and drink maybe only a handfull of times each year (less than 5). This is the dumbest thing I have ever read, I bet they just made it up!

I remember looking at it and thinking "of course, California"
There was a plethora of Kommiefornia comments on the thread as well.

the great crash nay have wiped the thread out though as I cannot seem to locate it.

I grew up 8 miles from Davis in a little farm town, but went to Davis a lot for the night life, even lived there a few years. That town is packed anti's that binge drink and drink heavily. As a matter of fact most of the chronic heavy drinkers I know don't have guns because the pawned or otherwise sold them. But what can you expect from a town that spent millions on a tunnel so foods could cross I-80 without being squished? BTW that tunnel got so hot in summer that it fried any frogs that went in it. To bad they have a top notch vet school, and bio-engineering department there, but a cutlass of whack jobs. Oh the stories I could tell!

Based on the authors stated day job, I think it's quite likely that the research was steered to support a hypothesis by someone opposed to wider acceptance in CA of carry laws.

I am a 5th generation Colorado native , family first settled here in the 1860s on what is the Monument hill area. We have many law men , city officials and others who are noted doing some good things as Colorado came to be. As a result we have a lot of pride about our heritage in this great state and how ancestors helped shape the front range. But sadly I see this State being overrun by people from left leaning states like California. Sadly they bring their political beliefs and impose them on the state. Nonsense like this report is taken very seriousily by good chunk of our residents. Sadly I believe we will see gun laws like those implemented in California or worse sadly in the next 10 years. The only time I left this State for an extended time was for the Military and a couple years in College (football). In about 5 years i may retire from my first career. Based upon what I am seeing around here I am really thinking of packing up and getting some land in Wyoming, Idaho, or Montana. I was planning for this in Colorado, but I am really worried about the direction the State is taking politically. I pray in 5 years that things will look up around here, but i may have to be like those ancestors of mine and go elsewhere. Either way fellow members thanks for the interesting posts.

If I had to live in California again, I'd probably drink a lot more too...

This is called a Type III error; drawing a conclusion where no real correlation exists. Junk science.

I should apparently start drinking heavily.
