View Full Version : Optics suggestions for my AR-10 build
So, trying to decide on an optic for my .308 but the choices are overwhelming. Ideally, I would like something with some sort of BDC reticle. Not really looking to break the bank on this one either. A buddy recommended the Bushnell Elite Tactical in a fixed 10x as being a good budget choice.
Anyone else have any advice, opinions, or suggestions?
Thanks.
ACOG makes a .308 BDC.. how far out are you looking to reach?

The SWFA SS fixed 10x is very nice for the money. mine wears a Leupold VX IV ? I think in 6.5-24x with the varmint hunters reticle. If I had to do it over I'd probably either go the SWFA route or save a few extra dollars and get a NF (but that's breaking the bank as far as I'm concerned).

The ACOG might be a bit out of my budget for now. Not looking to shoot past 500 yards or so. But I do have access to a nice 1000 yard range so you never know.

SWFA 10x is a great scope. They also have 6x, 12x, 16x & 20x fixed as well as a side focus 10x. $300 & $400(SF). All available in Mil or Moa. I have one and your welcome to check it out.
The SWFA SS 3-9x40 has been rock solid on my Sig716. It's the older Mil/Mil reticle, not sure what they have for BDC offerings.
The BDC isn't a deal breaker. Just thought it might be nice. I'll definitely check out the SWFA scopes.
I have been looking around for ideas also. Like the NF stuff and the ACOG's, but they are pricy and I am not sure I want to drop that kind of money right now.
I have been spending some time looking Burris. They seem to have some good options. They XTR line is made in the U.S. and the MTAC looks to be the same, but made over seas.
I have a Burris Fullfield II 3-9 on my hunting rifle and have been happy with it, so I may try something from the XTR or MTAC line on my AR.
Hard to make a recommendation without knowing how large a target you want to hit at 500 yards, but assuming you're talking about a silhouette target, the scope below is a good choice for a bargain priced scope.
The reviews have been good, though I have no first hand experience.

Ideally, hitting a ten inch plate would probably make me happy. I do think I want something with more than 4x magnification.
Thanks for the reccomendation. [Beer]

SWFA fixed power as someone has mentioned. I had a millet trs-1, decent scope for $300. Clicks are decent, glass is usuable, and tracked good. Take a look at a Vortex Viper HS or PST too.
I think the best bang for the buck lies in the MTAC line from Burris. Colorado Company, supports the shooting sports, lifetime warranty...
I have 6 of them and my .308 wears the 3.5-10. They have excellent glass, 30mm tubes and very functional reticles. http://www.burrisoptics.com/mtac.html

Absolutely you can hit a 10" plate with 4X. I'm generally a fan of high magnification unless you also want to use it up close and at high speed. If you're only interested in long range, go with higher power. The Millett TRS-1 mentioned by another is a good budget choice. If you want to be able to acquire targets quickly at short range, better not go above 2X on the bottom, and 1.5 X is better.
What Ray you didn't like my Burris Ar-536????
It was perfect out to the 500 meter mark.................... [Flower]

Thanks, Tim. This rifle is strictly a range toy and will mostly be used from 200 to 500 meters. Acquiring targets quickly or at close range is of no concern to me. There's no way in hell I would lug this heavy thing around when the zombies come. I have other rifles that are better suited for SHTF type scenarios. [Awesom]

Get one of the 1-6x scopes or 1.5 to 6x. Great for close up and still able to reach out for a longer shot. You are going to be limited with a fixed 10x
Thanks everyone. I picked up a SWFA SS 10x42 for now. Just need to get some sort of mount or rings for it. [Awesom]

They're no badgers, but they're stout.

That could be a bit more solid than a couple of your setups were. [ROFL1]
(On a side note, did you get moved yet?)

I'm late to the party, sorry. I've got a US Optics 1.8-10 on my DPMS LR308B, and love it. Heavy beast. If you want to take it for a spin, just let me know.

Yeah that has been my luck with optics on the virgin runs huh? Now I have a complex with them........................... [ROFL1]
(On the other side note, not until end of the month, we take possession of said new living facility on the 27th. We have time to transfer stuff. Doubt I will sell and close before beginning of next month. )
