Walther PPS

I have been considering the PPS in 9mm for carry and was wondering if anyone here has feedback. I carry the USP 45 compact now and I'm looking for something thin and light. I have big hands and like that you can get an 8 rd mag for the PPS so my pinky isn't swinging in the wind.

My EDC is a Walther PPS and I love it. I also have 7 and 8 round mags for it and definitely like the 8 rounders better.

Its light and thin like you mentioned and is very comfortable.

Thanks Spleify! I'm glad to hear you like it. I looked at a Kahr P9 today too and it was okay. I liked the trigger on the PPS better. The only Kahr I've fired jammed like crazy. Maybe they are built better now but I'm leery. They did not have the M&P Shield in stock which was the other one I wanted to fondle. I really liked the PPS though so thanks for the reply. Looking forward to getting access to the trading post again...

I dont have any knowledge of the Shield but I've heard they are real nice too. I have hundreds and hundreds of rounds through my PPS with absolutely no issues at all

The only experience I've had with the PPS is from a friend who loves it who let me shoot his. I liked everything about it except the trigger pull seems extremely light for a DAO pistol. I either want a safety or a heavier trigger on an EDC weapon.

I really like the trigger on my Kahr P9. Yes, it's long and heavy but very smooth and even. As for the Kahr jamming, can you elaborate? The only thing I don't like about it is if you rack the slide on a mag it jams up a lot. I complained to Kahr thinking it was just MY gun but they said because of the size and design, you have to only use the slide release. They all do it. Racking the slide is evidentally NOT recommended. Other than that I believe the Kahr P9 is top notch.

Now my friend with the PPS as his EDC is an FFL and he's watching the XDS and the M&P Sheild go through his hands to customers and his mouth is watering. He's thinking of giving one of those a try.

That Kahr I shot was back in 2006. I don't recall what model it was. I can't really elaborate other than the thing would fire a few times and then jam. It could have been a maintenance issue I suppose. I preferred the PPS anyway and the feedback I have been reading has been quite positive. I also like that 8 rd mag to extend the grip a little more. I'm on the hunt...Thanks again for the replies!

I have all 3 of these, the PPS, Shield, and XDs so if you have any specific questions let me know.

My quick take on them.

XDs: I am a big XD fan, love the the guns and own several. Love the XDs grip and feel, fits my hand very well. Very manageable for a 45. You've only got 5 + 1 so you need to make them count. Probably the best "feeling" gun of the group. However, it is a "finicky" gun for many. I don't completely trust it as a carry gun (which it is intended to be) It's been pretty reliable for me but I have had a few hiccups and it is difficult to reliably manualy chamber a round. If you needed to use it in a SD roll and you had a jam your probably done. Others have reported no problems but it is the least reliable of the 3 in my opinion.

PPS: Another gun I love the grip on. (really like the textured grips). This gun has been 100% flawless for me with the exception of my first backstrap would not lock properly. Walther sent me a new one and it has worked fine, The down side of this design is that it snaps into place and is not pinned. If it does come loose the gun will not fire. One other small complaint for me are the mag release is not what I am used to but it is very functional. My wife actually prefers it but when you have 8 pistols with thumb release and one without it just something you have to be aware of. Magazines seem a little more difficult to load by hand then the others. Feels like sharper edges on them. Just a minor complaint.

Shield: Not a big fan of the shield grips. A little too rounded for me and the gun doesn't feel as secure in my hand as the other 2. I did add a Hogue handall jr and it seems to help. Gun has been flawless and probably the best trigger of the 3. It's also the cheapest of the 3. That's about all I can say about it, can't fault it in any way.

I carry the PPS and researched the optimum concealed carry weapon for a "normal" person. This weapon is awesome . I would stay with the later versions as they seem to function better. I have tracked the market on these and now is a great time buy. I would stick with 9mm.

I have a PPS in 9mm and carry it when I'm tired of lugging my 1911 around or just want to change it up. It carries very nice in a Crossbreed holster and feels great in my hand.

I'm looking to get the SA XDs soon. I'm a big fan of .45 and usually carry a 1911.

Funny you mentioned the XDS, I'm really considering this one because I have two other guns in 45 and nothing in 9mm.

Shoot the XDs before you guy one. Make sure its right for ya. I was lucky enough to shoot one that my buddy had and I'm glad I shot it before I went out and bought one. They feel awesome in your hand but they are not great to shoot. The grip on it is really sharp, and trust me I dont have soft sensitive hands, and it was really uncomfortable to shoot.

I ended up buying an XDs a few weeks ago. I was also warned about the palm slapper it can be. I had no issues with it. Quite controllable for such a small and light pistol. Even w/ my Winchester Ranger SD loads. I shot several hundred rounds through it w/o issue and my hands didn't get too abused. I also had my Officers 1911 and shot it too. I really didn't think about it until after I was done and thought to myself, "the XDs was supposed to be a bit rough to handle but I it felt great." It was also extremely accurate for it's size. Hell, it was accurate regardless of it's size. I think it's a winner. I just need to order a decent holster for it. It actually fit rather well in my King Tuk IWB 1911 holster. I carried it one day in it and decided to just get a proper holster for it.

I'm much happier with it than my PPS and I like my PPS quite a bit.

I considered getting rid of my PPS and picking up a different sub-compact. I thought about it and realized how great of a weapon the PPS is. It is a very small, and I never had a problem with it, even shooting cheap junk ammo that was givin to me. The only downside I dont like, is the poly frame makes it tend to snap/roll so that .65432 second to get back on target just bothers me. I put a jr grip on it, and it worked amazing.

I had one for EDC and never really 'clicked' with it from an accurancy perspective (not blaming the gun, me and the gun as a team). And I also did not end up liking the mag release (small annoyance though). I changed over to the XDm .45 3.8 and the PPS is now m wife's EDC. She like sit much better than I did.

My current carry is the HK USPc in 45 so I'm optimistic that the XDS will not be a huge difference to me. I prefer the 45 and just didn't realize there was this option until a few days ago. I think the XDS with the extended mag could be the ticket for me.

Both of mine came with a seven rounder and an eight rounder. First one was ordered around Novemberish 2011 and the second one was ordered June 2012. Fuckin thieves.

I had one in .40 and sold it. It carried well (light, slim) but in .40 it was a bit snappy for me. I think it would be much better in 9mm but I haven't had any personal experience with it.

Edit: I also hated the back-strap "Safety" on the PPS. If you remove the backs-strap the gun is rendered useless. Once you fit the gun to your hand with the proper grip, you could fix that with some epoxy.
