I am looking at getting a 20 gauge pump shotgun for the kids to use. I would have to be steel shot compatable. I am looking at a JC Higgins M21, w/a poly choke (the price winner at $175, and not sure if that is bottom dollar), a Mossberg w/a factory camo paint job, the shortest bbl (i'm thinking that is a good thing for a good for a kid), and a 870. The 870 and Mossberg both have screw in chokes and are at about $250.

I'm thinking that I've read that the polychoke was not really all that adjustable, as the pattern on some settings suffered...dat tru?

Would the PC work w/steel shot?

How durable are the Mossbergs?

The wife has a 20ga Mossy youth, steel receiver, hold up just fine

You will never have an issue with a Mossberg or 870 holding up to abuse.

I perfer Mossbergs. They are tried and true and I like the tang safety location.

Layup, these 2 are the way to go. Only real choice, or difference is the location of the safety.

Both the 500 and 870 are great guns. Are either of the kids left handed? If so, you might want to look at an Ithaca 37 or the Remington model 17. It is a bottom eject shotgun that makes it a pleasure for right or left handers to shoot.
