COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A teen gunman on a rampage shot a carload of teens in the middle of a busy street Monday afternoon, killing one and injuring two others, before taking his own life. The shooting occurred at about 1 p.m. near Airport Road and Murray Boulevard in Colorado Springs.Colorado Springs police said the teenage gunman was in a Chevrolet Suburban and chasing several teenagers who were in a smaller SUV. The teenagers in the smaller vehicle were on the phone with 911 dispatcher, saying that a driver with a shotgun was after them, and they were heading to the Colorado Springs police Sand Creek Subdivision.
Near the residential intersection, the gunman rammed the victims' SUV and forced the driver to stop, police said.He then got out and opened fire into the smaller SUV, police said. One teenage boy was killed instantly and the other boy was critically injured.A girl in the car ran into a nearby field and the gunman chased after her and beat her with a shotgun, police said.A motorcycle officer, responding to a "rolling disturbance" arrived at the scene, and other witnesses who were driving by started gathering nearby to yell at the gunman to stop beating the girl. The gunman then shot and killed himself, police said. The two surviving victims were taken to Memorial Hospital. The teenage girl has minor injuries and the other victim has life-threatening injuries, police said.Police said the teenage gunman was carrying at least two weapons. Witnesses told the Colorado Springs Gazette that he was dressed in black and acted "off the hook."Police in the Springs tell 7NEWS they don't think this is gang related but do say it appears the victims, thought to be between 15 to 18 years old, and the gunman knew each other."We believe there was some type of pre-existing relationship between a passenger in the Chevy and someone in the SUV," said Lt. Skip Arms. The victims are high school students but their names are being withheld.Roads in that area are closed for the police investigation.
