While I’m feeling nostalgic I thought I’d post this video for those that haven’t seen it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c9OvL_8ESw

No idea what that A-10 went through…… I remember about 13 years ago they played Fiddlers and a Firefighter died saving someone from a flood and they made a donation to the family. No idea why that just came back to me.

Wow, I have no idea who that is. :) Kind of looks like Dio but it's not him. I'm guessing we listened to different 80's metal.

Depends on how you look at it. I'd say Poison is as much metal as Iron Maiden.

And I'd bet my AR10 that I've spent more time listening to Judas Priest, Maiden, Dio and Ozzy than anyone else here. :) Of course there's no way to prove it but I'd still bet on me.

Notice I didn't say Black Sabbath, they were a bit before my time.

Now if Venom was your thing we're coming from compeletly different angles.

I don't know about that man. My first cassette tape was Bark at the moon. I was stabbed at the Dio sacred heart tour and I just replaced my Iron Maiden Somewhere Back in time CD.

I grew up on Slayer, Metallica, Lamb of God and the like. Never really got into Hair Metal or glam rock. I do love Steel Panther though.

I beg to differ on that one. I don't think Poison would have ever had Accept be the warmup act. Besides, Maiden had Eddie...

Poison was not "Metal", they were more along the "Glam/Hair" Genre like Twisted Sister.

Motorhead, Megadeath, Pantera, Iron Maiden, Death, Meshuggah.
Now that's metal.

80's metal? They had metal music those days? [Stooge]

Sorry sorry... when I think of the 80's I got Black Sabbath in my head for some reason

Poison wasn't what I would call "metal". If you thought they were you probably thought Winger was too.

If there wasn't a mosh pit at the concert it probably wasn't metal. [Awesom]

Pantera was a glam rock band.

And then went on to produce some of the best metal ever made. Slow down with the misleading generalizations.

It's true, And this comes from someone who has seen them multiple times and has smoked a hog leg at the end of Vinny Paul's driveway in Texas with two hot blondes in a camero when I was 17.

Poison? Pantera? Really?

I guess my 80s Metal experience was much different from y'all's.

It involved guys like Yngwie Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, Jason Becker and an odd little record company called "Shrapnel Records"

I always thought metal was pretty loosely defined. It seems to include bands from Pantera and Iron Maiden to Tool and Deftones. It damn sure isn't anything like Poison or Bon Jovi.

I struggle with the necessity of labeling sub-genres at all. Ever looked at the list of genres available in iTunes to label your music? Death Metal, Speed Metal, Prog-rock, Indy, Alternative. . . It's still rock and roll to me.

You all forget Anthrax and Megadeth.. But we used to call Metallica 'metal' back then as well.

Poison != real Metal.

Trash metal (Vektor), black metal (Immortal), grind metal (Cephalic Carnage), doom metal (The Sword), melodic death metal (Older Opeth), experimental (Dream Theater and such), fantasy metal (Dragon Force), etc, etc. Metal is ridiculous. Ridiculously awesome that is.

Jammin to Black Sabbath Vol 4 at this time! Preceded by the Dead's American Beauty and Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow.
This afternoon I think Robin Trower is on tap followed up by the Who.[Muaha]

I need a semi 308....

There was good music that came out of the 80's? Hmmm, news to me. [Coffee]

Tooth-n-Nail records, anyone? The Shrapnel label had some very cool stuff.

I used to listen to a few artists from Tooth & Nail. I've been on a melodeath and metalcore kick lately.

Pantera was a glam rock band.

For their first album, I would agree. "Metal Magic" is about as glam as you can get. But when Cowboys from Hell dropped they were definitely real metal.

Man Testament is where it's at. I found them about 20 years after they had become a band and baffled that I never knew they existed.

Metal has so many sub-genres you just barely scratched the surface... I love me some Viking Metal (also fits into doom metal) like Amon Amarth, and I actually like it, but there's a lot of Symphonic Metal (Nightwish) that's pretty good.

As far as the 80's go, I agree with the sentiment that some of the "lighter" stuff shouldn't be classified as metal. I grew up listening to Dio, Motley Crue (I guess metal), Def Leopard, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Sabbath, Pantera, and 80's Metallica.

LOL, here I am drinking again (at least it has been 2 days) and I figured this thread would have died after 4 posts. I still say hair metal was "metal" and it brought a lot of the other bands into the forefront not to mention the WOMEN. Now that's why we all like metal wasn't it, I know that's why I moved to Hollywood in 87', unfortunately (maybe not) they were too easy so there wasn't much reason to practice. I'm just glad that many people here remember the 80's; I've had Sirius set on 39 for the last 5 years... it's not that I can't let go of the past, there's just so much shitty music these days.

Now before I go comment on the new metal thread I'll leave you with this, if you liked any 80's metal you should see this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cO4ZNO24Ye4
