View Full Version : Best 7.62 NATO system?
I'm looking into either doing separate upper/lower combo, or full rifle- I want a 7.62x51 chambered rifle for both long range (talking 18" or 20/22" barrel) and hunting. I've looked into POF (as I have a POF in 5.56 currently) and looked at Daniel Defense but they only make 6.8, which I hear for muzzle velocity and max effective range doesn't really compare well with the 7.62 NATO cartridge (or am I wrong on this?)... I looked at the LaRue PredatAR 18", that looks pretty nice as well. Any more? Should I do a full rifle or do a separate lower/upper combination?

G3 platform such as HK91, PTR91 etc.
This thread is so pure of win. We can stop the forum at this point.
Build your own based on a Mega Arms upper and lower and a Rainier Arms ultra match barrel.

M1A can be a bitch to mount optics on and issues with their gas systems can cause accuracy problems.
Scar-17 and LaRue OBR are terrific 7.62 systems.
Care to elaborate on the gas system issues. I have an M1A and it shoots just fine and is very accurate. I would say tension on the front band of the stock is more crucial than the gas system. Also, how is the gas system any different than the SCAR? Aren't they both piston systems?
Tension on my front band sometimes causes gas system issues. No SCARs because I vent my gas from the appropriate area. Sometimes my IBS makes me feel like I need a piston system.

Shims going bad, gas block coming loose etc. There was a very enlightening article in the April, 2010 issue of SWAT Mag called "Slaying the Sacred Cow". After reading it and finding similar issues with my M1A, I sold it.
They are both piston systems, but that is really where the similarities end.
Save a ton of money and get/build a FAL "right arm of the free world" - DSA or IMBEL receiver (stay away from Century of course) - millions used by NATO troops before we pulled them over to M16/M4s.

I have both and they are great but I like the older designs especially the M1A. I saw HK91 magazines at the last show for $10 which is 3x what they were selling for 6 weeks ago but that is still much less expensive than a $35 AR 556 magazine.
If I were starting from scratch I'd get an AR 308 using the DPMS magazine pattern. The SCAR is an excellent rifle but magazines are prohibitively expensive and I'm not sure about spare parts.
Additionally - 556 is currently priced the same as 308.
If you are going 7.62 NATO why bother with another AR? Get the original.. The FAL.. 90 countries agree.
It's most recent success.. Libya.

My LWRC REPR with 20" heavy barrel shoots great and before the whole PMAG craziness I was getting 20rnd mags for $18 that worked great.

Since I am biased but by the wants you state then a G3 or M1 since your are looking at LR accuracy only it looks like. All in all it seems like what you want is a 700 bolt rifle since ergonomics and all other things important to the rest of us...... Well ya get the point. You might want to break it down a little more. Just a thought. [Flower]
