With all the crap going on in the Gaza Strip and Obama's lead from behind stance I can see a World War by the end of the year. You just wait, the Mayans were right.

Honestly, I'm not really that concerned about it all anymore. The world is dead set on going to hell in a hand basket. I'm just ready for the fat lady to sing already. Either that, or "world peace" to actually take root... that would be preferable, but that's not going to happen.

Doubt it. No country can afford it right now. Except for maybe China and that's just bad business

"Turkey and Iran, Muslim countries that both have good relations with Hamas, condemned Israel."

Iran jumps in and Israel nukes them, it's all over.

I don't drink can i swap for appetizers instead?

Only way anything worldwide to happen is if America sat on it's ass rattling it's saber's. That would show china it could take a short cruise and take Taiwan. That would be 2 strikes against us which may or may not lead to someone thinking they could waltz on to our shores. OR give a signal to islamist already here to light off a few explosions, just to get our attention.

I'm afraid Jim could be very right with this... How many times will our "leaders" sit idly by while these threats continue to challenge us? I recall it was the official position of this nation at one point, I guess no longer, that we stand behind Israel... Now they're saying that the Egyptian President will be visiting Gaza- guess we know who he supports, and we already know who supports him- I'll give you 3 guesses, but you're really only going to need one.

WWIII probably won't take place until after our Commander in Chief has downsized our military to the point where our country is totally vulnerable to foreign attacks. And I don't think he'll have that accomplished in the next several weeks. It will probably take him at least a year or two.

Do you realize how much downsizing that would require? The US spends 4 times more on defense than the next biggest spender in the world. The US spends over twice as much on defense as China, Russia, France and the UK combined.

The USA can end any war or destroy any nation of its choosing with the push of a button. The only reason we haven't used all viable options in the Middle East up to this point is because of the collateral damage that we would cause to our allies and the civilian casualties involved. If al Qaeda were to set off bombs here on the home land and we could tie it back to Iran or Pakistan all bets are off and collateral damage quickly becomes an unfortunate and unavoidable reality of war that the US and its allies must accept.

Do you really think China or Russia would attempt to invade the US knowing that doing so would result in Armageddon?

Oh shit! Do we have a 3rd Token Liberal on here!?

Obama has already reduced our nuclear arsenal with the last 4 years, God only knows how much more he'll reduce our numbers over the next 4.

And what about those who don't care- like Jihadis? They don't care if they live or die, in fact, if they die fighting the "evil infidels" they'll go to paradise... Pakistan is toeing the line and could turn even more pro-jihadi than they are now, Egypt is now run by either Muslim Brotherhood or sympathizers of the MB, and Iran, well we all know about Iran. Obama wanted to reduce our nuclear arsenal, he did so successfully so far.

The notes they hold on the US aren't worth the paper they are printed on if there is no population that is willing to repay the debt.

When you owe China as much as we do China doesn't own you, you own China.

Most people don't have any clue how much of our telecom network in this country is built with equipment from China, that could have some very nasty surprises hidden in it. They can cause a LOT of damage all over the world without ever leaving their keyboards. Lots of info out there if you Google around for it. http://www.itnews.com.au/News/318234,us-issues-new-warning-on-huawei-zte.aspx http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9197019/Update_Report_sounds_alarm_on_China_s_rerouting_of _U.S._Internet_traffic

We also promise our services to nearly 100 other countries around the world, who DON'T have to spend money on a military because of it.

I had to address this... you do realize that we have the most technologically and monetarily demanding fighting force the world has ever seen right? That doesn't come cheap. Do you know how much it costs to train 1 regular soldier these days? For your average infantry soldier- that is 17 weeks of OSUT, it costs almost $300,000 if you factor in pay, medical benefits, life insurance, food, housing, paying the instructors, equipment, facilities. Then that number jumps up to over $700,000/year for a deployed soldier (all the same including what it costs broken down per soldier on a base for the operations). It costs around $500,000/year per soldier (average) for garrison. Now, if you average that out to say $550,000, times 1.4million currently serving in active duty alone, you get $770 billion just for troop costs alone, that doesn't include maintaining equipment, acquisition of new equipment as needed, supplies, construction of new facilities, travel, training, and excess pay. So we may spend the most on our military, but I'm a firm believer, seeing first hand our capabilities, you do get what you pay for. I suggest looking at some other countries (like AUS or CZH), then ask why we spend so much on our defense budget.

How many nukes do we need to make you happy? I read some of that Rand corp game theory during the years of the Evil Empire. (I mean the USSR, not the Democrats who are creating their own empire.) Their calculation for required nukes was beyond overkill. For all enemies, real or potential, every military base, decent sized city, airport of any size, dam, power plant and crossing of two roads or railways got a nuke. More serious ones got multiples. I'm sure there were other things that were targeted that I've forgotten. It took a lot of money to keep that many nukes functioning. I think we have a bit more than 5000 now, down from a high of 32,000. There was negotiation with Russia to take it down to 1500 or so but I think that's on permanent hold.

The USA has been blessed by location. We have big oceans between us and them. The Canadians are harmless. The southern border needs some intelligent help now as northern Mexico collapses into a failed narco state merging with the southern US. I think we waste way much or our resources in goatfucker counties while more important stuff close to home is ignored.

While they're not right next to each other, they're still pretty close (but to be fair, all places in Israel are close to each other).

meh, we had so many to make sure that even if they got 80% we could still flatten them. Necessary part of MAD.

As for how many we need now? MAD still applies but the risk is much much Much lower. Cannot get rid of them all because we cannot guarantee they they did the same.

Actually, from what I read, we got rid of I think about 400 in the most recent drawdown, but I heard Russia only got rid of 150... ?????

And Steve, I'd be actually quite happy with only 500 nukes, because it wouldn't take that many to destroy the world, but that would be good padding for just in case. But that wasn't the point I was making, Obama has stated desire for us, Russia, and everyone else involved with the START-style negotiations going on over the last 3 years to have 0. What happens when we all disarm down to none, then Iran, NK, or anyone else gets one- they have it, we don't, we're fuk't. We can't just dis-invent nuclear weapons, so now that it's here to stay, best to keep a somewhat healthy stockpile... but, do massive numbers really deter anyone? I'm more worried about the guy who has nothing to lose with one nuke, than the guy with everything to lose but has 1,000 nukes.

http://www.denverpost.com/recommended/ci_21553838

Evidently the path the do away involves upgrades and fixes.

Looks like we have done away with quite a bit of our arsenal: 40% in the 88-920 timeframe and another 50% or so or the remainder from 2000-2008. But how many do we really need? I'm not too worried about how many we have left.
