I keep forgetting to get my Hunter's Ed done. Finally scheduled a class, but not till January :(
Gonna tag this thread so I can find out some good places to go when the time comes.

Its illegal to use dogs to hunt cottontail rabbits, snowshoe hare and tree squirrels during any big game season (big game season ends Feb 1st)

we hunted in area 29 and as far as how we prepared it. we had no real spices so we put mustard on it and threw it on a cooking grate over a campfire

So did you dress them right away? if you do not dress it will turn the meat.
Did you get them up high on the hill or down in the valleys. been out hunting for them this year and because the lack of water the ones up on the hill are not looking so good and are easy to find, the ones down in the valley nice and fat and are playing hard to get.

we shot it up on the hill and as far as dressing it, we didnt manage to dress it right away it took us a while to find a grate on a fire pit . we guessed that that was probably the main problem

So far this season, I've got 14 rabbits, all on private land down near Franktown. If you go on a really cold and nasty day, right after a snow the bunnies are stupid easy to find, flush, and shoot. So far I've just used a 22wmr, doing head shots at around 10 - 50 yds. After I get done or need to get going somewhere, I just dress all of 'em before i leave the area. Give the coyotes and other preds something to eat. I've been going down there in the mornings, around 7:30 or so, and hunting till about 10:30. After that, they seen to hunker down, like they know I'll shoot them if they're in the open. I have to admit, this is the first season I've had any success with cotton tails. Also, I heard from an older buddy of mine who's hunted his whole life that jack rabbits are way more gamey, and tough, same goes for pine squirrels.

Okay, hunter's ed has been done. Ready to go on my first hunt before season's over. Anyone have any recommended spots near Denver?
Plenty of rabbits around my office building that I've offered to do something about but got told no.
There are a bunch in and around my neighborhood. I'll catch a couple one of these days.

Emeril Lagasse has a bada** rabbit stew recipe I've made a few times. Great with some stout or porter.
EDIT: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/emeril-lagasse/stewed-rabbit-recipe/index.html
DO NOT LET RABBIT GO TO WASTE!
I hear baby rabbit is tender and juicy. Baby everything, actually ;)
Went on Sunday. We got 3, all had liver spots. I think I'm done hunting rabbit down here. Gonna stick to the hills
Wtf are liver spots?
X2? I have heard to only hunt them in the cold winter for sake of lice but haven't heard about liver spots.

I believe it's called tularemia.
Been eating bunnies my whole life and never heard of it. What is it?
From http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001859/
Tularemia
Deerfly fever; Rabbit fever; Pahvant Valley plague; Ohara disease; Yato-byo (Japan); Lemming fever
Last reviewed: March 11, 2011.
Tularemia is an infection common in wild rodents that is passed to humans through contact with infected animal tissues or by ticks, biting flies, and mosquitoes.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors
Tularemia is caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis.
Humans can get the disease through:
• A bite from an infected tick, horsefly, or mosquito
• Breathing in infected dirt or plant material
• Direct contact, through a break in the skin, with an infected animal or its dead body (most often a rabbit, muskrat, beaver, or squirrel)
• Eating infected meat (rare)
The disorder most commonly occurs in North America and parts of Europe and Asia. Although outbreaks can occur in the United States, they are rare.
Some people may develop pneumonia after breathing in infected dirt or plant material. This is known to occur on Martha's Vineyard, where bacteria are present in rabbits, raccoons, and skunks.

I believe the safest way to hunt/eat rabbit is after the first frosts, snows whatever of the year. I think the infected ones tend to die when the weather turns.
