View Full Version : Gotta love Armslist (sarcasm fully intended)
So I did a sale/trade today, picked up a Smith and Wesson 36-6 .38 today in the trade. Turned around and sold it to a "collector" on Armslist buying Smith revolvers.
Not long after the sale, I get an email from Armslist stating that I had responded to a listing flagged as a scam.
Yup, you guessed it. Was to the a-hole that bought the revolver....for less than half the price. He knew exactly what I had and offered me crap for it. Is it my fault? Absolutely as I should have done more research then I had. Lesson learned.... yeah, don't trust shitheads on Armslist. First time I got burned in many trades/sales. Also will be the last time.
Just came here to vent my frustration. LOL [Bang]

Yeah, but that's where they go when they want a "Deal".LOL
I am a little confused about what happened. But there is no need to explain, I purposefully avoid even looking on Armslist. It is a waste of time and there are so many other places to get what you want or sell what you want. Like here for instance. You will get about the same price here as anywhere else and it is generally a good group of guys. Lesson learned.

Oh I fully intend to do any future trading/selling on here. But I currently can't as a probationary member. Like I said, lesson learned to do more research ahead of time.

Just so you know... You didn't get scammed... You fucked yourself. It's different. A scam would be if he cheated you out of it or took it from you unwillingly. You willingly sold your gun for less than it was worth. That's your fault. Not his.

Why don't you push him down and call him "fat" while you're at it JM? Way to kick a guy while he's down eh?
I guess I am a scammer too. I bought a $1200 race tranny off of craigslist for $100. I gave the guy every penny he was asking for his "C4 ford trans with deep aluminum pan." he said he was selling it as a builder core because he didn't know if it was any good. I got it home and took it apart. It had a billet tranbraked valve body, hardened input shaft, Kevlar band and alto red clutches..... The guy offered you a price and you accepted, he is not a scammers at all.

Huh?!?
JM is exactly right. Seems to me a bit of direct and unvarnished truth is a whole lot better than coddling a victim mentality. JM was not insulting IMO - just direct. OP needs to take it onboard and look at his role in it - not label others as scammers for his own choices.

He never said he got scammed, Armslist said he got scammed. Probably because someone else allowed themselves to fall for the same thing, and came back bitching. I think the OP was just more pissed at himself than anything else for allowing it to happen.

You must have missed his comment in Post # 7 above. Here, I'll make it easy for you to find - copied below:

Sure looks to me like he labeled others as "Scammers" for something that was entirely within his control.
As earlier - JMHO
And totally took the blame as my fault for not knowing. As I clearly said, several tikes. And yeah, I think he knew fully well the worth. Is it my fault. Yup.

We can always learn from a bad deal. I agree with most of you - it's a great deal for the buyer, unfortunately bad deal for Jake. I bet the lesson learnt from this worth so much more that that few hundred bucks though.

Or we can cuddle him and he wont learn from his mistakes.
I'm sory he fucked up, I really am. But it's no one's fault but his own. I'm glad he's manning up though.

He even copied/pasted part of your ad, it looks like. As soon as you posted the guy was a "collector" I knew who you were talking about.
I'm confused too. So if someone sells something at a deep discount and I know it's worth more but don't offer more than he's asking, then I'm doing something ethically wrong? Now if he gave you a line of bs that was untrue to get you to lower the price then I could see the problem. I've undervalued items that I've sold before and it stings but usually I was happy with the sale at the time so no scam.
You state you took it in trade. I have to assume you gave the other party credit for what you valued it at. I would also expect that you sold it for what you valued it at - maybe with a little profit. Sounds to me like you did fine, the collector is trying to make a nice profit and the original owner is the only person who lost out.

I'm sure it's the same guy I had an issue with on Armslist. I had a Model 60 3" listed. He asked me to call him and he haggled me down quite a bit on price. Before we concluded the deal he posted it for sale on another forum using my picture with a listed price significantly higher than my original asking price. I called him back and told him I would not do buisness with him.

I've gotta agree.
Not quite sure what the big deal is. You took something on trade, then sold it to someone else. Pretty sure all of us have done something similar at one point or another.

I dont see any issue here, he got the gun at a good price and is flipping it for a profit, so what?
We cruise the tanner for deals all the time, one of my buddies grabbed a preban that was priced too cheap and sold it for $2000 profit, i just drove to tuscon and grabbed a truck cause it was $4000 cheaper than i can buy a the same 4x4 here in colorado, what if i sold it at colorado prices now? That does not make me a scammer.
So just to be clear you are not allowed to make a profit in our capitalist country

So he is selling it for what you sold it for, $700? Must not be that big of a deal? I will give him $50 but not a penny more.
How about the prick that tried to haggle me down last week on armslist. Even lied about how how much they cost new. Then when we agreed on a price he tries to low ball me further with an excuse about the bank not being open. I know hes a member here.
Or the guys that dont try to negotiate during pm's, so expecting your asking price you drive over an hour each way wasting gas to meet them and as soon as they get there they start low balling you.

whats nice about this site is that you almost never experience any of that bs ive had nothing but positive experience here
Agreed, many years ago I picked up a NIB Browning Superposed Mallard for $1500, I flipped it the next week for $3K and I know he got at least $3K more for it a week later. I just didn't have the resources to find the right buyer.

I wouldn't sell a single bullet or brass to guy like that.
If buyer and seller agree that price is FIRM, and there are people who STILL haggle at a parking lot. I almost never have problem like that on this forum.
I will drive miles to purchase stuff , but I SELL stuff within 5mile radius of where I live.

So Seller A accepts the offer from Buyer B.
Buyer B flips it and pockets A PROFIT What's the Issue? Wait 1 minute I see A Profit was made and seller A didn't get the jackpot. So What? Doesn't mean they are a scammer, just smarter then the original seller.
One time or another we all sell something and later find the buyer flipped it for more, Oh Well...................
Regarding trying to haggle after a price was agreed upon. ONLY IF the item listed was upon inspection not what it looked like on line. I see it listed as "Minor rust spots" Then when actually handling the item I need a tetanus shot, sorry seller is getting a -1 minimum!
sounds like you just needed to do more research on value. I've been there before. Can't fault the guy for working a deal though. you are the one who took the cash and put it in your pocket and handed the man the gun.
Wait 1 minute I see A Profit was made and seller A didn't get the jackpot.
Sounds like you took that straight from an Obama speech.

Nope off the top of my head. More a bit of sarcasm than a sentence.

I knew what you meant, Jim. It just struck me funny. Kind of like it would lead into some sort of "redistribution of wealth" speech or something.
Kind of made me chuckle in an angry sort of way when I imagined it.
the other thing I will add will be that just because armslist sends you an email saying an ad your responded to was spam, does not mean it was a SCAM. SPAM is too much posting, people tired of reading the same ads over and over, SCAM is where someone takes advantage of you. the ad may have been spam, but you were in no way shape or form scammed.
