View Full Version : Ice Fishing
Its almost that time of year. Tarryall had almost 4" on some spots but still lots of open water. I picked up a gas powered auger with 2 sets of augers today for $140 at the fleamarket.
im ready to get out. Who else ice fishes?

I do and a buddy and I have been wanting to go up to tarryall. He has never ice fished before so I'm trying to get him in to it so I have someone to go with! I have been talking about going now for 3 years.. Haven't ice fished myself since 08 but have everything besides the gas auger. Congrats on that!
Yea its a blast. The guy thought it was a auger for fence post lol. I couldnt pass it up for that price.
We started with some friends 15 years ago. We used to drag all our shit out on the ice with sleds. Barbecue steak and have a great time.
Year 1 - 2.5 days fishing, moderate drinking and carousing
Year 2 - 2 days fishing, slightly more than moderate drinking and carousing
Year 3 - 1.5 days fishing, still slightly more than moderate drinking and carousing
Year 4 - 1.5 days moderate drinking and carousing, moderate fishing
Year 5 - 2 days heaving drinking and carousing, very little fishing
Year 6 - 2 days heaving drinking and carousing, 2 hours fishing
Year 7 - 2.5 days drinking and carousing, fish only on the restaurant dinner menu
Year 8 - 2 days drinking and carousing, rent snowmobiles while entirely too hungover
Year 9 - 1.5 days drinking and carousing, rent snowmobiles
Year 10 - 3 days drinking and carousing and titties in Vegas for our 10 year anniversary
Year 11, yea, Vegas is better than ice fishing. However, they really get pissed when you fire up the auger on the Casino floor.
Year 12, etc.
Tried to get them all to go ocean fishing in Mexico or somewhere warm in the winter but it never happened. Some have kids that got way into all the sports and could never make it work, some have been hit hard by the economy and can't afford to do anything, all the best excuses in the world not to go.
Fired up the auger the other day and charged the vex. Planning on hitting some ice next weekend.

Where do you fish?
Mainly the standard spots for ice. 11mile, Antero, Granby, Twin, Tarryall.

Hell yes! I'll most likely be out on Taryall or Antero this friday.
Got all of my reels respooled. Carb kit ordered for the Strikemaster. Vexy on the charger. Working on redesigning my sled modifications....
Here's the wife out on Granby last year. Good times.

Looking at the weather forecast, I hope there is still some ice left for the weekend...Looks sketchy...Better bring the long poles and maybe the fairy wand just incase.

Killer deal!!!
Yea it was. Im excited to go
I hit up the NW corner of Taryall on Saturday. 60% of the lake was froze over. 5" of ice a few hundred yards out. Deepest I could find on the safe ice was 5 FOW. I only stayed for a few hours...forgot the wax worms and resorted to Gulp maggots, two bites and that was it. There were people catching them....
sounds like it is still too early. by the time it gets good the second split of ducks will be back in and I'll get in the blinds!
I might try it this weekend and have a back up plan to shoot some yotes.

I've been out to Taryall 4 times over the past month. Was there Wed & Thurs this week with a friend and his wife. We caught around 30 trout. 14 inches of ice with a very small open spot in the middle that iced over yesterday.
I also hit up Chatfield on Christmas day, near the marina, 80 yards out there was 3 inches of ice. I wanted to hunt for perch but I was by myself and didn't want to venture out any further. I know people have been fishing out there the last few days.
Drove by Bear Creek on Christmas day and some people had some tip ups set about 50 yards out. Drove by it again yesterday and seen some huts set up about 75-100 yards out.
I've got a 3 day Granby trip in two weeks. Can't wait!!
I re-modified my sled. Works great!

I have all the gear: sled, portable shelters, tackle, Vexilar, gas auger, etc... I find myself actually going out less and less each year. I think I went out ony 3x last season. I just don't have the time or interest anymore, I guess. PM if you are interested in picking it all up at a fair price. Guns and related considered in trade as well. Pm me for details.

Antero had a good 6 inches in most areas on Black Friday. Iced 13. Wasnt on fire by any means but was good to get on the hard deck. Talked with guys that said Tarryall had 8 inches on it last weekend. On the way home from Antero I drove past 11 mile and it looked capped but still a little thin for this guy. I don't like thin Ice but if this cold snap happens it won't be an issue.
Side not Mtn Man, I saw in another thread you weld, you're not involved with Mountain Man Welding that is doing work on SDS are you?

Had a good day at chat field for perch once. I have spent a few days chasing walleye there on the sand pits, but no luck.
I've done OK at Shatfield for perch once too. Caught a few nice slimmers and some smallish walleye. My goal this winter is learn that lake better. I'll be out there on Saturday if yesterdays wind didn't jack it up.

Auger it does sound like the same guys! Crazy I hope they caught fish but after falling through the ice and having to go 30 yards breaking ice every time I tried to pull myself up it is not worth it! I was hunting at the time and had my rifle with me and fell through a swamp that was covered in snow and I was not familiar with that place... Scary to say the least! 6 in is good ice but not with this warm up we are having and the thaw and re-freeze
good luck Dave update me with pics if you get into some!

I was at the north side. 1 hit in 2 1/2 hours. Everyone else, nada. Slowwwww today. But it was Damn nice until noon when the damn wi*d started blowing.
I hit up 11 Mile on Monday. Pretty slow, marked a few fish…My friend walked away from his hole twice and both times he came back his bobber was gone, no fish on the end. We left around noon and headed to Antero to beat the skunk. Went out from the north boat ramp, had to go out pretty far to get away from the weeds. Caught 5 fish in two hours, 4 small stockers and one OK fish.
I picked up a couple of these in the small weights. They seems to be working pretty well. I like the fact they sit horizontal and when lightly bounced off bottom they resemble a feeding minnow. http://www.fishusa.com/Product/VMC-Minnow-Jig
I went to evergreen yesterday. Caught a 4 little rainbows and 2 decent size rainbows. Ice was 13" thick.
I hit up Evergreen a week or so ago. Caught lots of small stockers, my buddy caught the biggest at a whopping 12". Fun place to go though to shake a skunk

Myself and 11 other guys took our annual 3 day trip to Granby last weekend. We've been doing this trip for about 7 years, in all that time we have never caught a big Granby laker until this year. We hit our usually spots then added a half dozen new spots to the roster, used new techniques, new baits and constantly moved. We caught around 25 fish a day so the fishing over all was fairly slow but I think that's the way it goes if you're targeting big fish. I think we've finally got this lake nailed down.
We used your typical tube jigs, twister tails and sluggos. Fish were caught in 55-70 FOW.

Beautiful lakers Auger. I ice fish a lot down here (11 Mile mostly) but have hit Granby in the past. I will NEVER go there again without either a snow machine or 4 wheeler. Most of the time, that lake is horrible to ice fish on foot.
I have eaten a lot of smaller lakers (25 inches and smaller) and just fillet them, bread and fry them.
Yeah being mobile is key.
I fished 11 mile for the first time this year, that's big lake too! I almost wished they allowed machines out there.
I have only tried lakers baked and boiled and didn't care for either. Could be my spoiled ass is from MN, too much walleye. I'll try and fry them up next time.

I hear you Auger, I grew up on Big Mac in Huskerland and had a steady diet of walleye and white bass growing up. People go crazy over catfish - my dad wouldn't eat one with a gun to his head. I have only fried up the little lakers - big ones might be a little oily
I have been getting my ass kicked at 11 Mile this year but will hit it again soon. Here is a vid from last year, early ice at the mile - a little over 24 inches. Makes me feel better posting it as this year has been so rough. But that's fishing.

I hit up the "tourney" with my wife and some friends. Fishing was slow but I think that's what you get with 410 fisherman in a small area, who knows. Auger, do you mean carp or suckers? There are HUGE carp in 11 Mile. I caught one out of the boat a few years ago that easily went 12 pounds. After ice out you can see the winter killed ones down in Cross Creek and i know some go over 20 lbs.
I hear you on the tourney. I fished it last year and its a circus - I didnt enjoy it. Some guys got busted using live minnows last year.

No, I was talking about the Chatfield tournament, guess I should have clarified that...
1st place was a sucker that weighed something like 2.7 pounds. 2nd was a sucker that weighed around 2.3 pounds I think. $2500 for a sucker! :)
I heard about those people using live bait at 11 Mile. Punks!
I hit up Aurora res today for the first time. The focus was perch, which proved difficult. The 80+ holes I drilled produced 7 trout and 2 small (maybe 16") walleyes. Felt good to catch some eyes!

Went to 11 mile yesterday.
There was NO ONE on the lake at all all day. Freaky!
we set up in our cove, nonstop action all day, I caught about 20 to 25 stockers and a few just abit larger. Buddy did about the same.
Hooked into a monster fish on a dead stick powerball fake minnow. Fought it for 20 minutes then line gave out on ice which was 2' thick.
Wind got the best of us at about 1:30 so away we went.
Gonna head to evergreen tomorrow if anybody wants to go. Not super early.

Was finally able to scratch out a day to take my son and one of his friends fishing at 11 Mile. Was a good bite - we actually wound up with 5 fish, all of them 17'' in and my son got one that was almost 20". I got nothing - but that's OK. Found one strange thing - one of the bows had a whole cocktail shrimp in its stomach. Guess someone must have pitched it in the hole at the end of the day.
Went to Dillon yesterday and caught 2 Lakers and 1 rainbow... We were on the west side of the lake near the middle school. Caught the lakers on worms and meal worms. The rainbow on rainbow powerbait. All were in 15 - 18 FOW. Overall fishing was slow but my boy (5 years old) had the time of his life reeling in the fish!!!
BIG PLUS- we didn't lose anything down the holes either!
Anyone head out yet this year?

Two of my buddies have hit 11 Mile the last 2 Saturdays. The 19th they did pretty good with 5 nice bows and a pike. Last Saturday was bad with only 2 bows. They were using pink and white 1/32 oz. jigs dead sticked. Got to get set up and fishing before daylight seems to be the ticket the last few years. All the action is before 9 AM.
My neighbor gave us permission to fish his pond yesterday.
My daughter and I caught 14 wild brook trout in three hours - three were over 13 inches.
We had a blast.

I've tried 11 mile 4 times over the past 2 years and have never seen a fish.
I never got there before 9:00 however - maybe that's the problem.
Any chance someone could send me some GPS coordinates of where the fish are?
Looks like a pretty good time!
