My computer is about to crap out.

For the past several days I have been having trouble getting it to turn on. I push the power button but nothing happens. Sometime I can push it five or six times and it will finally power on. Sometimes I have to push it thirty or forty times.

I don't think she's going to last much longer.

Fortunately, when I finally got it fired up this morning the first thing I did was get all of my important files transferred onto my portable hard drive.

Anyone know where I can get a smoking deal on a new laptop without playing in the crowds on Friday?

Actually, that's a little different. I push the button and nothing happens. You just aren't pushing her buttons the right way. [ROFL1]

Micro Center usually has some pretty good deals. Especially if you aren't looking for the latest and greatest but are happy with the will do what I need it to do for another 3+ years. Upshot, most of their staff has a clue, not all but more than most the box stores.

Micro Center is where I normally start when I don't want to wait.

Another place to look is Action - http://actionpc.com/loc.html I seem to remember one of the owners was/is a member on this board. You won't find state of the art, latest gamer fanboy computers, but for what most of us do with computers, anything with a couple GB of RAM will do just fine.

If you are looking for a laptop, Dell and Gateway sometimes have deal through their website. Costco also has decent prices on laptops. I just can't stand all of the junk that comes pre-installed on new computers.

I will probably be tossing a desktop in the very near future. I normally wipe the drives and donate them, but if you are interested, it is nothing to write home about. I'm currently using it to serve netflix to a TV upstairs, so it doesn't get a lot of use anyway.

Thanks, Chuck. I appreciate the offer. I actually have two other laptops that still work. One of them the screen flops around and the other one gets too hot to sit it on my fat belly while I lay in bed and watch TV.

Downshot, the staff that does have a clue may be a stanky BO ridden console jockey working off his game fix.

There are some FUNKY dudes there at times. [Faint]

Ok, I have 2 laptops here that you or anyone else are welcome to (you get first dibs if you want one).

First is a Toshiba A205-S5804 model PSAF3U-0NR00V - I think we upgraded the RAM but I can't be sure.

Second is a HP G60-549DX - May also have upgraded RAM

Theses are both in perfect condition and little used. Both are officially licensed MS sticker worn on the HP. There should be a recover procedure to bring them back to default.

The only problem is I can't find the power supplies to either so if someone on here has some supplies you can test them both out.

All I ask is that the be restored to factory default in my presence, i know you could always recover something but I doubt there is much important info on either and I trust you.

If Ray isn't interested these are both free to anyone, I'm sure someone here has a computer parts company. Either reformat the HD in my presence or leave it with me... or shoot it... I'm not all that paranoid.

On a side note, anyone interested in some 2500 series Cisco routers?

I appreciate the offer. That's pretty awesome of you. [Awesom]

I'll pass on them at this time. Like I posted earlier in this thread, I actually have two laptops that are still functional should this one crap out on me.

Thanks. [Beer]

I second microcenter. I hate to talk money. But when you are shopping for such stuff, it helps to know what your max that you can afford is. I say max because for me I usually buy the absolute best that I can and then use it for a few years. I find that if you buy the cheapest thing at the time, you replace it faster and the long term cost is just as much as buying a good one.

I would also suggest you buy a laptop with a MSATA port. Perhaps one of the guys at microcenter will know what that is. But most of the time I know more than they do. I think they play dumb for liability reasons. But an MSATA port is a internal port for a small solid state drive. Your hard drive is usually the bottle neck for most day to day things. Having a solid state drive is night and day better. The reason I purchased my Lenovo Y470 was because all of them have an MSATA port. Pretty much almost all the Lenovos do. The other name for an MSATA drive is a "jump drive or cache drive". They can be used as either a monster cache drive for your regular hard drive (cheaper 32gig MSATA will work) or you can pony up for a 256GB and run the whole operating system on that and then have your regular hard drive for PORN...er... anyways.

Second word of advice, all the computers on GREAT INSANE BLACK FRIDAY DEALS.... usually SUCK. They are crappy computers for people that don't know a hard drive from a hole in their head. Don't buy the 200 door buster ever.

Also if you can wait, I would always suggest you just buy it direct from the manufacturer. WAY better specs and cheaper than the store. I am drooling over getting the new y400 from Lenovo.

No problem, I hope someone has a business that can use these. I'd hate to just smash them and throw them away.

No they are a waste of money most of the time.

Also determine if you want decent performance or mega battery life. The two rarely meetup.

Lenovo Tseries are usually great computers. Business people including police depts use them because they are rugged.
http://shop.beta.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/betaweb/BetaPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087&current-category-id=19C791A03AF24034A0011B825513BCED#.UKmaCIfZboI

Lenovo Y series... best bang for the buck for a gaming entertainment laptop. I have a Y470 and want the new Y400. Only gripe is that the body case is weak. But I travel with it almost everyday so I abuse it.
http://shop.beta.lenovo.com/betaweb/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/#.UKmZn4fZboI

Also make sure you get the in house waranty stuff. Well worth it. They send a tech to you and he fixes it should it need it.

And on the networking front, if someone has a business I have a lot of Cisco 2500's as well as cables and everything else. I paid over $20K about 10 years ago (yes I understand they're not worth that much now). If someone can benefit it's all free.

Nynco, I seriously appreciate all of the helpful advice but it appears you and I approach things from a different angle. [Beer]

I'm more of a "buy cheap and when it craps out in a year or two buy another one" type of a guy.

My computer isn't used for work and I rarely travel with it. It's main function is internet browsing and email. I don't do any gaming and don't run any fancy photo or video editing software. I know just enough about them that I can probably name a few of the internal components and maybe explain their basic function.

Heck, I could probably get by with some sort of tablet computer for my needs.

Thanks. [Awesom]

I did not see this anywhere, but I have had good luck with Tigerdirect. They are refurbished computers, but they offer a warranty with them that is as good as the factory warranty if I remember correctly.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/indexus.asp?SRCCODE=WEBGOOTD&cm_mmc_o=mH4CjC7BBTkwCjCECjCE&gclid=CPXox8f_2bMCFSPhQgod_BQAvQ

Other than that I would not buy anything from a box store. I would wait until cyber Monday and buy it online if you know what you want. I would go look around at a few machines and find what you want then look for an online sale from a reputable business. That is if you are not in too much of a hurry.

Perhaps you should find out what's actually wrong with your computer first? It could be something as simple as a fan that's caked up with dust that isn't cooling the processor anymore. I do side work like this all the time. Find out what's really wrong and then replace it.

This thing is probably three or four years old now. Pretty sure I got it around the holidays and payed less than $300 for it. I feel I have got my money's worth out of it. Time to let it go.
