View Full Version : Ear Gauging Rant
Saw some fool on the trail.
Are you a fuckin' retard? What are you going to do when you're 40? That is all.
So what are you saying? We should all specialize in cosmetic earlobe surgery so we can make millions in about 15 years? [Coffee]

Hey, that is a damn good idea...and while they're under we can tattoo I D 10 T across their forehead.
Hey man. You never know...he's probably a really nice guy!
Had a buddy who was always a little off He got the holes in his ears up to 2 inches. He took out the hoops and didn't like his hanging flapping ear lobes so he took a pair of scissors and cut off the bottom of his ears. Clipped something major in one of his ears and had to go to the VA to get it stitched up.

You bet you did. My wifes grandma was a care taker for 40+ years for mentally handicapped adults. Never once saw them with an ear gauge. Show some fucking class, dip shit.

Really, 15 years, so the ear lobe eventually closes. The guy I saw must have had an inch or bigger, and I've seen even bigger on other people.

I had mine at 1/2", you can barely tell. Mine did not take 15 years though, prob 1-2 months.

I am only replying to this thread because of my respect for both of you.
I have worked in the human services field for the last 10 years, working primarily with people who are diagnosed with developmental and intellectual disabilities. I see this everyday. "Retard" is in the dictionary with many definitions. Doctors still to this day use the word in identifying a diagnosis. MR stands for mental retardation; however, over the last 50 years people have used it so much in a negative context that is insulting to those who are diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability.
It has become a part of our language to call someone "retard" to describe their stupidity even if not directed to someone that is diagnosed as such. Many people do not realize how negative it is to use the word and those that work with or close to someone that is developmentally or intellectually disabled often time finds that it is so offensive they just become angered and do not make a "healthy" redirection or explain to the person using it as they might not understand how negative it is.
I believe using the word "retardation" such as "I had to retard my timing on my truck." is still okay.
There are also many people who are not diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability that are stupid, just called them dumb ass.
[Coffee]
And what if you're tied up and forced to let someone have sex with you ear.... you're going to regret that you never did it.

I'd suggest being more specific. I'm not quite sure who in this thread should grow up and if it's me I'd like to get started ASAP.

Dammit, there goes my new year's resolution of trying to look like the people at Tokyo Joe's. :)
I have my ears gauged, im a nice guy, great job, best father i can be. I dont think it makes me any less of a man than you right? I dont think my I.Q. Has dropped but then again i own guns so some might think im crazy lol.
The number of words that have become prohibited by the political-correct police since I was a child leads me to believe that within another hundred years, there will be precious few words that English speaking humans can use without offending someone.

Well my thread has certainly taken a few turns. I should have put a smiley or something to convey my mixed emotion in my original thread, too late now.
My comment was mostly in jest but also in wonderment at why any American would do that. To the best of my knowledge it isn't part of our history and there isn't any rite of passage or ritual associated with it or maybe I'm just that out of touch.
I've seen on TV and in magazines African tribes and their body modifications and my understanding is that it is their symbolism, their rite of passage, their ritual or something else. If I was in Africa I wouldn't care one bit what they did nor would I comment on it the manner I used here because it is natural to their particular culture and history.
I've have dealt with people who have these mods and I bear no animosity towards them, for the most part they're just like me, a learning human. Anyway, on with the show.
I think it's because tattoos were made so mainstream by their parents. I mean it used to be if you wanted to freak your parents out you would go get a tattoo. Now, since most of these kids have parents with tattos, they are reaching out in different ways to piss their parents off.
[Coffee]
I think tats are more symbolic or a remembrance, like the guys I see with military service tats, especially the ones where there is a cool story behind it.

It really depends on the person I suppose. Mine aren't in remembrance of anything and don't symbolize anything either. They are just pretty to look at and I like them.

See, I didn't think of that reason, dammit I just can't win. Pretty is good though and you like them and that is what counts in the end. [Beer] Perhaps it is the same with the gentleman i saw this afternoon, except I don't know anyone who can see their ear lobes.[Muaha] Outside of a mirror anyway, maybe he's really vain. [Swim]
Anytime someone talks about gauging, I bring up my 73 year old dad. Hey you want to be cool like him, do it. I would love to invest in a tattoo removal and earlobe shrinking business. If you got in early you could have franchises all over. Like tanning salons.

It appears to me that some people are oversensitive to once-common terminology. I find the over-sensitivity to be a form of political correctness (speechwise). I personally despise political correctness in any form.

You mean like screening every man, woman and child at airport security so that nobody gets their feelings hurt by being singled out for screening?

They can do that with the absolute grossest body modification of tongue splitting.

Wonderful example of course. At the airport- we need to PROFILE. I don't like it when someone implies that I can't use a term or a certain word because it -might- offend someone. The n-word is a perfectly understandable example of an offensive term.
Retard? Come-on, I think we've all said it. We all know what we mean by it and it has nothing to do with the "mentally challenged".

Right or wrong, I often find myself using the word "'tard" in close company and I had a Mentally Retarded uncle when I was growing up. Cool dude unless he was drunk, then that fucker got mean. :D

In all fairness for those that have not seen it or been around it very much, the word "retard" or "retarded" is in the same category as any other racist word. Not being "Politically Correct" either. Same context to those that are developmentally or intellectually disabled. Now me being white and you call me the "N" word I would just laugh, calling someone that you feel has done something stupid a "retard" is the same thing.
It is ingrained in our culture as prime example the picture Ray posted, I am just advising that if you choose to use that word be warned that if in the company of those that are intellectually or developmental disable this very offensive.
Now on to the subject at hand. Tats cool, too much though, not very attractive. weird other alterations to ones body, well it is their body, they have to deal with it. Anyone ever met a "triple Xer"? Worked with a guy that was, he told me once he had 48 pearcings, I could only count 15 on his face, didn't want to go there trying to think of the other 38 pearcings.[Coffee]
I doubt there are many of use here who would call someone with a real mental handicap a "retard". (Well, maybe Jim would. [Coffee])
But there are probably many people here who would call you or me a "retard", Skully.

Not calling anyone anything. Just pointing out that the context in which a word is used is what makes it wrong or right. Not the word itself.

I think the birthday cake tattoo should be somewhere else[Tooth]
I understand the sensitivity a lot of people have regarding the "R" word, and I personally try to not use it anymore. Not always successfully, but I would never use it in reference to someone who actually WAS mentally handicapped. That's just crude, and I really don't want to intentionally offend ANYONE. Just ain't my style and I like to think I was raised with a little class anyway. I tend to be a smartass sometimes in search of a laugh, but knowingly hurting peoples' feelings ain't my thing. But I admit that sometimes, someone is just acting so stupid that I'll slip.
But the ear gauging - that, I just dont get! I mean, I have some tattoos, but t-shirt sleeves will cover them. People who get tattoos on their hands, and especially their faces....man, that just looks like a horrible mistake to me. And the big holes in the ears, tongue splitting, branding, having shit implanted under your skin, that kind of stuff just strikes me as plain nuts. I went to a big tattoo convention once probably 25 years ago, and the films I saw about things people were doing to their genitals blew my mind! And that was 25 years ago!
Guess I'm just an old fuddy-duddy, but I just don't get it. My first thought is always about how hard it is to get and keep a job to begin with, and "you can only make one first impression", or however that saying goes. And bizarre, highly visible tattoos, piercings, and mutilations just doesn't seem like the brightest idea to me. Former Nugget player Chris Anderson is a good example, all that ink on his neck and face will ALWAYS be there, and someday it's gonna look like hell, and he'll probably wonder "WTF was I thinking???".
If a person wants any chance of having any kind of decent career and income, making yourself look like someone that potential employers are gonna look at and think "whoa!", just doesn't seem like a good move to me. Not to mention the whole thing about "what's that gonna look like when you're 60?" concept. I certainly understand the desire to be cool and accepted by your peers, but deliberately sabotaging your future.....I just don't get it.
But anyway, it's a free country, and there's certainly been plenty of men and women sacrifice everything so our citizens can do what they want. I just don't think that if someone makes themselves so freaky looking that they can't support themselves, that it should be up to the rest of society to support them, and people should think about that first.
And that's all I have to say about that! But I am glad to hear that the ear lobe holes can close back up, that makes me feel better!
"Are there any ******s here tonight? Could you turn on the house lights, please, and could the waiters and waitresses just stop serving, just for a second? And turn off this spot. Now what did he say? "Are there any ******s here tonight?" I know there's one ******, because I see him back there working. Let's see, there's two ******s. And between those two ******s sits a kyke. And there's another kyke— that's two kykes and three ******s. And there's a spic. Right? Hmm? There's another spic. Ooh, there's a wop; there's a polack; and, oh, a couple of greaseballs. And there's three lace-curtain Irish micks. And there's one, hip, thick, hunky, funky, boogie. Boogie boogie. Mm-hmm...I got three kykes here, do I hear five kykes? I got five kykes, do I hear six spics, I got six spics, do I hear seven ******s? I got seven ******s. Sold American. I pass with seven ******s, six spics, five micks, four kykes, three guineas, and one wop. Well, I was just trying to make a point, and that is that it's the suppression of the word that gives it the power, the violence, the viciousness. Dig: if president kennedy would just go on television, and say, "I would like to introduce you to all the ******s in my cabinet," and if he'd just say "****** ****** ****** ****** ******" to every ****** he saw, "boogie boogie boogie boogie boogie," "****** ****** ****** ****** ******" 'til ****** didn't mean anything anymore, then you could never make some six-year-old black kid cry because somebody called him a ****** at school."

I wouldn't hit it with a hammer.
and as far as her tongue, I am far less interested in what she can do with it as what she has done with it.
Please do not misunderstand.
I do not care what you do with your person. That is not what makes her undesirable. I actually find the tattoos attractive.
However, she, like many others derive their fame from being abnormal and disregarding rules of normal behavior, personal responsibility and sometimes general hygiene. I do not find any of these behaviors attractive
as an example, Lohan... I wouldn't hit that with a car.
it has less to do with the tats and more to do with the behavior.

I've worked with a lot of models over the years and invariably, one of them will refer to someone within their own ethnic/racial group by a word that some would find offensive. They typically look at me, smile, and say "I can say that, but you can't". Yes, I know the history of why some groups seem to be able to call themselves a certain thing but my saying the same thing, not being a part of that group, is deemed unacceptable. Well, newsflash y'all: if group X can call themselves a derogatory term, don't think I can't learn from their example and use the same term.
Oddly, honkey and cracker are not referred to as the H-word and the C-word, yet other groups get their descriptions abbreviated with just a single letter. Why can't I be special too?!

I am far more offended when people call those with mental disabilities "retards" than when I hear someone refer to a non-mentally challenged individual as a "retard" in place of "stupid" or "moron."
I was raised that the correct term is mentally disabled, or whatever they may have (down syndrome, autism, etc.)
I am finding it really interesting that the OP complains bout people gauging out their ears and eight pages later we are having conversations/discussions about the use of the word "retard".
