View Full Version : Hornady scales suck
Man taking bullets apart to get the right charge in them sucks. I took out some 185 grn XTP rounds today and they felt really light. I came home and pulled a couple apart and checked on a working scale, 7.0-7.5 grains of 4756. So I have started pulling them apart to charge to the 9.1 that I wanted. I figure it is between 9.1-9.5 on the rounds I redid with 9.1 being the Max. As far as the scale goes it passed the calibration with no problem, what through me off was a it said a 230 grain 45 weighed 282 grains. I purchased a Lyman and am still trying to figure out if I like that one.

No fan or close to a heater that will fluctuate your readings. As mentioned LEVEL surface, i also suggest loading to middle of specs until ALL issues are resolved. Running to max knowing there may be issues with the scale could cost you a gun, fingers, hand, eye .

Scale issues are more often a technique problem than a bad scale. Look at the stability of the base its resting on, make sure that the balance bearing is clean and free, make sure the arm is not dragging on the pointer scale, etc.

This.
If 9.1 is listed as max, don't load to 9.5. You may get away with it but your rolling the dice every time you pull the trigger.
And, as Jim mentioned the stakes are high.
