I just bought a SKS for fun and SHTF. What would be a good overall round for plinking and SHTF. I was thinking about some of that Bear Ammo. It was $119 bucks for 500 rounds at cheaper than dirt. And what's the deal with lacquer covered. Is that better? Any input on SKS ammo will be very much appreciated.

Thanks!!

Golden tiger is real good. Supposedly they have a boat tail bullet. Tula is pretty good also. Pretty much all the cheap combloc ammo is good for SHTF and plinking. Maybe get a few hundred soft points for hunting but other than that I would stick with FMJ. Personally I prefer the NON LACQUERED ammo. (Golden tiger ammo is lacquered.) I've seen some of the lacquer get pretty thick around the case and cause chambering issues. This was one case that I have found. This only happened while trying to slip in a round for headspacing purposes. It probably would have chambered if a bolt carrier was slamming into it but if I had my choice I would stick with either yugo brass cased(corrosive) or the non lacquered combloc stuff. Most people have no problems with lacquered cases though and shoot the shit out of it with no problems.

I've also heard theories of if you leave a lacquered case chambered after getting the barrel real hot that it could melt the lacquer then harden and glue itself into the chamber. Again this is only internet rumor. I haven't seen any actual reports of this.

The real expensive winchester stuff I stay away from. No reason to buy it unless you like wasting money or your real anal about your ammo.

Golden Tiger is supposed to very pretty nice stuff, and about the same price: http://www.sgammo.com/product/golden-tiger/500-round-half-case-762x39-fmj-bt-golden-tiger-124-grain-ammo (the thousand round box is a little cheaper per round).

If you can find the yugo stuff and you have no problems with "mildly" corrosive ammo then get it. Brass cased, boat tail bullet, about the most accurate ammo out there.

I would say mildly corrosive cause I shot some about 2 weeks ago and haven't cleaned my gun yet and there is not one spec of rust.... Yet. However their surplus AK parts were pretty chewed up due to the corrosive ammo and not cleaning it. So beware.

Golden Tiger for practice, Yugo M67 for "for real" stuff. It's all in the bullet design.
