View Full Version : Rant - South Site Range Report 11/25/12
Arrived today at 8:30 with 2 adults and 2 12 yo’s. We had set our targets and were unpacking gear at the 100yd lane (second lane as you drive in) when rounds started impacting 50 yards south of us.
These rounds were impacting in the area just south of the parking for our lane, maybe 50 yards away. Kids are taking cover, adults moving them behind the cars as we detiermine who is firing.
I see someone playing run’n’gun games up the hill. They are in clear view and usinging pistols downhill toward us and 67. Seem to be aiming at trees but missing, unclear what their goal was. I am yelling but they keep shooting, then a break only to find a second is doing the same.
I continued to yell (not sure what to do short of return fire) and the second shooter stopped.
At this point I was at a loss, so pissed off but everyone was OK so what do you do?
I walked up to talk with them, my car and their car were under 200yds apart and in clear view, WTF are they thinking when they had a backstop but shot downhill instead!!! Lot’s of sorry’s, “we are ex mil and should have done better”…
Really unhappy about this shit, they should know better! What do I do, god help them if they hurt one of mine but up to that point…
My kids really prefer reactive targets but this is why I would rather be at a farmal range. I am sure there were nice guys who did not think but WTF, things could have gone bad very quick.
We had to tell the boys not to tell ‘Mom’ else this is the last trip.
I am just so angry, so pissed off but can’t go returning fire just cause they made a stupid mistake (assuming it causes no harm). Not returning covering fire but pissed. Would not be surprised to find these were member on this site.
At the end of the day we still took 2 bags of trash plus our brass with us and the boys had fun but I am very disappointed in those that were so thoughtless that now our boys have actual practice taking cover.

Wow man... I'm glad no one got hurt.
I like to take that extra step if anyone shoots near me or (in your case) parking next to another party of taking the next step in seeing who the shooters are and where are they shooting.
What's tickling me a little bit (beside them shooting at your general direction)... no one is suppose to be shooting at trees to begin with... I'm pretty lost for words right now...
.. again, I'm glad you guys came out of that unharmed...

You could have been like that member in GJ and laid down some suppressive fire as you made for cover.........
First, I am glad you and your loved ones are OK.
Second, once again, this is why I don't shoot places where the general population is allowed to shoot.

I'm glad everyone is OK, I would have made a phone call to the Sheriff Department and had them come out. But that's just me.
I was close to calling, probably should have...
This is why I'm a member of a private members only indoor range.

First of all, let me say that I'm glad that you and your loved ones are OK.
But they would have closed the place for good if you made that call. Libtards are just looking for excuses to shut us from enjoying our sport.

and idiots continue to provide excuses.

No excuse for this.
My question is: Would orange vests worn by all the shooters have helped them see you?
Scary! Glad everyone is ok, my experience down there has always been safe

^^^^^^ This, for the Win. Very different atmosphere and safety level at membership ranges.
i main area (near the front of the park ) is a dangerous place . i have even seen people practicing drive by's and all sort of unsafe tactical ideas . there is plenty of "run and gun " space in the back of the park where its safe to work on technical problems . i like to leave the front alone 1 for safety reasons and 2 because thats where families like to shoot . i love south site but i fear that the place has limited time when i here stories like this one . glad you and yours are safe and if you want the low down on a few "safe" places to shoot send me a pm .
oh and bob beat me to it , first thing i thought of was ketchup (or what ever his name is ) and his rpk shooting at imaginary threats .

This is another reason when I come into an area I usually get obnoxious with the car horn and then wave at people.
I don't know that it would always help, but if it keeps me from being shot, I guess its worth the looks I get sometimes.
not diverting blame, just sharing
All I can say is suppressive fire and run!!!

Glad you and your family are safe. Last time I was at Pawnee something somewhat similar happened to me and my group.

Fawk that I would have returned fire. Im glad Im a member of WHAC
JC! That's messed up but glad you and everyone else is ok. I would be so pissed and definately would want to call the Sheriff. People should know the rules when out shooting and not only that but common sense tells you you don't run around shooting downhill, at trees or whatever trying to play G.I. Joe. Crap, if they are ex mil they should definately know better!
I know it would be hard to think about this in the moment - but for anyone else reading this - if it happens in the future get pictures of the idiots. We could put up a wall of shame.
To answer a few questions...
Yes, I do belong to a private range but the kids like to shoot reactive targets and my range does not allow that.
Wearing Blaze Orange most likely would not have helped, if you can't see 2 SUV's parked directly off the edge of the road you aren't looking.
Maybe I should have called the police, yes they were stupid but I don't know that calling the pd would have helped anything. I spoke with them and they understood the gravity of the situation.
Returning fire would only have increased the chances of someone being hurt or killed. It would not have reduced the risk to mine but might have actually increased the danger to them and would certainly lead to my spending some time in the local jail.
I will be finding a new local for outdoor shooting with the kids.

It would have been difficult NOT to return fire in this situation if I had my kids with me.
This here is one main reason why I dislike the public free for all ranges and Id rather drive the 2 hours to my private property and
shoot in peace and safety. Not to mention wanna be DOW assholes who think they are gods gift to the world act as if
they can do as they want and be total douches without repercussions. My son thought I was gonna drop that asshole on Friday. [Bang][Bang][Bang]
